Lots of great new products at SHOT Show 2020. Not really. Lots of new items... new colors... new modifications; but nothing really new that really makes me wish hard that I had it back "in the day" of combat operations (I retired years ago).
So, I have walked the floor of SHOT for days; hunting for the holy grail. I found lots of great stuff, and visited with LOTS of great people. What really caught my eye? New laser targeting system? No. New flux capacitor? No. New plasma rifle with 20 kilowatt range? Nope.
I remember many a deployment in hot environments, watching guys putting ice cubes in their camelbaks; putting small bottles of water inside their pockets under their armor; and pouring ice water to saturate the sponge pads in their helmets... all just to keep their bodies cooler in combat. I say cooler, because you never got "cool." We experimented with coolant vests under armor, that you plugged in the system in the HMMWVee. Never worked well.
I remember one of the SF instructors at SFAS (Special Forces Selection Course), as the helicopter took off, saying for us to "drink more water, because the Soldier on that bird had a core temp of 105, and he is not coming back ever." Being a heat casualty weakens your body forever. You are never going to fully recover.
My job as a leader in Special Ops was easy: 1. Accomplish the Mission. 2. Care and welfare of the troops. So, as you watch this video and thing this is a "trivial cooler for body armor"; I want you to think of it through my eyes... where I NEVER, EVER, wanted to lose a Soldier, Friend, Family Member, Brother to enemy fire or natural event. Keep your troops comfortable, healthy, and safe; and you'll have a unit that will win the day.
Strength and Honor, TR.

Garand Thumb showcased the iceplates a couple years back, he seemed really impressed with the design back then and it looks like they've really improved it over the version he used. Kinda a longshot considering how the DoD operates but hopefully we'll see them as standard issue gear in the future; it's a really good idea and deserves all the exposure they can get.

Thank you! We listen to all of our end-users and hear the calls/cries of Joe and Jane to get our tech into the DoD pipe. We are chipping away at them, but we've run into lots of resistance from the middle management types who don't think Joe and Jane need our tech. We had a retired O-6 (who is now a DoD civilian) on the Medical/Training side of things for the Army (we are omitting his name intentionally) tell us: "Heat casualties are not a problem for the Army or really the entire U.S. Military. We have no need for your technology."

I was impressed that the rep actually knew his product. Too many Shot Show vids with reps that can't answer basic questions. I'm really loving the concept of this. Another usage is Joe's could use those during a change of command to stay cool in the deep south when all the commanders want to tell you their life story😂

Frankie Bruan Prop blast no problem. Stand under a couple of Chinooks and get some softball size stones in back. Ambient and latent heat on tarmac what is rough. Get orders to be on line at 06:00. With delays and other military stuff you may still be there 18:00 waiting. Food, casualties, meds, etc take precedence and you can get bumped back. Anything that can help alleviate is worth hearing out.

The kids today forget that in many wars attrition was the main killer. US Civil War being an easy example of two men dying from disease and elements for every man killed from combat. Better kit and medicine helped Europe to conquer the jungles and distant lands of the globe more than the rifle did, compare WW2 to Vietnam to see the kinds or progress that were made years ago to save lives of men in the field in terms of things like malaria. It ain't all shiny new toys and weapons components that matter. Some guy was bit in Afghanistan and didn't get a rabies shot, came home to become a casualty because he didn't take care of his injury. You read about some of these careless casualties here and there, and it is good to see improvements still being made towards safety and well being. Glad you found this product, and thanks for making these.

Karl, you mention “heat” issues. Man, I can vouch for that crap. You NEVER recover...certainly NOT fully. I had a BACK injury while we lived in Montana, back in ‘07. Dealt with it for the remainder of our time there, until FAMILY ‘told’ us to “get back to Texas”. I thought it was the RIGHT move, literally. We sold the log home of our dreams we’d built in 2000, moved back to Central Texas and almost immediately had heat ‘exhaustion’. Happened 3 years IN A ROW! Obviously in the middle of summer; I never could get my body to REadjust to the heat down here. That saying, “IF it ever happens, it’ll get ‘easier’, or worse EACH time. No kidding, absolute truth. I’ve always got to watch myself whenever summer comes around, which, we ALL know..summer’s always here in Texas. Man I MISS Montana...

22 years as a 91/18 series medic, I can say that environmental injuries, hot or cold, was without a doubt the single most common life threatening injuries I have ever treated. yea you get one, heat stroke or hypothermia, not only do you never fully recover, but it is also cumulative. in other words if you get either or again, it will be worse and more likely to be fatal. that is why they are career ending in the military. so yea I'm right there with you Karl, where were these guys 20 + years ago? I guess the one question I have Karl, is where do you put your ballistic plates? putting ballistic plates over top would seem to be the right way or are those plates stand alone ballistic protection as well? if so what level?

This is a great design. Efficient and effective. Not only in the desert but in a hot vehicle. I was a heat casualty at NTC driving a 1068 around the mohave. That hatch is HORRIBLE.. the engine is at your right hidden by one thin ass panel. I got COOKED. If I had these... hell I could have kept a ton extra in a freezer ON BOARD and swapped out when needed. I'm getting a dozen when they are available. The workers vest is awesome too. Most of these guys are outside in direct sunlight... think of all the lives they'll save and injuries they'll prevent from this simple yet INCREDIBLE design. WELL DONE! Thanks for the show Carl.

