More than a million public sector workers could soon be asked if they want to go on strike over pay.
Numerous ballots have already begun, prompting questions about whether a winter of industrial action is on the horizon.
In this special report, Sky's Nick Martin meets a nurse, a teacher and a firefighter to hear their cases on why they should get an increase in pay.

"We need to see what's affordable for the tax payer." - Just start by getting back the 37 billion wasted on a test and trace app that never worked, so the contract was not fulfilled and the money should come back, exactly like the billions wasted on PPE that either never arrived or wasn't fit for purpose when it finally arrived.

I love when government top officials are trying to persuade us they can't afford to help out as it their opinion it would just cost too much money. When it comes to wasting billions of pounds on something government believed it was the good but it turns out completely useless. when they were transferring huge amounts of money in form of business contracts to their peers it was alright. They pretended it never happened and when they were pushed hard enough they hid behind lame excuses. I think this is the time people need to get very vocal about it and if needs take to the streets. Enough is enough.

Test & trace! Where they paid £6K per day to each of an army of 'consultants' who did absolutely nothing. Yes! Get that money back! Plus scrap HS2 (£100Billion) as it's only the rich who will be able to pay those crazy fares. Then the deficit will look much better & then more help for the poorest is feasible.

"Rich" people don't just keep their money in the bank. Elon Musk "worth" 200 billion, simply in shares of Tesla. Tesla employs 100,000 people. He can't even sell it all if he wanted to , as that would drive the share price lower, and he would end up with 50-60 billions at most. then he would need to pay taxes on it, and he is really left with "only" 20 billion. So yes, its better for everyone for him to keep that money in business.

Mick Lynch came across as someone with real strength of character, calm, collected, and articulate. I don't know how he kept his composure. I've signed up to Enough Is Enough, and just stopped watching any MSM, including BBC. To see the way this man who clearly has a sense of dignity and integrity as a human being, was shouted and screamed at, constantly interrupted, by idiots literally foaming at the mouths, was truely disgusting. They've rigged all neoliberal economies, democracies, governments and media in their favour and are slowly sucking the wealth from our nations and putting it into their off shore havens. The free market no longer exists because of neoliberalism, corporations and Wall-Street dont play by the same ruled the rest of us have to abide by. Remember 2008? WALL-STREET got bailed out via our tax money and regular people were left to fail and lose their homes. This is why the mega corps are monopolising the market, because they enjoy corporate socialism, whilst the rest of us have to suffer through late stage capitalism. When they fail they get help. I would love to know what shakes and how to make them that Kate uses that I can make from time to time especially when food is low at home and can't make shops due to bad weather. Kate should be getting a better pay because not only as a nurse but nurses duties have also doubled in tasks expected of them. I was not for nurses looking for pay rises before but in the last number of years nurses have to play more intensive roles with more and more work load thrown upon them and less staff to assist they are very deserving of a pay rise and they should be recognised and commended for the challenging role they play. Firefighters and other emergency services are a necessity and deserving of their recognition and should also get a pay rise. The gov should put a price cap on shops, fuel and energy suppliers in their unnecessary price rises and extortion from customers. Price hikes are necessary but not to the point of extortion. Just look at how much these people make over and above the costs these energy and shops should be taking some of the hits as well as customers

I would suggest a compromise of moderate wage increases of say 4-5% and a one time top up payment of an additional 5% to get people through the crisis. If this continues into next year, a similar arrangement might be required. To me this makes sense as companies and taxpayer are not on the hook for massive pay increases that they will have to bring forward permanently but keeps people from falling into real term poverty. The government needs to address all of causes of inflation and recent reports suggest 65% of it is from corporate price increases and massive profits. Companies are taking advantage of the inflation and increasing their prices well above inflation for massive profits. Instead of expect the general populace to take it on the chin yet again, what are they do to reign in this massive price gouging by companies?

Why on earth did the woman with the ring call out the fire brigade? When I worked in a jewellers we removed rings like this often. Waste of public money calling out the emergency service for such a pathetic reason. Symptomatic of the weak kneed behaviour of many these days.

That first nurse doesnt have a money problem when it comes to her food, its working too many hours for their current pay. Basicly the answer isnt more money its less hours for the same money and of course more would be nice. She needs more time to cook for herself and learn new healthy cheap recipes.

ITS NOT JUST THE PUBLIC SECTOR THAT IS STRUGGLING

The public sector has always had it better - many more sick days, longer holidays, better redundancy package, employer never go's out of business & gold plated pensions! Not to mention never doing your job properly!!!!!

@@philipjohnkaye8890 It's only funny for the public sector! The private sector has to work hard & efficiently for their salary & can't go striking for higher pay because there'd be no job to go back to. Damn the lazy public sector! Million pound a year barristers are on strike! Get real!

Teachers, firefighters and healthcare workers, absolutely! Rail workers…hmmm, I lived in the uk for years and have some very unpleasant memories of those entitled and arrogant jobsworths. Some of the most breathtaking acts of unprofessional behavior I’ve ever seen.

The special needs teacher has an expensive house, if £35,000 isn't enough to survive, pay less with a smaller house. I'm living on an apprenticeship wage of £12k a year, I don't know how people who earn £35,000+ are struggling, they must have lots of bad debts from bad spending habits.

Brutal! Here in Ontario, nurses, teachers, police and firefighters make a very good wage. These are occupations that should be paid well.
