Specialized Nailed the 27.5+ Hardtail - 2020 Specialized Fuse All New Feature Review & Actual Weight

I think specialized nailed the new 2020 Specialized Fuse. This thing is pretty smack on for the price and it seems to have done it without cutting any corners. The frame is really nice, the fork is air with hydraulic damping, and finally, the stock wheels and tires are actually good!

Info from Specialized:
Here’s proof you don’t need tons of suspension travel to tackle challenging trails. Equipped with an all-new, longer, lower and rowdier chassis, we’ve added 27.5x2.8 wheels and tires to the Fuse 27.5 to create a bike that lets you hit rocks and roots at speed with absolute control.
ROWDY BY DESIGN
The Fuse is loaded with smart touches. The wide-diameter down tube boosts stiffness. The low-slung top tube improves maneuverability on tight trails. And while this Fuse’s 27.5x2.8 tires give it tons of traction and stability, it’s also compatible with 29er wheels and tires.
PERFECTLY DIALED
Fail to nail the geometry and advanced designs will still amount to nothing on the trail. Fuse gets it right. The long reach gives you even weight distribution. The slack head angle lends confidence on sketchy descents. The steep seat angle makes quick work of steep climbs.
SMART PARTS PICK
• Plus-size tires provide insane traction and stability on the choppiest trails.
• 130-millimeters of suspension courtesy of a RockShox Judy Silver TK fork.
• Highlights include hydraulic disc brakes, a dropper post, and single-ring drivetrain.
130-millimeters of suspension courtesy of a RockShox Judy Silver TK fork.
Highlights include hydraulic disc brakes, a dropper post, and single-ring drivetrain.
Shimano single-ring drivetrain brings simple and reliable shifting to an affordable price point.
Plus-size tires provide insane traction and stability on the choppiest trails.
New Butcher GRID TRAIL offers improved cornering grip.
TranzX dropper post increases the Fuse's maneuverability on steep descents.

Nice bike. I like the frame design/geo, and the thru axle on the rear hub. Shame they used such lower spec components compared to the Roscoe. If Trek just listened to customers and upgraded the Roscoe to have a standard size rear thru axle and 1 degree slacker HT angle then the Roscoe would be the perfect aggressive hardtail.

Seems to be loads of these left in the UK!!!! Main selling point is those plus tyres especially on a hardtail. Plus seems to be viewed as a fad by a lot of riders but in dry conditions the comfort and grip is amazing. I swap plus 3.0 fast rolling tread for the dry to sort of plus 2.6 (lol) aggressive tread for the wet. 👍

Love the review and it swayed me from the Roscoe. Thankfully my local shop had a flat green one in stock in my size cause I couldn’t stand the red. Only complaint and it’s very minor is the brakes are the weak link here. I’m a heavier rider so I need the added bite.

I bought the 2020 Trek Roscoe 7....the components are very similar(Sram Rockshox Judy, Boost spacing front n' rear) but the 3 piece Stout crankset and Stout rims (I owned a Specialized Rockhopper Pro and it had Stout everything, components wise) I found they weren't very high quality. The Roscoe comes specce'd with a FSA Gramma Pro crankset with external BB and Bontrager Line Pro40 rims. The dropper post is the same nothing special. Interesting how my Trek and ur Specialized compare, happy Riding!

Nice, congrats on your purchase. I reviewed the Roscoe 6/7/8 of the 2019 version but none of 2020 yet. Stout is like a brand name of the in-house Specialized parts. Say Bontrager makes everything from cheap to Gucci. So I'm not sure the Stout branded parts on this bike are the same as what you had before. Either way, both the Roscoe and the Fuse are sick bikes!

