Extra note on the Clayman's Harpoon: Giving it a Faith-based infusion allows it to keep Intelligence as the second scaling factor, making it a good weapon for FTH/INT builds.
@@personeater2664 I played with the SoNaF for the entire game after I got to altus plateau, and the way they scaled it, it's able to perform just fine at base stats. As long as you keep steadily upgrading Int and Fth it'll rarely let you down. And if you really need more stat points for it to be good, slap on marika's scar/soreseal, best talismans for fth/int builds.
Thank you Fextralife for all you hard work. Your Wiki, and the interactive map on there, has helped me an immeasurable amount. I’ve played the Dark Souls trilogy extensively and Bloodborne, and I’m about to finally 100% a Miyazaki game because of your help. Thank you, thank you.
@@Fapnyrmain director/creator of almost all the souls games from demon souls to dark souls to sekiro to Elden ring. The only game in the series he did not work on was dark souls 2.
There is one small cool thing about the basic Spear. If you go kill Patches in Murkwater Cave, which is in Limgrave, he drops a +7 Spear, meaning you can pick up a somewhat upgraded weapon really early which will save you some resources if the Spear isn't the infusible spear you actually want to invest in
@@From_A_Diverging_Timeline yup you're definitely right there, it's not too hard to speed run to get the smithing stone bell bearing for upgrades to +6, so killing patches for a +7 not so great weapon is not really worth it.
@@santumyar the helm , greaves and gloves arnt awful but yeah the chest peice is pretty ugly. I use lionels helm, gloves and greaves with the raptor black feathers chest peice and it looks pretty cool and gives I think 53 poise. So the first break point
Since he didn't mention it, I'd like to point out that the Bolt of Gransax is AMAZING against Malenia. She doesn't dodge it if you fully charge the weapon skill, and you can use it to attack her from WAY outside her range. You'll still need to learn her moves for phase 2 as she will manage to catch up to you sometimes and/or will reach you with Waterfowl Dance, but this weapon was by far the easiest way I found to fight her.
Ironically enough, Radahn's greatswords are one of her banes, too, as she takes big ass stagger every single time you press R1, and is knocked down everytime you press L2 two times.
Spears are really one of the most versatile weapons in Elden Ring. Having that extra reach on enemies can be a god send in certain situations and since a lot of baddies have to be really close to attack, it's easy to get hits in and be at a safe distance, plus it does good poise stagger to a good chunk of them. Also, enemies tend to "line up" or stack up when you back away so you can stab multiple baddies with one thrust. They are also the best weapon to use on Torrent. They are not the best or the flashiest, but they are very reliable in a lot of situations.
We need the Ringed Knight Spear in this game, after playing Nioh 2 soulsborne spears are more boring than before. Reason why I like using the guardian spear and Loretta sickle.
After Nioh 2, almost all fromsoft games are boring as hell, with the exception of level design. Team Ninja literally does everything From does, only less boring, less lovecraftian and less lore heavy. Don't get me wrong, I loved all the souls titles. I've platinumed them all without hesitation. Nioh's combat, build customization and character creation is just lightyears ahead. Souls combat is hollow in comparison and don't even get me started on how a dark souls "build" comes down to a couple stats and a few accessories. Lol
Naginata really deserves to be used by itself without powerstancing to let the elegant moveset shine. Remember that while one-handing it, the roll/crouch attack is a long fast poke rather than the borderline useless short swipe of the 2H moveset, and you barely lose any damage one-handing on a dex build. This also allows you to keep a buckler, seal, or sidearm etc in the left hand at all times, giving you more immediate on-demand options. I tend to carry a Wakizashi in the left hand to deal with close-range emergencies like dogs and imps where the Naginata has trouble. And of course Impaling Thrust is a disgustingly good move for this weapon.
I used Naginata powerstanced with Bolt of Greatsex lol. I was just blasting lightning spears at enemies for the most of time and wielded Naginata for badass fashion.
It just occured to me while watching this but spears are actully the only weapon type I never used on any of my builds so far. Maybe it's time to change that now.
I can't begin to thank you all for your hard work both here and on the wiki. I am sure you get comments all the time about 'why aren't you talking about my fav weapon category' but I was hoping you could do a video on shields. In all of the vids in this series so far you start off about talking about the different playstyles, and a majority of them have some sort of pairing with shields in a block counter style. I was hoping you could either go more in depth about which shield you would pair with which weapon and why when you start talking about your preferences with the individual weapons, or do a series of videos on the pros and cons of the different shields. It would certainly help a noob like me who kind of gets lost in the tables on the wiki.
2 things I noticed you missed: The partisan can be acquired way earlier by farming the godrick knight in front of gatefront ruins And the spiked spear dealing strike dmg with the heavy attack.
@@thedeadmeme7877 Use the wolves or jellyfish as your distraction. Later game, use hoarfrost stomp. Hoarfrost is my go to for farming. Acts as great crowdcontrol.
