spearfishing lings and cabs in central california. all fish were taken freediving on breathhold and nothing was wasted. the first ling was 26 pounds and the last one was only a little under that.
For all the people hating on him for spearfishing ,let me be the first to say It is very hard to catch a good size fish using this method , lets see a pole fisherman jump in the water ,hold his breath for up to a 1-1/2 minutes , dive 20-35 feet deep , find the fish , aim for a fish , hit the fish then pull it up to the top, believe me alot harder then it looks. this sport definitely takes mad skills. Great vid and nice lingcods you guys
Very very nice. I don't recall seeing vis like that ever when diving the Central Coast... maybe Big Sur... Some great fish. ... Off Montagne De Oro I jumped in and immediately managed to get two 15 pound lings. I threw them in the boat and as I went down I got the visual of my buddy standing on his seat trying to whack them with a pair of pliers... They were still pretty lively.
What I don’t understand is how do they manage to stay so buoyant with such giant balls. This is the equivalent of crawling into a wolfs den with a pocket full of dog treats. Especially if they’re off the coast of California.
That's good living, you guys hiked down to the beach, kicked out to your spot, brought back some of the best tasting cod, and you left no carbon signature, that is brilliant.
Carbon is not harmful, nor is carbon dioxide; it's plant food and essential for all life, that's why greenhouse farmers quadruple the amount of co2 in their greenhouses to increase yields dramatically. Wake up, you've been duped by politicians attempts to demonize the energy based industry that sustains all civilization and line their pockets with cash.
Great catches. That will keep you full for a while! Nice braining job on that lingcod at the end, its hard to brain those big buggers with nothing to balance yourself on.
Bro! some of the best kelp footage I've ever seen. you definitely captured the beauty of your surroundings while making an awesome hunting vid. my only suggestion would be to find a more stable platform for the camera. got a little dizzy. great music BTW. spear on!
Nice video! That vis was beautiful! Just one little tip, never strap your fish onto your belt. I know some freedivers who have died from their fish being tangled in the kelp. Have fun, Be safe!
Was admiring this fantastic video, the absolute dragons ya'll are getting ... then at the end... you're kids!!! What a life! Congrats, ya'll are killin it.
Excellent job! I have zero problems with fishing or spearfishing. I'm a huge fisherman myself. I'd just like to say, I think we should let those huge ling's live. They grow slow and that fish was old as hell. I'd like to see more biggins being caught. Myself, I only keep the small legal sized ones. Great eating. Great trophy fish too. Nice job on the dive. Keep on enjoying nature
I've never spearfished around WA state, but I've spearfished other locations where water gets to be about 42F and it is cold! You're right, it takes a lot of skills and stamina to be spearfishing on cold waters. Often, I spearfish until I cannot feel my hands and my core stomach area gets very cold. I have to be careful since it is easy to get hyperthermia. Also, remember, spearfishing is the most environmentally sound way to catch a fish. Maybe they should put a limit to the size of the fish. I wish there was a easy way to recognize a female. I would definitely leave them alone.
Awesome video guys, ignore the negative comments it's fishing there's a million ways of doing it no one way works for everyone. So great haul and honestly great video all together awesome visibility. Buying my gear to try his it looks awesome
I'm shocked by the great viz! It's almost never that good here in Oregon. That plus the dreamers who call themselves researchers want the world to think we're down to the last handful of fish when you can still find yourself in freaking clouds of blacks, blues, and if you want to get a good look at big lings just make some noise, rake your gun on the rocks and the curious yummy critters come out to say hi!
What clarity, thank you much. As a teen I enjoyed sling fishing but these days I use a rod and reel. Your video is so clear I'm able to see why we get hung on the bottom so often. Of course we fish at about 150 feet. It's also rare to catch the really big Kings these days too.
Hi man, nice vid! Have you dived the outside (ocean side) of Morro Rock? I've seen people going inside the channel but is not very good... know anything about that spot?
Centralcoaststories Thanks! Can't wait to get out! What's the vis like on average?

@@sagiplantation this is carmel, man. it's not "monterey area" hahaha I keep pausing the video to find your dive spot. you wanna help me out and make it easy for me by sending the gps coordinates or something? stillwater or river beach?
I know most people dont share location but can you please just give me a city where this was done im verry new to the sport would love to have a bit of advice
amoshilel123 GO TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST, GUALALA, ANCHOR BAY, ALBION, FORT BRAGG OR SONOMA COUNTY, MENDOCINO COUNTY...THOSE ARE GOOD SPOTS FOR SPEARFISHING N' ABALONE GATHERING.
If I had to guess location, I'd guess just south of Monterey, down a mile or two from the point.........you had great visibility day, they don't come much clearer than this on the CA coastline. Best you can usually hope for is 20-25 feet vis.......
Well Thomas, I was speaking as a fisherman, not a scuba diver.......I'm sure you would have a better idea on underwater visibility, from your vantage point. I've only fished south of Monterey, CA perhaps 2-3 times.......mostly, over the past 45 years I've fished out of Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, or at China Basin just south of the Bay Bridge, taking day trips out through the Potato Patch and points west, so my "normal fishing range" is probably between Duxbury Reef, which is above Stinson Beach, everywhere and anywhere in-between and around the Channel Buoys and out to 5-10 miles out past the Farallon Islands, and point south, all the way down to fishing off of the Officer's Club in Monterey Bay for salmon when they are down there.........what used to be known as the "bloody triangle", up until the late 1980's, before we started seeing White Sharks following the seals and sea lion populations farther southward down the coast, being spotted and attacking beach-surfing humans, over the past 10-15 years. In general, I would say the water visibility in all of those areas is about 15 feet, on average.