Great idea. I have seen a similar product in the past but no where near as good since it used blue ice. It was a flexible vest which you froze and was used for a medical condition where the patient was unable to regulate their own body heat. Back then I thought it would be a great idea to place under a plate carrier. Of course you can not drink blue ice and it would be added weight since you would have still needed to take separate water.

I’m glad you found them to share the product with more people! I picked one up for civilian use in my backpack a couple weeks ago. -So far it’s mostly perfect for my uses, but since I only have one I haven’t been able to put it through some of the physical training challenges I’d like to. I have noticed that the ice plate will remain deformed inward if there is no air let back in after suction, am not sure but could imagine it becoming more permanent if allowed to be left that way. Also, I electrical taped a section of the bite valve because somehow I’d pulled it free from the tube. Other than that, it’s been great, and actually adds comfort to my backpack while adding some weight for training and the obvious hydration.

Have they considered making a water bladder shaped like a plate? Maybe put some baffles/a lattice inside so it maintains its shape.
@QorePerformanceUSA
@QorePerformanceUSA 4 года назад
Yes, we've looked at soft bladders, but we intentionally went hard cell for a few reasons, namely strength and shape consistency when freezing. To get a soft bladder to freeze in the shape of a Medium ESAPI plate consistently (to make it easy to wear with armor), a mold would be required which would add complexity and cost to the user experience. Pretty sure they don't kick you out of the army entirely if you get a heat injury during any kind of training. I had a friend who went through RASP at Fort Benning, and he said that people who would have heat injuries weren't kicked out of the course but they were recycled or sometimes sent home till they healed and were allowed to try again if their recovery took too long. As long as they didn't voluntarily give up, they were able to put in another Ranger selection packet and go back to try RASP again. If you voluntarily gave up you burned that bridge to ranger battalion forever. The army knows full and well that it's awfully hard to prevent a heat injury when you're running 8-9 miles in 102 degree heat with 90% humidity after quickly fireman carrying a 220lb soldier up and down cardiac hill. I didn't go through this process myself, but from what he told me it seems like heat injuries are preventable to a certain degree, but if it's almost 100% humidity and hotter than hell you're going to have a hard time not passing out from that heat. I mean, Benning has a damn heat injury center to study and prevent heat injuries because they were seeing them so often and it was costing them millions. Now, if you had these plates in a carrier during those runs or training you might not have as many heat injuries and you might help soldiers become stronger and run for longer. This could be very beneficial to the army or any service branch because it would severely reduce costs associated with time lost recovering from a heat injury, and from training having to be repeated if you get recycled or cycled out to go home and recover.

I think this is a game changer on many levels! One of the best inventions to come out in a long time. But I have a question; when a warrior gets hit in the body armor the energy is dramatic and can break bones but at least they won’t leak. But the energy that hits the plate then adds a “hydro shock” effect because of the energy from the bullet causing the water in the container to add additional energy. Does that increase the potential damage to the user? Has this been measured and eliminated?
@TacticalRifleman
@TacticalRifleman 4 года назад
The threat from hydro shock wave isn’t from bullets hitting. Rather, it is from the over-pressure shock wave of a near explosive blast. This shockwave actually speeds up when it hits the fluid of the body. Fortunately, these waves slow down very quickly. A block of C4 ( with no shrapnel) would kill you at 4 feet, but not at 15 feet. You still get your bell rung, but it is the shrapnel that kills at distance. Also, most near blasts are often low... think stepping on mine or grenade thrown at feet, this shock wave is mostly missing the plate
@jamesswain100
@jamesswain100 4 года назад
Thanks Karl that explains a lot. I plan on buying several sets of these because I’ve see the benefits for cooling down or warming up in the back country. The question was geared for warriors and how it could take a round. Thanks for showing us one of the new things at SHOT SHOW! Take care brother

@@jamesswain100 Thanks for the great question! Water is actually the best possible medium for dealing with the incredible amount of energy that comes from an impacting round. A whole lot of careful thought and study went into that product. Never was fallout hot in Afghanistan but Iraq was a totally different story. I’m a Texan so 110 was no fun but certainly not unheard of. 120+ is a whole different ball game. In 05/06 Iraq all we ever got was liter and a half bottles. Freeze them every night but inconvenient and normally only half was used and it was too hot and it was thrown away. I got a couple of dozen blue plastic cooler freezers and also some plastic bags and we would freeze them and put them in your pockets but they never lasted more than say 45 minutes at best. The government needs to throw down on this instead of the worthless shit they waste our money on. Sitting on tarmac at BGW, Talil, Balad waiting for hours worse than being attacked. As those water plates get drank they will make noise just like a canteen which is what they are. Your redesign needs to be more like a bladder to solve the noise issue and it needs to include a gasmask attachment so we can drink when we have it on.
@TacticalRifleman
@TacticalRifleman 4 года назад
The gas mask attachment can be added by any Joe, as the tube is a standard size. However, having it standard would just add unneeded cost to everyone else that doesn’t need the gas mask feature. As for bladders, I disagree with you there; I have had too many camelbacks pop over the years. As thin as the plate is, it shouldn’t make the “Bell” sound that the sloshing canteen makes
