If you appreciate quartz and its associated geology, this is the segment of the 16 to 1 Mine for you… I have never seen quartz like this in any other mine that I have ever explored anywhere in the world. “Ballroom” is literal here too at the Sixteen to One, as aside from this massive section of quartz being the size of a large ballroom, the mine really did host dances and weddings underground here. In case you missed it in the video, the dance floor is currently covered up with a large amount of waste rock. So, if you can imagine it, this ballroom of quartz was even larger in the past! It would be a hell of a job, but wouldn’t it be something to see that forty feet of waste rock hauled out to open things up to the level of the dance floor?
Something that regrettably doesn’t come across so well on the screen you’re watching, given the lack of points of reference for scale, is that that quartz chamber is running off for hundreds of feet in all directions… Then, the stopes dropping off from the main ballroom chamber angle down for hundreds of feet as well to the drift levels we explored earlier. The “ballroom trail” that we climbed up was really just a stope that we followed up to the main ballroom chamber.
The work involved in getting this massive space carved out of the quartz and then getting all of that ore and waste rock (mostly ore) out is hard to imagine. I think it would be very interesting to see production figures specifically for this part of the mine in order to know how much gold was taken out of just the ballroom. In other words, I wonder if it was high grade material with rich pockets of gold or if they milled all of it down?
What the old timers did here is really incredible to me and I can only imagine what they thought as they were working their way through what must have seemed like an endless amount of quartz.

Another video of mine from a few years ago that covers the ballroom is referenced in this video… If you’d like to see a different visit to the mine and another perspective on the ballroom, that video can be found here: • Exploring Active Mines...
Our guide on this tour, Duane, has a RU-vid channel of his own in which he has posted videos he has taken in mines where he has worked. It can be found here: / @muleskinnermining8661
For more information on the Sixteen to One Mine or even to buy physical gold or stock shares from the company, one can visit their website at: www.origsix.com/

All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really makes a difference.

*****
Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them - nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand - bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born.
So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

Having been someone who has done some spelunking in their younger days and marveled at the Majesty of Mother Nature in the depths of the Earth, and now I have gotten to look at this video and too realize that all the spaces that I see are not natural Caverns but mined out by the hands of man, is a whole different level of Awesome! Thanks Justin, this is a cool series.

Here's pure geology on the 16 to 1 mine "Geology of The Sixteen to One Mine Geologic research in the fields of thermodynamics, geochemistry and plate tectonics during the past 20 years has greatly improved our understanding of crustal evolution and the distribution of metals in the earth's crust. Throughout the world in Canada, Africa and Australia, major gold deposits are found within a suite of rocks referred to as greenstones. The name greenstone refers to the color of the rock acquired during metamorphism: greenschist facies metamorphism. The Mother Lode and Alleghany mining districts also lie within a greenstone belt that contains world-class gold deposits, one of which is the Sixteen to One vein system with production of more than 31 metric tons of gold.Our understanding of how this deposit formed has been evolving for over 85 years. A process called carbonate metasomatism formed ribbon quartz veins along en echelon faults that are secondary to the crustal suture known as the Melones fault. These secondary veins (the Sixteen to One), formed by replacement as aqueous fluids ascending through cracks in the earth's crust, removed accessory cations from wall rock minerals. The Melones fault is the remnant of a compressive or transpressional environment common to convergent plate margins. This fault marks the boundary along which oceanic crustal rock is emplaced against the continent. The fracture system along which the quartz veins formed is an expression of the forces and motion along the crustal suture. The Alleghany fracture system originates at the Melones fault which is the conduit for the large volume of fluid that formed the vein system. The volume of fluid can be calculated with reasonable accuracy because the fluid composition is known from fluid inclusion chemistry. The volume of the end product, which is quartz, is known from mining. Fluid chemistry assures us that there is vein continuity to the depth of the Melones fault. To evaluate the model extending the Sixteen to One ore chute at its recorded rake to the junction with the Melones fault, we compare pressure/temperature boundary conditions to a model developed during 20 years of thermodynamic research. The model states that gold precipitation occurs at 300-500 degrees C. and 1-3 kb. Fluid inclusion studies conducted on vein quartz from the Alleghany district indicate formation temperatures that lie within the above boundaries. Sensitivity of the system to the temperature gradient along the fluid path is simpler and more predictable than its sensitivity to the pressure gradient which is responsive to block motion in addition to depth. Considering Ferguson and Gannett's estimate of a two mile thickness of pre-Cretaceous overburden, the 2600 foot level is at 1 kb (PL). Sinking another 3,200 feet vertically to the Melones fault would only add another 0.25 kb to the boundary conditions. Another 23,000 feet of overburden could be added before reaching the 3 kb limit. Projecting the rake of the Sixteen to One pay chute to the Melones fault indicates a distance as great as 12,600 feet. Presently the Sixteen to One gold deposit has been mined to a depth of 3,000 feet with production of more than a million ounces of gold. At a production rate of one million ounces per 3,000 feet, the potential exists for the production of several million ounces before the system dives steeply into the Melones fault."

