If you go by the same streets everyday you can set 2 fixed reference points(for instance the corners of a building) then you can check on your progress, knowing how far have you gone. It's a great exercice for those stinking streets. lol I sometimes go to public toilets on a single breath just for fun. ;) Cheers.

These guys were out in the Ocean all day to get this fish. This fish was speared on the last run of the day. They got two for the day. Obviously this was the biggest one. They were given to the Locals in NZ to eat. It was not sold for Profit or even to recoup costs. A whole village ate fish for a week. A true Legend. Thanks Butch for the Video. And thanks Gunther for a once in a lifetime shot. All caught on Vid.

You are confusing different types of tuna. Perhaps you are talking about canned tuna. Big eye, albacore, skip jack, etc. are not in the same price range as yellow fin and blue fin tuna. And Blue fin tuna is way more expensive than yellow fin. A large fatty Southern Blue Fin tuna is worth tens of thousands of dollars on the market, but please don't eat them, they are highly endangered.

@ Taylor Dawson: I've done both, trust me this is much harder than bagging a buck. Shooting a big fish like this requires expert level skills. You have to 1) be comfortable diving 10, 15, 20m+ and stay steady comfortably down there as you scope and zero in 2) unlike the buck you have to be able to get close to the fish, which is not easy for big open water fish like tuna, marlin and trevally 3) only a headshot will do, if you don't kill the fish i.e. headshot bye bye speargun. It'll drag you like a horse if you don't let the spear gun go.

That may be the case Mr TheHarloo, but not every one can afford to buy a lobster or a 1 carat diamond or even gold but people manage without them OK. did you know if all the world stopped fishing for 1 year the whole sea would replenish its self 10 times over then we can all have plenty of seafood for all.. but the way where going it's got to stop mate one day there will be no fish for anyone of us.

I am one of those " homo greenys save the world type" but I also practice spearfishing. Everything I catch I eat it, if i'm not gonna eat it, I don't shoot. We have to show to the people that we are the best fishers out there ( we select the biggest fish always and a legal species)... net fishing is the problem, not us. They take all species no matter the size.. the net doesn't distinguish : \ Sorry for my english. V_V A really good video!!

@fattommy16 I'm the idiot?! My point is that bluefin tuna are overfished and that people need to stop taking the larger predators in our ocean. Just like the buffalo and many species in Africa, the tuna, marlin and sharks are being hunted to endangerment. It is not unreasonable or idiotic at all to disapprove of videos showing people killing large red list animals. It's not that I don't like all spearfishing; I abhor spearfishing some of the largest, most amazing creatures in our ocean.
@TheConormac1
@TheConormac1 13 лет назад
@pmtad significant number of dead threatened fish per year. 90% of big fish have already been fished out of the ocean (natgeo). And yet marlin, grouper and tuna are all on the list of many spear fishermen, as proven by numerous youtube videos. One mature bluefin tuna can produce over 3 million eggs. Every big fish counts toward the recovery of the overfished stocks. If spear fishermen considered sustainable fishing, there would be more, larger fish and a healthier stock.
@TheConormac1
@TheConormac1 13 лет назад
@pmtad You are right, it is schools of fish. I am not necessarily against spearfishing; I hope to spearfish invasive lionfish sometime in the future. Spearfishing is sustainable in some cases because you can selectively catch fish. My problem with this video concerns the threatened bluefin tuna displayed in this video. Most people understand that the industrial methods of fishing are more destructive than spearfishing. However, spearfishing amounts for a significant..
@TheConormac1
@TheConormac1 13 лет назад
@scoliva I am actually a fisherman. A sustainable fisherman. The statistics of catch and release fishing could be argued all day; deep water fish have a 60% mortality rate while shallow water fish (such as rockfish) have less than a 10% mortality. Properly handling fish and using the proper equipment greatly increases their chances of survival. The fact that you are purposely avoiding is the status of the bluefin tuna...
@scoliva
@scoliva 13 лет назад
There's no point in lying. It's very obvious that you're not a fisherman. The majority of catch and release fisherman don't do it right, in which case 43% of released fish die within 6 days if not handled properly. This man should be an ambassador for sustainable fishing. If everyone fished like him, the issue of declining fish stocks wouldn't exist. Surely you agree with that, but then I'm thinking you won't.
@TheConormac1
@TheConormac1 13 лет назад
@scoliva I look this stuff up on youtube so I can make people aware that the actions these people took damaged the environment. I support catch and release fishermen who at least attempt to have fun and be environmentally conscious. Deny it or not what this person did was damaging to the environment. Killing that animal should not be considered an accomplishment, it should be seen as an ignorant activity that deprives future generations of these amazing fish...
@TheConormac1
@TheConormac1 13 лет назад
@scoliva I think the only rubbish on this webpage are the dumb comments and the video itself. Recreational fishing in New Zealand is sustainable for the most part. However, there is only one stock of bluefin tuna in the pacific, so it does not matter if New Zealand is sustainable, other countries overfish the one stock and the tuna suffers. There is nothing sustainable about the overfishing of the bluefin tuna.
@scoliva
@scoliva 13 лет назад
@TheConormac1 I don't know where you're from and what rubbish information they feed you over there. But here in New Zealand, we have a huge fishing culture -over 30% of the population take part in recreational fishing. The understanding and appreciation we have for our most precious resource gives us the right to catch a fish when we want to. New Zealand's West Coast has more bluefin tuna than it does people.So if you don't like killing fish, then don't look it up youtube sicko.
@TheConormac1
@TheConormac1 13 лет назад
@scoliva The practice of spearfishing, among other fishing methods, threatens the bluefin tuna. People should not be shooting an animal that has been overfished for 40 years and reduced to a third of its 1970 population. With 90% of big fish removed from the ocean, it is the responsibility of spearfishermen (among others) to stop the killing of top predators. This video is a testament to the lack of motivation among fishermen to change that behavior of killing.
@TheConormac1
@TheConormac1 13 лет назад
@Jake73B 90% of all big fishes have been removed from the ocean. The Atlantic Bluefin is critically endangered and the Pacific Bluefin is threatened. All over the Mediterranean, fishermen are losing jobs because of the declining market. The vast majority of scientists agree that a temporary ban on tuna is necessary for the stocks to recover, but Japan and small countries prevent essential legislation to be passed.
@Jake73B
@Jake73B 13 лет назад
Please explain to us how a bluefin is a "threatened animal"?? Sorry I do not understand as there is a ton of them here off our coast in the Fall/Winter? I wish they were threatened! They are nothing but swimming vacuum cleaners eating everything in sight. not a croaker left on the beach after they pass through. Sir that is an awesome video! @38 I hope to get into spearfishing this yr - though I do not expect to try anything such as this - maybe a mahi or something easy. Good Job J