@@thedeadmeme7877 Run away towards the mountainside and jump up on the rocks. He's vulnerable in his jumping animation, so attack and then jump off again. Repeat until dead.
When you are dex small weapons built but you realize you need a spear to kill dragons because they are hard to reach and they are weak to thrust, bolt of gransax is perfect, because it also has 20% bonus damage to dragons
just please don't use it agaisnt Lansseax or Fortissax. It only deals +10% against ancient dragons and those two have 80% lightning resist. Also it does no extra damage against Placidusax, cause that one isn't a dragon or ancient dragon EDIT: better use a pure piercing damage spear with dragonwound grease (+20% against ancient dragons) against those 2
Went with a 20/20 pike and cross naga. For early game. But I felt this points cold be distributed differently for a early game colossal. I feel that quality builds are better but sometimes the duel wield and damage with spears can be UNDERWHELMING. Example: I win with colossal but ify with duel spears in invasions and normal mobs in pve. Thank you for the video sir. I appreciate your work. I I love your wiki page. Helps a lot
Occult infusion works really well on the spiked spear and cross naginata because it allows your arcane stat to scale both the base bleed and damage of these weapons. You loose out on around 10-30 AR over keen, but you gain up to 50 more bleed. The ash of war seppuku works well with these weapons as it buffs them with 30 attack power and 30 base bleed that scales with arcane.
Pike is actually incredible weapon if you go with the strength based greatshield + spear build. It makes the game much easier and tou are roght to point out repeating thrust is a way to go with this weapon in the sense that it can also inflict status effects more quickly.
I’ve always loved spears as they are great weapons that have seen incredible amounts of use throughout human history but have been mostly slept on in media. I’m glad there are some good spear options in elden ring.
one of the reasons i like fromsoftware games so much is that they don’t just jerk off swords endlessly like most fantasy media. Halberds, spears, axes, and tons of other historical weapons are pretty much all viable
Another thing to note for the Clayman's: The thing is lovely for the the Ice Spear AoW. The native Int scaling lets it scale very well when changed to cold affinity, which makes it feel like the perfect pairing for an already amazing AoW,
Probably not, but it gives you a ranged option to take advantage of and likely scales the weapon better with INT, letting you hybrid optimally @@MrWigpeeler
@@Paradox484 Thanks, I’ll give it a whirl. I do like the great shield and poke style now I’m starting last third of game (I think). Damage is not spectacular but survivability is crazy.
Question: When the top few affinities are shown along with their attack power values, wouldn't the character's stats affect those values? Don't we need to know the character's stats for those attack power values to have any meaning? For example if the character has 80 intelligence but every other stat is low, then the attack power of the Magic affinity would be much higher than the rest but it wouldn't be a meaningful comparison. I think I am probably missing something obvious - please help me understand how the attack power values of each affinity can be compared without additional context like character stats. Thanks 🤔
You are right. I'd recommend checking out Chrightt's weapon guides instead. They are much more detailed and show all the stats when talking about infusions and are also at a specified level of stat investment.
The banished knight halberd was pretty sick and I just like it's move set. I fully upgraded the halberd with holy rings ash of war(forgive me I forgot its name at the moment) and with my 70 faith it would just devastate.
One of my favorite characters, a dex/faith hybrid focusing on lighting incantations, uses the Gransax Bolt and a seal offhand in hybrid fashion. Very fun and effective. The spear is the primary ranged attack with the ancient dragon cult incantations for hard hitting, close in work. The Gransax's charged R2 does tremendous poise damage too.
Interesting! I beat the game with a dex arcane build running rivers of blood (used dex/int moonveil mid game) but I recently started new game + and have been trying a faith strength build running the bastard sword, its a lot of fun but I might try your build out, I need something a bit faster then what I've got now
@@vheataylorsyorkies7215 I went with dex/faith for that particular character because of the many synergies between dex and lightning damage. I have characters for pretty much every ma8n type of build including a Str/fth build using a clawmark seal for bestial incantations and crucible knight armor for the crucible incantations. He dual wields a pair of Iron Greatswords. All my characters are hybrids, I find straight melee to be too boring and spells are too shiny and fun to ignore. I will be starting a fire based character at some point, there are some very good fire weapons in the game.
Fantastic work as usual and it's always awesome to see combos for weapons I don't get to use, but I'm kinda surprised that the occult infusion isn't mentioned for weapons like the spiked spear and cross-naginatta? Also a question to anyone that knows, as I'm not certain if it would be viable or not, would the sacred/flame infusion be a plausible infusion on the clayman's spear for death/golden order builds that aim for high levels of intelligence and faith?
One thing I've always disliked with basically every spear in Souls games is that they're all pokes. Spears can slash and bonk with the other end. Swords get plenty of varied movesets, but it seems like they just couldn't be asked to make spears cool. Santier's Spear in (once again, the best out of the bunch) Dark Souls 2 had what I was looking for.
