What is the difference between a $10,000 USD superbike with the latest Shimano Electronic Groupset and 50mm carbon wheels and its younger brother with Shimano105 mechanical, and alloy wheels? A cheaper version, essentially.
The Specialized Tamac S-Works, the S-Works Venge, Allez Sprint and now the Tarmac Comp. I’ve ridden them all recently. Additionally, I have ridden the Cervelo S5, the Curve Cycling Belgie Air, the Giant Defy, the Trek Madone, and of course my current Chapter2.
Having the opportunity to test ride so many road bikes, I thought I would put together a video specifically relating to what an extra $7,500 USD actually buys a cyclist.
Now the problem with comparing a number of road bikes, is that either have different materials - such as titanium, steel, carbon fibre, aluminium - and many have different geometries so suit different riding styles.
That is why for this review, I am comparing two bikes from the same family. We will discuss:
Framesets, with a focus of the tarmac S-Works 12r VS the Sport 9r
Wheels, with a focus on the Roval CLX 50s vs the DT Swiss wheels
Groupsets , with a force on Shimano Electronic Dura-Ace VS Shimano 105 mechanical
I will touch on riding experiences, such as sprinting, climbing, bunch riding, criterium racing and general riding withfriends.
Cycling the length of New Zealand: • Cycling the length of ...

105 Vs Dura Ace Vs Ultegra: • Shimano 105 VS. Ultegr...
#roadbike #comparison #cycling
Weight formula: NOT INCLUDED -(I took out a 56cm with Ultegra, not 105. I did have my pedals on the bike when we weighed it, but if I subtract 220 grams for that and compare it to a 56cm Tarmac S-Works at 6.69 kgs
It was 8.34 kgs (less 220 grams) for pedals we have: 8.12 kgs vs a 56cm Tarmac S-Works complete bike one frame size up at 6.69 kgs - the difference is 1.43 kgs or 3.1 pounds.)

ROAD BIKE GIVEAWAY - Please note that there will be more information to follow. Please also consider you will need to have your RU-vid profile listed as ‘public’ at least one week before the draw on the 18th of December. Otherwise, your profile name will not appear on the list I extract from RU-vid to facilitate the draw. Many thanks, Cam

As a materials engineer specialized in composites, I can tell you that the difference between the two frames is maximum 10% cost (including using some higher modulus fiber which enables the drop in weight, but remember that the cost of the 1Kg of resin and carbon fiber that go into a bicycle frame is below $50, the rest is labor, marketing costs and margin) and 90% extra margin. The higher end frame has to pay for R&D costs for the next generation and sponsorship of the pros. It is fair that the pro sponsorship is paid by the people that want to say they have the same bike as the pros, makes sense... For instance, once you made the new mold, the cost difference between the round post and the D shape is zilch...

I think it's of critical importance to note that when we're talking about an "A" material+tech frame compared to a ""B" material+tech frame, for the same bike from the same manufacturer, we're probably talking about a $1K v's $3K difference (frame as a component of the entire bike) on a $2.5K v's $10K bike. From factory to shop floor the transport costs won't vary, so all of the difference sits in the profit margins for wholesale and retail. Volume sold of the high ticket framed bikes will be far less than the cheaper bike .. so the big cost component run over the smaller batch of high end frames is most definitely the R&D element spread over fewer bikes. No surprise that a small carbon fibre component on an F1 car is work $5K when they only make a few dozen by hand in a year! From a marketing perspective, the promoting of the high end bikes promotes the brand and sells the "lesser bikes" that to all intents probably perform within 2~3% of the high end bikes.If anyone is going to feel ripped off because of a small difference in base material costs it would come as a shock to think that a Kia's and a Ferrari's "raw" material costs wouldn't vary greatly ;)

@Mark - @Cam Nicholls This was the part that I was most interested in. The "Closing the Gap" part. Not everyone, as you said, has $10,000 to throw at a bike. We all know that you pay more for the better materials, geometry and intricate tuning/R&D BUT, if you were looking for a bike that you could upgrade in the future, where would you start and what component would you swap out... And I appreciate that answer at the tail end, instead of leaving us in the penny pincher section, idolizing a bike that we could never get. 🤣🤣🤣 Yes, the S-Works frame is lighter and stronger, but it also cost $5000! That's more than a Sprint Disc complete bike! Surely there is a better way to upgrade your bike and be more cost effective also. So I definitely agree that the wheels are the best way forward and maybe lighten up other components as you go. Plus you can likely take your upgraded wheels to another bike later on. Then maybe, you might be looking in a groupset change next. Either way, great video and great information.