I guess u guys used electricity. Wires on your guns were electrified. Otherwise, this tuna would drown you. Electrified gun, just a bit more powerful can kill great white in the same way. Tuna was paralyzed. But why did u make several more shots? 2 headshots would b enough to take it off. And body shots just spoil a few kg of meat. Still, very nice catch. What guns did u use? Was it RA Railgun?
@pwrplnt1975

@cjwuna I agree with you 100% There needs to be a season so they can't fish when the Tuna are breeding. And the Long Lining needs to be outlawed all together. They kill Seals,Turtles, and anything else on there lines. None of the big tuna species will be left to spear or catch on a rod. Hope something is done about both of these un-ethical practices!! Anyone that jumps overboard and snags a fish with a spear has my respect. I'm all for the havesting of fish, But there needs to be monitored.

@LiveLife2thefunnest I do not agree, in fact, it is the other way round.Current scientific insights show that the result of a strong focus on big sized fish, leads to genetic changes towards smaller individuals that mature earlier in order for the species to survive. The trend as visible from the last 4 decades is that fish remains smaller and the maximal catch (msy) without overfishing the population, is declining. So the trend is smaller and less fish, its a lose-lose situation unfortunately.
@ajwplanet
@ajwplanet 14 лет назад
@gnarcore88 responsibility starts with yourself, so your just as guilty as commercial fishers if you go fish for bluefin tuna this way because are you conserving the species by fishing on it? Weird reasoning. This spearfishing is very negative as there is a focus on blue fin tuna of bigger size. It is scientifically proven that fish of big size are vital for survival of species because they produce relatively more offspring ánd of higher quality.

"We're encouraging more and more people to eat fish. When in fact, the problem is that we're running out of fish and the oceans are dying. There's simply not enough fish in the oceans to continue to feed the ever expanding population of human beings. And what that means is that if the fish disappear the oceans die and when the oceans die civilization collapses and we all die. " - Paul Watson (Sea Shepherd)
@TheRealNoway
@TheRealNoway 14 лет назад
The Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is a large migratory fish found in the western and eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. Bluefin tuna is the source of highest grade sushi. Bluefin tuna fisheries are near collapse and the species at serious risk of extinction if unsustainable fishing practices in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean are not stopped. A temporary ban on the global trade of bluefin tuna would allow the overexploited species to recover.

totally depends on the quality of the meat. but i suspect with a instant kill like that, there is no stress to the fish (no burn to the meat) and since its speared in the head, none of the eatable parts are disturbed. Then it would depend on how they handled and stored it from that point on. Cut the gills to bleed it out and ice it as soon as possible. Even with proper handling, it depends on the fish itself, diet, fat content, water conditions, where its caught.

I always had problem explaining spearfishing to people who don't see the whole picture. Yes, it is obvious thing - we kill fish with spear. But how much fish can one man catch? Average few kilos or maybe one or two big ones. Now compare that to trawler ships and line fishing etc - it is a mere fraction. Those guys clean the ocean. Yes we are selective, and it is a tough thing to do. One risk his life and is in water - there fish is at home.

WoW, now that is a nice Blue Fin Tuna.... I would love to try that someday but I would be afraid that a big fish like that would take me for a deep swim. I wonder how many spear fisherman have died doing that and had a big fish pull them down and drown them? That had to make for some great fresh tuna steaks...