@@WizzlyBearW0rms you could always keep a cross naginata on you bc it deals both pierce and slash. you could also have a backup weapon for the instances where pierce isn’t viable. you could also just power through and deal with dealing less damage or try and use greases to build up status effects.
Clayman's Harpoon its so good for int/hybrid builds, occult for arc/int and sacred for fai/int. Even heavy is good for str/int with an A en str scaling and D en int scaling
I just realized you keep referring to all of these weapon types as the “best”. The word best is a superlative, and can’t apply to multiple different subjects. You are clearly wrong with your assessment. I ask that you change the language you use. (Sarcasm)
This is the one I’ve been waiting for. Ever since Drang Twin-spear in dark souls 3 I’ve been in love with the dual spear sets. As expected my favorite spear is disproportionately poor, but the Iron spear just looks so cool 😎
Torch pole is actually pretty good early game Since its fire damage is a static number added on your base damage And it being a torch makes it pretty good for safely clearing out dark areas Its more of a utility than a weapon
I have a feeling that the Bolt of Cransax WA does more damage on targets standing in water, but that would need to be confirmed. UPD: just remembered that water and rain reduces the overall resistance to lightning, goes for both player and mobs.
I regularly don't mind enemies having pierce resistance because we love fromtsoft for making us have different weapon slots. And I also use the Partisan by 2-handing it because it looks cool and I can go past 1k Attack Rating (including my buffs, mostly just 680 AR at base which is still very good)
The perfect weapon exists based off preference. Any weapon group in the game can be the best based off how you use it and experience. Eg; I prefer katanas and have over 150 hours of use with them whilst my friend prefers great swords and has an equal amount of time-based experience with them. All just a matter of preference. Your build matters a bit too.
Wow, like 2-3 days ago I wrote a comment in on of your videos that I wish you make a video this type with spears and bam, there it is lol, can you please make one with great spears as well ? Love your work, so much needed information.
Flails Please! Not joking, I like them. My first play through was dual Flails and they've been buffed since launch, so it be cool to see some Flail love.
I always wanted to beef up the black knight flail as I love their armor, it's what I always wear. As far as armor do you think elden ring emphasizes agility or players tactical skills for defense over your armor choice? I do, but am curious what other players think.
Say what you will, but I think building ANY video game character around a single attack animation or pattern is BORING. The theme I continue to witness from Elden Ring guides, like this, is [get exactly {these} items, then press {these} buttons]. Idk, that's just me.
I know what you mean, and I've thought about it a lot in my time with Elden Ring. I change up builds and playstyles frequently because I get bored quickly and I like collecting weapons. Unfortunately, I think that's just the nature of the combat in Fromsoft's Souls games. Even if not min-maxing, players are generally going to gravitate towards a specific playstyle, e.g. block counter, parry, etc. and that's going to bring specific items with it. No build is going to be a one-button solution to every problem - players still need to know how to dodge on time, manage stamina/health/mana, and handle different enemy types and group sizes. That's where the variety and strategy comes from. But most builds still end up focusing on one or two specific attacks, and that's typically where I get bored. IMHO, the solution to the problem of repetitive movesets was already solved by the Nioh games. The Nioh games had their own problems, but bringing in Ninja Gaiden-style combat was a great idea. Team Ninja broke combat down into different weapon types, each with their own advantages and disadvantages, and then gave those weapon types *stances* AND different skill trees/movesets that players could specialize in. This meant that by the end of the game, the player had an arsernal of techniques to mix things up. There was still room for basic attacks alongside the more elaborate combos and it meant there was a lot more nuance and, maybe more importantly, creativity inherent in the combat.
You mentioned Inquisitor's girandole being good for ng+, but didn't quite get the point across, it has one of the best dual wield dps (third best at max level), and significantly outranges the other high dps max level options, along with bleed build up. Optimal stat spread can be reached around ng+2. It also has similar scaling to the magma blades, which have the best dps in the entire game.
Been waiting for this 😊 Edit: I was a little too excited and didn't realize they would not cover the big ol' spears (which is my favourite next to greatswords and katanas)
I'm curious to know how you're gonna handle the upcoming DLC with this series. The most comfortable option, imo, would be to make a DLC weapons are the best weapon in Elden ring, but maybe you have other ideas in mind (I guess it'll all depend on how many weapons the DLC introduces).
@@common_undead I think it's because, unlike with other spears, the double power attack is a faster extending forward strike, makes attacking, and instantly rolling away so much easier. But tbh, with the amount of sheer magic spammers in pvp, i honestly don't feel guilty about it. I bow before and after fights, rather than being a toxic dick when winning, plus i wear near 0 armor, the rotten duelist set, Elden Bling ect,
I fell in love with spears and staffs when I played dark souls and got Ornstein’s spear. I don’t know why but using a spear or staffs with such precision using the length as leverage for more powerful and precise attacks just tickles me right
Bro if i use wighte mask and talisman bleed it will give me 30% ? Because mask give me 10% and the talisman give 20% .. so together can be 30% ? Or just one of them work ?