Just brought me the 2019 rockhopper pro 1x after watching your vid on it many times over! I have to say if this came in a darker colour like black or blue I'd have prob gone with one of these! Like the 130mm travel on the forks and the fact they done away with the quick release on the wheels for this model over the rock hopper. Saying that I do like my new bike and I had the very last one available here in the u.k in size XL so they must have sold quite well. @mitchellconant9336

Hello Sarah! If you are talking about the ChainReactionCycles deal, just be aware that those bikes have no factory warranties (Nothing covered by your local bike shop). CRC bought them from another company that went out of business even though they were supposed to go back to Marin. What kind of trails are you looking to ride? The Marin has a bit nicer of a drivetrain/brakes, but overall the Specialized is more appealing to me. (At least for me it is).

The crankset is not a 3 piece and the bottom bracket is externally threaded plus Bontrager makes higher quality rims than Stout plus all Roscoe's come spec'd with a couple FSA components. The only other component on the Specialized would be Stout. In my opinion the Trek is a slightly better choice

@@Jamesthebikeguy same with MRP Ribbon coil suspension, Air is better but coil just feels more linear. Both bikes have double walled rims, perhaps Stouts 40mm is a good quality rim. well... I own one, and the Shimano Deore on this bike is pretty crisp and easy to use and it is a clutch derailer, tho you do lose that kickass 11-50 range that the 12 speed has so climbing can be a chore, tho this bike is thru-axle rear and does have a good ol Shimano freehub body so you have upgrade options, I'll use this drivetrain till I can get either SRAM gx with an nx cassette or that new 11-50 9 speed joint that box components is coming out with for 200 bucks for a complete groupset.

@adaycj
@adaycj 5 лет назад
With a bad taste in my mouth from the 2016 Fuse I bought, I am skeptical. On the other hand some things have been sorted. The Judy is a massive upgrade over the failure prone Suntour fork, and it make the bike a better value because most riders at this price point don't want to end up spending 1/3 or more of the MSRP on a new fork "upgrade". On the other hand, the devil is in the details with Specialized. Oddball spoke counts, headsets that crumble into pieces in 200 miles, and ball and cone rear hubs are the legacy here. When the see the wheel and spoke nonsense, I get that queasy feeling. The queasy feeling like I'm buying a nice frame, and I'll replace nearly every part before I'm done. I'll give a huge thumbs up for a threaded BB though, that is nice and a lot less creaky I bet.
@Jamesthebikeguy
@Jamesthebikeguy 5 лет назад
Unfortunately, that's the world of beginner mountain bikes. They have to be cut in cost so when things get really beat up it doesn't make sense to fix the bike. In the case of spokes, that doesn't even matter because it's cheaper to buy a whole pre-built wheel than it is to have a LBS re-build with a new rim anyway.
@adaycj
@adaycj 5 лет назад
@@Jamesthebikeguy Jamesthebikeguy Yes, it's not the low end unreliable parts, although there is low end reliable stuff sometimes. It is Specialized's method of hiding junk pieces that aren't even sutible for the purpose in places you can't see at the time of purchase. A ball and cone 148mm mountain bike hub shouldn't exist, let alone be installed on a Specialized brand bike. Same thing with a pot metal headset that crumbles. I digress the, 2020 Fuse looks like an upgrade from the previous iterations, and at a better price point to boot. The Geo and construction of the frame were pretty dialed on the old version. For the price, with a decent RS fork you almost can't go wrong even if Specialized is still up to their rotten Easter egg hunt on lower end mountain bikes.

Hi James ive seen your two vids on two bikes and considering one of them, its the Trek Roscoe 8 or this bike from the vid the Spec Fuse. In your opinion which one as both seem not bad for speck and money wise. Other option is a Commencal meta am new one 2020 the entry level bike. Cheers

I have the 2019 Roscoe 8 and it’s very similar to the 2020 fuse. The fuse has a 10 speed Shimano Deore and the roscoe has a 12 speed SRAM NX Eagle. They both have the same fork but the fuse is set up with 10mm of extra travel.

For the money you save on this bike over the Roscoe, you could upgrade the drivetrain and crank and come out at the same price as the Roscoe 8

@Jamesthebikeguy

This is 27.5+ because of tire size. 2.8"-3.2" is 27.5+. That makes the outside diameter basically the same as a traditional 29er 2.1-2.4" tires.