I'm kicking myself for not taking a serious look at the Tarmac when I most recently updated my road weaponry. Most recently I picked up an S-Works Stumpjumper and as a result of that I feel I may have been happier on a Tarmac than an TCR (I've simply given up on Euro exotica). I think the crazy bird's nest of cables on the TCR is half the reason I'm now researching something aero :) ... I'm curious Imran - how "close to aero" do you feel your Tarmac is?
@indonesiaamerica7050
@indonesiaamerica7050 5 лет назад
@@kevinpunter7960 The TCR is just fine. If you can't get a good fit on the Tarmac the TCR is a fine alternative and a better price. If it fits you shouldn't be regretting it.
@kevinpunter7960
@kevinpunter7960 5 лет назад
@@indonesiaamerica7050more "opportunity missed" I suppose, as a pure race bike the TCR isn't bad at all. Only Giant I've regretted recently is my Revolt gravel bike .. but that's because of the groupset (Apex), the frame is really nice. I'd swap the groupset in a heartbeat, but I'm waiting to see how the new Shimano Gravel groupsets fair.
@indonesiaamerica7050
@indonesiaamerica7050 5 лет назад
@@kevinpunter7960 The only thing you might want to look at is the wheel width if you want more comfort assuming you've already optimized tire pressure for your conditions. Otherwise the TCR frame itself performs very much like a Tarmac but at a better price for any given model. I'm shopping for either a TCR or a Tarmac (my first choice is an Izalco Max 9-series but I can't find a 56 in stock) right now. The only thing I prefer on the Tarmac bikes as sold ("complete") are the wheels. If I can find ANY TCR disc in stock I will buy that instead. And then I'll probably buy the Roval wheels that come with the Tarmac Expert (because I found them in stock) or if I find a TCR with decent carbon wheels I'll try them out for a while and see if I need the wider inner width. On training rides I drop the tire pressure down to 90 or even 85 psi on the rear. The wider the inner rim width the higher the static pressure can be while achieving the same "comfort" results. The Roval C38's rims are 21mm wide inside. That's a massive advantage if you're trying to dial in comfort without compromising performance. Giant, OTOH, is smarter about offering asymmetric pairs (deeper rear rim) on some models but they're behind on inner rim width. Maybe according to their marketing data they don't need wider because most of their buyers are a lot lighter? I don't get it. It seems to me like 19mm is a good compromise for deep V rims.
@bluemystic7501

It's straight up ignorance to say 'it's all about the rider'. Deeper wheels will make you faster. Aero bits on the bike will make you faster. Areo kit will make you faster. A few less pounds on the bike will make you climb faster. All these things do add up over hours and hours of riding. This is a game of energy conservation.

Weight difference is huge and noticeable but sometimes I throw the tubulars on the SL4 and it weighs 7.2kg, rides like a dream and looks every bit as badass as the S-Works. So much so that I came close to selling the SL6.

If you are on a budget and you want new get the Specialized and if you want top end go 2-3 years old second hand and u will get a full Dura-Ace with top end zips or equivalent wheels tarmac pro barely used from first owner accountant on marketplace or bike sales. We put a new carbon hover aero bar on and new ultegra groupset but all the other components transferred including roval Slx 24 rims and Fsa gossamer cranks. Would I say I’ve improved my times by tens of seconds, no. It just feels stiffer and responds better. Soaks the bumps on rough roads better. It’s gone from 8.9kg to 7.9 kgs and when you weigh 58kgs every kilo counts.

