Specialized S-WORKS Ares shoe review: can a shoe make you sprint faster?

There was a time when it was very easy to understand the hierarchy of Specialized road shoes: S-Works was the top model, and that was that. The family has grown significantly in recent years, though, with the ultralight S-Works Exos aimed specifically at climbers, and the S-Works Vent targeting riders who struggle to keep their feet cool in hot weather. Both of these are in addition to the standard S-Works 7 model. Now, we have yet a fourth S-Works road variant - the S-Works Ares - designed specifically for sprinters.

Like the format of discussion. Nice job. Missed having the guest fly in this video though. Regarding the shoe, I would not choose this S-Works shoe over their other offerings though.

“These aren’t meant to be Pokémon, James. I don’t know if you’re meant to collect them all.” Says the guy with the massive tool collection. 🤣

Great review, I'm trying out these shoes at the moment and reason why I've choose them is what you mentioned at 10:05. I also have tailors bunion and my sworks6 were killing me. That stretchy material and design is a foot saver for me at the moment. On the other hand, I'm also really concern about durability. Not about the liner as you guys have mentioned but the heel and cushion. Each time I put them on (it ain't easy) I feel like I'm crushing/folding the material and can't see that holding for years... I'll try a shoehorn, it's a good idea, it might help! Love the confort but some big flaws in durability design I think. Time will tell...

can you give an update on the durability? that would be great

Hey@@Bonrad261! Still in my feet after +10000km. Did a 300km ride with no foot pain at all.. I've crash with them and the material held really well + it doesn't even show. No holes.. Not the easiest to clean but apart from the mesh being more grey than white now, they still look really good and fit is still really great. So, no complaint on durability at all. I had a lot of worries before buying especially about the slip-on design but all turns out for the best!

What you suggest woman shoes for endurance or climbing

Very disappointed with the fit my S-Works 7 shoes. The top boa dial is placed too high and the cuff of the shoe is far too highly cut around the instep, so they really dig into my tibialis anterior/ extensor hallusis longus tendons. I've never had this issue on the previous s-works 6 shoes, Or the old style Bont Vaypor's, Or even the Nike Lance 2 shoes I wore fourteen years ago...

Mavic comete 2, same same with a sock liner u Can change out, even with a winter bootie...
@elijahkwon422
@elijahkwon422 3 года назад
For the Sworks winter bootie, you need to buy a new specialised shoe which costs 400 dollars but is designed to be 1% warmer than competitors

Are these supposed to replace the S-Works 7 or are they just a different model?
@jameshuang4205
@jameshuang4205 3 года назад
Different model. The S-Works road shoe range is now just a lot bigger than it used to be. Whereas once you just had the "S-Works" road shoe -- and that was it -- now there's the S-Works 7, the S-Works Vent, the S-Works Exos, the S-Works Recon, and now this one, all meant to sit even with each other, but for different specialties.

The boa system is on my hunting boots. The system has survived extensive alterrian, extreme heat in the Sonoran desert, freeze on the east coast. A biker should do just fine.

I got size 46 in my Sidi. I am afraid I will look like a clown wearing these shoes in my size.. and tightening the front boa in the video I see the front wrinkle in an ugly way like the shoe is too wide. I find my Sidi quite uncomfy though, this looks like a comfy shoe

Yep, we mention the similarity in terms of concept to the Mavic Comete Ultimate (at least in the written review, can't remember about this video). These are very different in execution, though.

Ugly shoe. Big negative is the sock liner. You can see gaps between the socks. I’m going with shimano rc902

When are cycling companies going to start making cycling shoes that resemble the shape of the human foot, and making shoe / pedal systems that mimic the way humans actually generate power (like squatting barefoot). Being a layman, when I see a person perform a squat / lunge / deadlift, it looks like they are using the whole foot as a base to generate power, not the ball of their foot, that just about all cycling shoes feel like.

I'd say that Bont would already fit that description for you.