There are plenty divers around, but really only a few hardcore guys. The best advice I can give is to just find a buddy and get out and explore the area. there's so much great diving in central cal. glad you enjoyed the video.
Lings are territorial and take along time to mature. With this number of people taking the fish they are displaying on one outing, they will be gone soon! If commercial fisherman are also targeting them it's guaranteed.
People are off center, with the anti hunting, anti fishing, didn’t Jesus apostles fish?… is it ok to eat an egg, do any of the the antis wear leather shoes boots? Yes these issues must be regulated, or there would be nothing. We got to eat.I am going to have some steak and salom tonight, thanks Bearhunter5.
Centralcoaststories ...I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU; HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED ''BLACKOUTS'' OR ''BORDER-LINE-BLACKOUTS'' WHILE DIVING TOO DEEP OR BREATH-HOLDING TOO LONG..? IF SO...HOW DID IT FEEL N' HOW CAN WE PREVENT IT FROM HAPPENING REPEATEDLY...I AM CONCERN...BECAUSE IT IS DEADLY DANGEROUS...
Clement Ortiz I haven't experienced anything like that personally, but i know people who have. There's a few things that you can do to prevent them, a big one is don't hyperventilate before a dive, which some people do to increase their breath hold, but mostly just don't push you're limits, and don't dive alone.
Hello form the DOC. You may or may not know you killed a Ling Cod from what I saw the fish is over 60years old. We have laws to protect the larger fish. Also big breeder Ling cod lay over 50,000 eggs and only breed with one mate.. FOR LIFE...
+TMKey Film Your timing is a little off according to Wikipedia. The max. lifespan of a lingcod is about 14 - 20 years. When they are fully mature they weigh as much as 100 pounds. So it is not likely that these fish are any older than 6-8 years old. Thanks for you concern about these creatures. The population should be monitored in any area.
when he realizes that life feeds off life and that is just how the cycle of life is we can then call him "Man" Trent. This is why a traditional rite of passage for boys was to go hunting with the men-folk in the tribe to celebrate life and feed the village. We don't do that anymore, now Boys cling to their mothers and expect the government to suckle them through life.
thats the problem. At my beach in california, I see so many youngsters that wants to try spearfishing. And guess what they dont care about the size till they catch at least one..
mzacon ...DON'T WORRY, THE LINGCOD POPULATION HAS INCREASED DRAMATICALLY, IN FACT THE DAILY QUOTA PER PERSON HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY UPGRADED FROM TWO TO THREE.
Looks like you and your boys just wiped out an entire niche population of Lingcod. Not sure this is the wisest thing to do, if you hope to get back to fishing these locations.
Ryan Sampson Just because the state is allowing more harvest doesn't necessarily mean it's because the population is doing better. 2011 Striped bass eradication plans come to mind. The state is known to have ulterior motives when it comes to stuff like this. Hope it's not though, I personally think 3 lings a day is a lot of fish, especially since most guys already take home 10 rocks.
James Zachary yea if everyone lives by your logic we won’t have them to fish bro. I fish all the time I don’t care he is spear fishing just stick to the rules. I’m glad he caught a big monster but fuck catching that many is bs
This is why spearfishing pisses me off. Unlike us sport fishermen you guys can pick out the biggest lings and spear them. Those are big females and while thats a tremendous size for central california they really should be down there breeding. Plus theyre not the best eating size. Stick to the 26-32" fish at let those big girls breed.
I understand your point, but spearfishing is by far the most sustainable way to collect, and gather from the ocean. It is the only completely non by-catch method of fishing,. Even sport fishermen will once and a while hook into something that they aren't supposed to that won't make it. Besides, at least we're not loosing gear and releasing toxic lead into the ocean, or leaving long strands of almost invisible mono, stretching like close-lines through the kelp. You do have a point about being more selective, but if you pulled up a huge ling while line fishing, would you honestly throw it back? If so, than good for you! It tasted pretty good to me! :) ps. you act like it is easy to pick off lings on a very treacherous coast while descending into underwater caves all the while starved of oxygen. Most sport fishermen that i know reel up fish from nice boats, yards out of the water with equipment meant to make their life even easier, all the while never getting a drop of water on them or risking anymore thank a spined finger.
Centralcoaststories SPEARFISHING IS THE MOST CHALLENING METHOD OF HARVESTING FOOD SOURCE OUT OF THE OCEAN. I TIP MY HAT TO YOU, WATCHING THIS VIDEO MOTIVATES ME TO RETURN TO SPEARFISHING AGAIN, I AM HUNTING BIG GAME AT THE MOMENT...I NEED TO WORK OUT N' SHAPE UP TO FIT INTO MY OLD WETSUIT...
Wow. No fishing limit for one fish per day no minimum size. I guess it is a killings paradise in California. If you do this in other places you can pay up to 6000 $ fine.
Shame on you! Those big female fish are the breeders in that ecosystem! I’m a vegan and even I know they don’t taste good! You should have thrown them back after you shot them and saw how big they were! Also... where is this? Farallons?
