The new Specialized Tarmac SL7 Comp uses SRAM’s latest Rival eTap AXS groupset to become the most affordable SL7 currently available, but does this entry-level model still offer the performance of the range-topping S-Works models that will be raced in the Tour de France? In this review I set out to find the answer

I have a sl7 expert. I put Roval C-38 wheels on it with 28mm tires. I got more comfort with wider tires and lower psi with tubeless. I agree with how fast it is. It practically begs to be ridden fast!

I can buy a 2021 sl7 expert with 10% off. I can switch the wheels from Roval C38 to zipp 404 firecrest. Its a cheaper wheel, should i change it or is the Roval way better? And do you also have mechanical ultegra? How does the mech ultegra hold up in sprints and races?

Good video, but like others I take exception with the comments on weight. 8.6kg inc pedals is something you'd notice every time you accelerate, stomp on the pedals, not just up mountains vs a 6.6kg rim tcr for same money not so long ago. The feel of a lighter bike is absolutely detectable and 2kg excess DOES blunt the feel. Wheels not aero, nor 30mm tyres, but ok that saddle is nice. Love the Power..😀

Got this exact same bike last month. Same size, same colour. It’s looks amazing in the sun. Upgraded wheels to Roval C38 with RapidAir 28mm tires set up tubeless. Have the Roval Rapide carbon aero bar on back order. Very happy with this bike so far. My mate rides the SWorks with Red eTap and Roval Alpinist wheels and for more than twice the price of my bike, it’s definitely not twice as good.

About bloody time too! We all know you been skiving off watching all the hype on the T de F!! 🤣😂😁👍🏻 Great review Dave, just what I was thinking about it. Its a great looking bike (except those wheels 🙄) I just think they could’ve come up with something better at this price point, say some better 40mm carbon wheels. Where as Trek have done that! The Emonda SL6 is fast, comfy and beats it on the spec. It’s a hundred grams heavier but as it’s cheaper so you’d have money left over to buy a few carbon bits and lose that and more. Can you review the Emonda?? 👍🏻 Thanks Dave. 😎👍🏻

I still think that it is mind boggling, that now days "progress" = heavier and more expensive bikes than their counter parts several years ago with the industry's stubborn refusal in denying customer's choice of rim or disc brakes as clearly a lot of people still wish for.

true, but to be fair aero trumps weight, even for many Sunday riders (like me). When you're not a pro you're more likely to prefer the flats and there again, aero trumps weight.

To be fair to them, people are not buying rim brake bikes, yeah they have fans but its a small proportion of their sales. Best we can hope for is that Shimano et al fix the issues with discs and bring the weight down.

4500 pounds for a nearly 9 kg heavy (with pedals and other bits and pieces) road bike, and people actually order it. That's the weight of a sub 1000 pound road bike from 10 years ago. Unbelievable how gullible some people can be. I can only wonder how further downhill can the cycling industry go. Whoever said some time ago that (road) cycling has become the new golf, they were right.

Thank you David for another excellent review, and a question: to what extent, do you think, the lesser comfort of the Tarmac compared to eg Filante or TCR could be down to the tires? Did it still feel less comfortable than those even when you road it on the Zipp 454s, with tubeless 28s and lower pressure? I'm in the process of deciding between Filante and SL7, to be ridden on the same crumbling Cotswolds road you ride on, so that's a critical consideration... PS Just seen your answer to the same question earlier - thanks, very helpful!

Then buy a secondhand old light bike, nobody will stop you. You guys always complain about the bike weight like you already have achieved 3% body fat. The modern bike heavier than the older one because it has disc brake, which is way way safer. It's a give and take here. DB bike is heavier but you can use it safely during rainy season, it's called compromise. RimBrake bike is way way lighter and cheaper yeah, but when you use it during rainy or winter season, you'll endanger yourself. I'm not a DB fan until my tarmac sl3 almost force me use a wheelchair for the rest of my life. If you said you won't cycle in winter or whatever, that's also a compromise right? DB system is more expensive than RB because it has more parts obviously. Frame wise, the weight will be almost the same, you won't see a 3 kg carbon bike frame just because it use DB. Specialized frame is expensive yeah, but maybe it's because they give you a lifetime warranty. I don't think bike frame industries have balls to do it 5 years ago.

If we used weight as the sole metric, it would seem I have gone backwards. However, I am significantly faster on the Tarmac. I would consider myself a decent rider - I held about 23.2mph over a 15 mile solo time trial over undulating roads. The same route I now hold 24.8mph for the same effort. 1.6mph faster may not seem much, but at my level it is very welcome and 2mins30secs faster over just a 15 mile distance is a huge deal.

Summing up I am a little disappointed about and the price is to much for what I am getting.

Frame with not so good compliance, aluminum stem/non-aero handlebar, another kilogram more due to the rather cheap group set I suppose, low-profile aluminum rims, and then 5000 eur? Does not sound like a good deal. Seems like ppl are willing to pay A LOT for the brand name. It almost seems to me you might even get a better, lighter and much cheaper bike if you take a really nice aluminum frame, and combine it with good carbon parts (seat stay, stem, handlebar, wheels) and a DI2.

Nice review, looking through the comments you can see that people buy bikes based on two things, parts lists and weight, comparing the weight of what was available 10 years ago is not the answer. Technology has moved on, its aerodynamics, material compliance, geometry. Going purely by weight and parts will get you a nicely speccd light bike, but not necessarily a fast one
@oxy02

Agreed. I understand the weight concerns, but a comparison on weight alone isn't truly comparing apples with apples

Not many bad bikes out there these days. I think this most people will upgrade the wheels within the first Year on the SL7 and with the big brands offering lower price points on their entry level carbon hoops why not. I think this particular bike will feel a lot more comfortable with a wider rim and 30mm tyre. The head tube is a bit long for me on the 56cm so not something I'll buy unfortunately.

This is insane! 5 grands for 8.6 kg bike AND you are yet left with upgrading your wheels. I am not sure what Specialized is thinking of. David, I know you would say Ultimate is aged, but I swear by its aero cockpit, truncated tubes, VCLS comfort seat post and DT P1800 wheelset; way better than these cheapish ones. It weighs 7.4Kg on S and you could get it for less than 3 grands! (well, £2400 last summer). That's the bike.

‘way better than’… nonsens. Have you ridden both? I have. Comparable sets and not very good. Canyon prices gone up aswell, and (were) hard to get. Aeroroad (2021 model) prices aren’t that much lower these days.. they all have their accountants. Ultimate will have a new model soon, with ofcourse higher prices. Hopefully without breaking bars…

Way way too heavy way way too expensive and it comes with disposable wheels. The bike industry is becoming a joke. I used to race on a Giant TCR Advanced SL which fully ready to ride weighed 14.5 pounds. Things are going backwards for more cash.

Specialized are now just taking advantage of people who want the brand name the 'all gear no idea' crowd. Even 15mins searching will show a wealth of better spec cheaper bikes from companies that are not just obsessed with profit. It is a shame to see. I'd go Ribble SLR disc Ultegra DI2 any day over this.