If memory serves, and it is kinda fuzzy, I think I heard that gold precipitates out of the solution at the wall because that's where the thermal fluid starts cooling first. Quartz starts as a thermal fluid under intense heat and pressure. So everything you're looking at was once unimaginably hot and fluid. Heh. Trying to imagine that while watching, yeah..
@dumpbear0
@dumpbear0 5 лет назад
If my memory serves me right it also has an affinity for carbon. So if the host rock is high in carbon like some of the shale that is near me you will find higher concentrations of gold at those points of contact where the hydrothermal fluid cools.

Hi, so awesome to have a ballroom below ground, make as much noise as you want no-one will hear you. Ok so the Ballroom was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. As a 25 year above ground limestone miner I have to snicker every time he is referring to MSHA. I’m a miners rep when they visit us and most of the inspectors are decent but some of them are too philosophical with the interpretation of the book and broad with the pen on citations. Also is there a reclamation clause in their mining agreement or will everything just stay when the mine closes? So cool stuff down there

Well here we go , ole BG is at it again . First off , another great video and the quartz is amazing !! Now the Ballroom . He said they dug it out around the 30's , but when was it used as a Ballroom ? There must be some awesome pictures of it in use . Who went to it , the people who worked there with their wives & GF's !? How long was it operational ? Ballroom stairs ending at the 1000 and starting at the 800 . So did women walk to the stairs in the 800 or ride the rail to the stairs ? Also , 200 ft of stairs up would be a workout . I'm talking sober, fired up must have been quite the deal at closing time :D For me , I'd LOVE to see some pictures of that BR in use !!! Great series , great mine, and great editing and narration !! Wow !!! Holy Jumping Up And Down Martha !!! Quartz by the megaton. This is a great video !! Are the dark veins in the quartz a silver ore, or is it mainly iron based like magnetite? Great explanation of mucking with the slusher. I've found the old timers worked the hanging wall and the foot wall as most of the gold was found nearest to the boundry layer. It was always easiest to work from the back down unless the matrix (native rock) was frangible or easily fractured, and the quartz layer had greater mechanical strength. Totally Rad Ballroom - wish it weren't backfilled.
@TVRExploring

Yes that was a big operation. Grass valley was built from the hygrade . There was lots of mines around Grass valley. I use to work in a few of them. The one you showed out side of Casa grande that was a open pit mine. I believe that was ran by hecla in the 70s I worked there underground 500 level and some times 200 and 100. My tombstone brass 3812. Hard to believe I still remember it.

You can also try to get into the Kenton mine down Foots Crossing Rd across Kanaka Creek at the entrance level not to far in side is a big quartz room also.

@@TVRExploring It was about 20 years ago. I think the owner of the Oriental Mine has the mineral rights which sits between 16 to 1 and the Kenton It looks like someone is working the mine now I looked on Google Earth and saw some new structures that were built across the creek to the stamp mill and yes there is a very large stamp mill still there. I'll be happy to answer more questions if you have them. BTW Miller should know whats going on with the Kenton.

Yes, I asked because it is my understanding that the mine is under new ownership. I've tried to connect with the owner through mutual acquaintances, but have been unsuccessful so far.

@@Rambogner - I've used a Davy Lamp and the light produced is omni-directional for about 2 feet with no way to produce a focused beam of light . The Primary purpose of a Davy Lamp is to detect Flammable or Explosive Atmospheres and/or Low Oxygen Atmospheres . For the 'old school feel' you'd want to use a Calcium Carbide Miners Lamp . < Doc - Miner for over 50 years > .

I've been meaning to do a video showing off all of the different lights over the years. In other words, picking some stope or whatever and then showing how lit up it is with a candle, then a carbide lantern, etc. up to a modern LED.
