With this video I will show you a procedure that helps you to attach front bolster into the scandi rat tail (also hidden tang) in a new way at least to me, without too many drillings and filing with micro files. I learnt this method from Finnish knife maker Tapio Syrjälä tsyrjala.blogsp....
It's there in facebook/puukkoareena showed in pictures. Unfortunately you need finnish knowledge to follow the procedure over there. Perhaps? i don't know who invented nor procedured this. Anyway, with Tapio's permission I will show now the procedure here in RU-vid in a way I have understood those pictures. Anyone with better knowledge please correct if you can do it otherwise. I have now followed this information on my puukko knife works maybe five times and it looks good to me.
Thank you Tapio for your skills and never stop enjoying seeing your works.
This knife will be finished in Germany at Bushcraft Akademie meeting later in this year; handle shape. (Near future). Hope you could wittness it there?
Osmo

That's brilliant! I've been wanting to make one of these knives badly, but the intimidation of filing the bolster has kept me from it. I've made a couple of hidden tang knives with brass bolsters, and filing never goes well. If I can find something to punch that initial hole, I'm going to give this a try. Thanks!
@thetopicala
@thetopicala 8 лет назад
Great! Even if you didn't find proper tool you can lighten the material from the back and easier to file it with hands too. Try it that way. Thanks, Osmo

All thru this video I'm thinking why no carbide ball burr mill to remove material & how about a arbor press to evenly pressure the plate onto the tang ? Very nice job Ozz

Brilliant video Osmo. My Leuku blade has arrived, just need to decide which wood to use. I would really like to use some stabilised curly birch but not much available for reasonable money at the moment. All the best, Jim

Osmo..have you considered Arbor press for punching thru on bolsters? Especially where you thin the brass i think this might work instead of hammering

Lovely technique! I don't mind the work of filing or drilling so I needn't look for the specialized punches, but the illustration of how to get a good fit made something click in my mind so I can attempt a project like this. Got a lovely handmade puuko blade on ebay and I want to find some scrap brass to try this with
@thetopicala
@thetopicala 6 лет назад
Febeleh Great! You can achieve great fit for your scandi and front plate without any special punches now that you understand that soft metal like brass yields in front of some power and carbon steel. 💪🏻

Interesting idea - I’ll try this some time! Since I don’t have these tools yet, I’ll try hammering the bolster the last millimeters in its place after filing. Should have the same result!?

Andreas Müller Thanks! It works well without those tools too. Just lighten from backside enough before hammering. You learn those tricks by tries! Osmo

Hallo Osmo, interesting technique. - Bolster thinning by grinding from the back (with multi-tool like Dremel) - Then penetrate the tang form with the special punching tool from the front. - Final alignment by hammering of the hardened tang, which pushes the thinner hole edge and softer Frontbolster material "to the side". = Nestled with hammer Wow..... Crucially, you need the right hardened punching tool. Many thanks for showing, Osmo Servus, Joachim
@thetopicala
@thetopicala 8 лет назад
Or you need to make a whole without punching tool and start lighten the metal away of the tang and repeat that many times. The shape of the blade/tand makes it too and actually it has to do in the end. Thanks, Osmo

Hi Osmo, that did turn out to be an amazingly tight fit. Well done!! So the purpose of thinning the underside is to make it so the special tool will just press through allowing to have a very tight fit? Very nice, thanks sharing a tip from a master knifemaker!
@thetopicala
@thetopicala 8 лет назад
Thank you Nathan! Thinnig, lightening also makes the tang go easier through the tight hole and it won't twist the bolster too much. Osmo

If I may give you one advice. I make the guards like this - heat the brass untill red with a torch or something. Than cool it down rapidly (quench it) in water. This will soften the brass/copper/nikelsilver. Than it is much easier to work with the metal guard.
@thetopicala
@thetopicala 8 лет назад
Great advice if it would help! Thank you! Osmo

tricky not making an error with over lightening or creating any inadvertant air gaps between blade and bolster i do not have these specialised punches? i can see the reason for using them speeds up ease of construction? less hard work needed forming or filing etc this is why id like to test my teeth on something straight forwards firstly until familiar with all the more intricate processes procedures im lacking some of the tools you have belt sander specialist punches i do not want to make a botch jobs of it cuz working with metal can be hard work pretty unforgiving if you make any errors!! as a novice learner!! i probably woukdnt come out the workshop for weeks! family lodge a missing persons report to local police! who find me in a state of depression still filing a gouge out of a 5mm bolster wondering when am i ever going to make a hole in it?
@thetopicala
@thetopicala 8 лет назад
You can try it without those tools too. Drill the hole or to andwhen ever the tang starts going in lighten the backside, give a punch and lighten again. Punch and lighten. it works, I know! Osmo
@6brettes
@6brettes 8 лет назад
+thetopicala that sounds about right concerning metal fit!! i shall use a dremel or tip of angle grinder i have vertical drill jig and punch sets metal blocks or sheet metal for evening out the bolster knock angle grinder or dremel tool attachments angle grinder may be too aggressive im keeping my eye out for a good belt sander 2nd hand! if i get into it?
@6brettes

+thetopicala yeh i shall tinker about go easy slowly to begin with i like having the proper tools when ever i do something just makes life a lot easier i can acheive most tooling tasks but in a roundabouts way!!

Thanks John! Yes, there are only couple of rules to follow; tang must be thinner from the end compared to bolster's final place, lighten bravely, tang makes the shape and use power!
