@1982MCI
@1982MCI 3 года назад
You weed not get this level of detail for $15k, that’s a slap in the face to Wes! The finish alone on these cabinets for a nice size kitchen is going to run you nearly that just for the finish and then your gonna still have to build the custom cabinetry. I know you weren’t meaning anything bad towards Wes at all, it’s just most folks don’t have a clue as to how labor intensive and expensive that a true custom cabinet can be. But lord they are beautiful!! I do hope tho that your kitchen turned out beautiful anyways and that it was all you were dreaming of! Take care and be safe out there

Hi Wes, like your explanations. You´re a great teacher. Thanks for that. For SHOU SUGI BAN and CERUSING I use also metallic wax like Rub´n Buff - cool stuff. Gives a nice metallic gloss. I use it on a guitar finish. After preparing and staining with leather dye, I rub in the wax and than whipe off the exess with ground oil like Liberon. Than give a finish. I use most Tungoil. Can also do a finish with sealing 2 coates of superglue (bit dangerous) and than polishing with PEEK polish. - Amazing Greetings from Frankfurt Germany. God bless you.

Tried this technique -3 experiments First off there is a nation wide shortage of the Sherwin Williams primer and the water borne Windsong II waterborne furniture glaze Second I learned that this works best on bare wood which means sanding down your old cabinets to bare. Third this works best when it is not hot/humid weather…. I had to work in my garage door open and the primer took over 6 hrs to be dried enuf to take the stain and the stain dried so quickly it was difficult to work on a whole door and get a consistent wiped surface. I used zinser water base primer with brush and ml Campbell alkyl furniture wiping glaze oil based (this is the new name of windsong II per dealer) I have decided not to cerise my cabinets- Wes does a great job but has a controlled environment to work in. I would post photos but don’t know how in a comment

I discovered your videos on cerusing and just finished a test cabinet door. I love it! Your videos are awesome and you are an excellent teacher and do beautiful work. Now I am going to tackle my golden oak kitchen which has 12 tall cabinets, 14 normal sized cabinets, and 10 drawer faces. I did my test with a wire brush and some wire wheels that fit on my drill. I saw your video using the Mikita tool. It's a little pricey for me but I am looking at the Restorer and the Craftsman versions of this tool. My question is: what type of wheels did you use? And what grit? I see both stainless steel and nylon. And several different grits.
@WoodworkingWithWes
@WoodworkingWithWes 2 года назад
Hi...I used the nylon wheel that came with the Mikita Wheel Sander but it did not indicate a grit rating. I assume it was a medium grit. Good luck...I know you will do great!! Wes

Thank you for being so detailed in your explanations. ❤. WONDERING……that wheel brush sander is amazing. I’ve also watched videos where you just use a wire brush by hand. I’m thinking I didn’t get much wood grain in my first door because I wasn’t pressing hard enough with the wire brush. I mean I got grain but black glaze did not go in far. You must be pressing fairly hard on your wire brush correct?

Craftsman also makes something similar to the makita used here. It’s called the restorer. Got one at Lowe’s on sale weeks ago for like maybe $30. Think it’s usually $99 ish. The stainless wheel I’m thinking is 40-50 tho. Sanding drums aren’t much tho.

I'm looking at a Restorer but I'm not sure what grit of nylon wheel I should get. I see an 80 grit and a 180. I'm thinking the 80 is the way to go. P.S. I might never use this tool again so the lower price of the Restorer seems the best choice for me. Thanks.

Wes - you are truly a master woodworker! Can I create a ceruse look on a raw unpainted finish? Id like to refinish oak bookcases from dark oak stain to natural stain and then use a beige or ivory stain or glaze so the grain will be different. Would I follow the same procedure - just skipping the painting step? It would be like a limed oak finish. So I would strip the old finish off, sand, use a wire brush sand again then glaze the wood, wipe off and sand Then use a poly finish? Do everything you did on the ceruse finish but skipping the painting step?

The nylon wheel was rated medium and came with the Makita wheel sander. I removed only enough material to enhance the grain. Thank you for watching, Wes

Hi Wes! Wow looks amazing. I'm knee deep in a remodel right now and have been thinking about something similar for my old Honey Pine dinning room table. However, as you well know Pine is very soft, so what would you recommend for the wire brush prep?
@timhunt7830
@timhunt7830 3 года назад
I think u usually use an open grain wood like oak,ash,elm , hickory for the cerusing process. Not sure if u can do it on closed grain or not. But they make an abrasive nylon wheel, a few different styles and grits actually.

@@timhunt7830 Yeah, after I left that comment I took a hard look at the Pine's grain. I don't believe it will have the same effect. Thanks for the reply.

Hi Wes another great job as always.I have question i love that look and would like to try that on one of my projects i do so do you have to use a lacquer paint when doing this or could you use a latex paint.Thanks Wes
@WoodworkingWithWes
@WoodworkingWithWes 3 года назад
Hi David...I am not sure that you would receive a satisfactory glazing effect with a latex paint. The colored lacquer coat provides the necessary sealer finish for the glaze. I suggest doing a test sample before making your decision. Thanks for your continued support. Wes

@williamjackson1665 2 года назад
In my experience latex paints with sheens, semi-gloss or satin do not sand well. Rather the paint melts and rolls up in tiny little balls. You may be able to sand a flat latex or a tinted latex primer. Try a test board first.

I always thought u should spray the panel before assembly so that it doesn't expose raw unpainted wood when the panel shrinks in service... 🤔

Is there a top coat that won’t yellow over time? It shows especially on white or light grey cabinets. Would love to know this answer