@Zammis007 "the bigger the fish the easy the target" without thinking of catching.. I been spearfishing for 7yrs. and I use spear with plain tips and no strings. @TheConormac1
@TheConormac1 13 лет назад
@scoliva The bluefin tuna is a threatened (destined to be endangered without immediate action) species that is attacked by many fronts. The killing of a large bluefin tuna was undeniably unsustainable. If he was spearfishing a sustainable stock of fish, I would have little problem with the video. There is no point on lying; there is no way to sustainably fish bluefin tuna.
@d7l4NEb
@d7l4NEb 14 лет назад
There is zero “BY CATCH” when using a speargun to obtain fish. “BY CATCH” is a term used by biologists and conservation organizations to describe the accidental killing of non targeted species such as other fish, sea turtles and dolphins, ect. For example, the netting of tuna often captures and kills other marine species such as turtles and dolphins in the process.
@d7l4NEb
@d7l4NEb 14 лет назад
f you think it is wrong for an individual to use a speargun to take fish from the ocean for the purpose of consumption with zero negative impact to the environment, while in full compliance with state and federal game laws, please review the following scientifically proven and indisputable facts.True spear fishermen and spear fisherwomen take only fish that they eat.

Look, if you are a vegetarian and you believe that we do not have the right to kill animals for food, I can respect your position- although then one might wonder why one would waste time with spearfishers, when factory farming of animals is the nr1 culprit. If you are not, then your comment is totally and utterly irrational.

Ah! Thats interesting, maybe it depends on where they were shot. If they ruin with the stress, i expect if you spear them in the body, that must be worth less than if you kill them outright through the brain. But maybe the Japanese are very particular about the method of catching the fish and wont take it anyway. Cheers for the info mate

I don't know anything about spear fishing so Do such big fish really swim so close to the surface, or did you have to drop chum constantly to lure it to the surface? Does it not swim away when it sees divers in the water? How many guys were on the boat? or was there a second boat? (it looked like 5 guys during the video)

I doubt it. The famous $100,000 tuna you're probably thinking of was bought for many times it's normal value by a couple of crazy sushi chefs. A google search tells me that the average price per kilo for bluefin tuna in Japan is 8000 yen. Which means this tuna is probably worth about 22,000 dollars.

In japan they catch them by handline fishing called ippontsuri (one line fishing) then they shock em so the the flesh doesnt ruin due to the stress. if thats the case that fish wold got for about 35k or more. Im interested to see if they would take them speared.

You all think this is a massive fish! Wat a load of crap, he's killed a baby! thats why i hate Spearfisherman, they spear a 300kg fish and think their doing the world a favour, iv seen pictures of these 700kg!! they us to get to a 1000Kg before the liners fished em out. =(

hahaha! "how do you get one eaten" well TomVoorham, i dont freeze fresh fish and i dont buy fish. so even a 20kg fish gets shared with my neighbours, family and friends. i dont know anyone that eats fish that would knock back a free slab of SBT.

He did it for the challenge? So it's challenging for a human, "the highest form of life", to set up kills of other creatures that won't stand a fair chance? How about he get in the water and wrestle with a shark if he really wants a challenge.

Congratulation on your catch! I am agree with you, spear fising is the most suitable method for fishing because you are only catching selected fish. Commercial trawler are the biggest problem because they are take all kind of species and sizes.

correct me if im wrong but i dont think that trawler was fishing for the bluefin? I have a dvd where they go out off new zealand and look for these trawlers that catch Hokey? whatever they're called, and the tuna feed off the scrap the trawler throws out

wwf.panda.org/what_we_do/footprint/smart_fishing/sustainable_fisheries/bluefin_tuna/ Let me just say I do spearfish and I love the sport but I think we do have a responsibility to target species that arent on the endagered list. Just a thought.

@DeathNeedsTime ive never been blue water spearing but id like to see them do it in even shallow water with shallow water species, nothing compared to blue water but it still involves skill, i'd kill to have a blue water experience

that was just incredible! so how much would a tuna that size be worth?? are we talking in the region of $35000 if u sell it to japan or am i just totally wrong? ive heard that massive tuna fetch tens of thousands of dollars out there, because of the sushi.

You missunderstood my message....I was been sarcastic to those people who hates our sport, and yes, I just came back from Panama beach after 4 full days of spearfishing. Congratulation about your 100kg stripie.

I love conserving a fishery but after these tree hugger comments, I want to kill every fish for spite. Including gay dolphins. And whales.

@scoliva ... If he fished animals sustainably, I have no problem. However, he did not and should be castigated for his actions. I am a fisherman myself and can fish sustainably, so can he.

Awesome shot to the spinal chord, if not that fish would have dragged the man into an abyss, it has happened to me before, Not easy to do. Hope you had a lot of sushi for a great party

@TheConormac1 A guy swims down 50 or 60 feet into a ball-shrinkingly cold Tasman Sea and shoots a spear through a 282kg fish. Hardly an efficient method for eradicating a species.
