Was wondering if I could get some rough spots of where it is legal to spearfish in La Jolla. Not specifics, just where I could legally go as I'm just starting to spearfish. Thanks in advance
Might want to check on the legality of your fish size, specifically the female sheephead. We try to let those live, they are good for the reef. Nice start, just remember to be a smart conservationist.
Hey boss, one question: Do you use a float/flag or a drop line when you hit the kelp beds? From what I've found, it's not required here in Cali, but what's your take on them?
Sup man, this video was from years ago and at the time i didnt but its not a bad idea to carry a float with you seeing as i was almost hit by a jet ski swimming to the kelp one day. i Reccomend some kind of float for sure, just for safety. But personally i hate diving with floats and avoid them if i can. Just one more thing to have to drag around.
hi! i was just down in SD yesterday and i wanted to spear in la Jolla but when i checked the regulations, i saw that it was a no take area. is there a spot where you can? i'm not asking for specific spots, i'm still fairly new at this sport but i was ended up in torrey pines because that whole la jolla area is protected until you reach the Scripps reserve
Very cool video. It brought back lot's of good memories for me when I use to spearfish up in Malibu when I lived in L.A. Questions, how deep is it out there in the kelp beds, and do you know the same of the song and the group on your video? Thanks for posting. Also, don't know if you ever just go snorkeling at La Jolla Cove, but during the last 2 summers I saw a sea turtle and a grey whale there.
dgarber771 In the video I was in about 45-60ft of water. The group is called Rebelution, they have a lot of good songs. Sorry for the late response, I just finished Air Force Basic training.
Nice video man I just recently got the Mires viper pro and I've been meaning to try it out. I'm pretty new to socal so just wondering if it would be worth it to go out durning January/ February because ground fish season is closed didn't see many bass in the footage so was a bit skeptical in going thinking it might be a waste of time if you can't target the main species of fish in that area. what are your thoughts? think its worth it to go out during that time and try to target bass or just wait till the season opens up again? P.S sorry for the late comment
I think its worth it, ground fish as in rockfish? Season is open year round for spearfisherman, not for anglers though. At least that was how it was a few years ago. Brush up on the regs. You can definitely shoot some good stuff out there in Jan/Feb. If you can swim out to the kelp and dive 40-50ft you will be golden. If you cant go so deep, the shallows can always provide some action but not as much.
David Seiler I go out until I reach the kelp beds. Sometimes it gets clearer the farther you go out, and sometimes it doesn't, but generally the water is clear enough in the kelp to spear a couple fish. The swim to the kelp takes anywhere from 15-40 minutes depending on where I start.
Sick video. I'll be TDY out there in two weeks from MacDill and was planning brining some gear and doing some West Coast spearing. Need a dive buddy for the first weekend in August?
I cant give exact spots but basically anywhere in the kelp beds you should have a good shot at them, look for good rock structure in the kelp and you should be good to go! Dont forget to subscribe for more videos in the future!
If that happens then the only thing you can do is release the fish. If the fish you are about to shoot even seems questionable in size just dont shoot it. Only go for the fish you know are gonna be legal.
Its an Omer camu 3d speargun with omer reel. Ive since got rid of the gun, the trigger mechanism got gunked up on me and something broke so the trigger pull was really bad. I would highly recommend a Riffe Euro 100 or 110 for diving socal waters, its an awesome gun. Throw a riffe reel on it and youre set.
Albert...dude. Is this your preferred glove setup for your dives or are you running a little tight on the moolah? We need to take up donations for our man here so he can protect his hands and make more videos lol. Nice footage 😀
great vids. My parents live over off of PB. I dive and snorkel La Jolla all the time. One question, what is the stuff on you fingers? Tin foil or duct tape? Thanks.