If it's racing, I wouldn't disregard technology so much. Every gram of weight and drag reduced and every millisecond decrease in faffing around with gears for the right cadence is energy and time saved in a hours-long game decided in seconds. Even if riding for fun, a bike that is too cheap or obsolete can be frustrating. If we only cared about the rider, we'd all be racing around on steel single speeds like in the olden days.

In racing, you want to bring the best of everything. Agree its all about the rider but at the pro level, every cyclist is almost identical in terms of performance due to their weight/ power they can pull out. Therefore they have to invest in the bike to become as much efficient as possible.

Fair comparison. I used similar approach few years back with the Emonda SL6, where I paid $3500 for the bike and upgraded the wheels. On a side note, wheel + Tire upgrade is the best change you can make based on my experience. Next would be drive train, and with that, I mean move over to lighter chain and go WAX'd chains. On the wheel front, there is not need to drop thousands on high end wheels (unless you are $$$ or sponsored) . I bought some carbon hoops, high end hubs (eg white industries) and built the wheels up myself. All in I was $1300 CDN and recent comparison to the Mavic Comete 64mm, the cheaper ones are stiffer and more agile. With these mods, I was able to get the bike in the mid 16 lb range. (decent). @indonesiaamerica7050

The other thing I want to mention is that the Sport and Comp are both highly upgradable. In theor you can't get the R9 up to R whatever, of course, but the point is that the only thing that really matters other than a few grams (that you can save elsewhere when you upgrade) is the bottom bracket and seat post interfaces. On the Expert, Pro and S-Works you are stuck with the S-Works seat post. Which is great but you're boxed in. The lower models are slightly heavier but at least you can upgrade the seat posts if you find something lighter or better for your needs. So, I think that the Di2 models are all overpriced as sold. But eventually I might want to upgrade to Di2 if I like the bike full time (I have many bikes but I'm looking at my first Tarmac SL6). I'm looking at the lowest 3 models just to use as sold on some extended rides in all conditions. I want "race" performance but this isn't a top "race" bike for me. However, if I decide to live with the disks I will end up with top wheels and maybe DI2 or even Campy EPS. What I'm suggesting is that if you look at the lower models and decide that you're OK with the BB and seat post interfaces then you already have a great choice for all around riding and training. Even if you end up racing on an S-Works these are still perfectly good training bikes. And yeah, you can race on them if set up properly. I even prefer the color scheme of the Sport (silver with neon font)! Don't feel bad about compromising if you've worked out the smart economics. If I can find a Tarmac Pro in stock, then that might be the one for me. I actually prefer the Giant TCR frame (but the Tarmacs come with better wheels). The Tarmac Sport is the easiest to find in stock and it's a fine starting point. If I end up with a Tarmac Sport and a spare set of wheels when I buy a pair of carbon Rovals I don't think I'll end up regretting a thing. I'm not averse in general to buying S-Works at the right price. I still have one at home right now. The Tarmac S-Works are just overpriced for me. I'd have to run in to a really sweet deal to even consider it. Getting top wheels is more important than getting a top frame because the "trickle down" frames are so good these days.

Cam, your reviews helped me to decide on Allez, but alas only Tarmac SL4 Sport was available in my size. No regrets, fits my needs, also for instance top speed is lower 2-3kmh vs more expensive bikes. Carbon and my clumsiness combo are my only worry. Racing hill climbs, rr, tt and triathlons, finishing among last, unfazed no regrets - 99% is the engine. As its recreational, this is way more then I needed and way more fun then expected. I understand why ppl get caught up in buying 10k bikes&kits, but that is def not my thing.

At street level it comes down to one thing only ride time fitness. I have ridden almost every single day after being completely unfit driving b doubles interstate for years where your life is spent sitting in a seat or laying in a bed . I have ridden a old 2006 Litespeed 3500 km in two months and can average just under 30kmh on a 100 km ride solo and 32-33 on group rides . I drive a 2003 Ford Ranger which I bought new in 2003 for S18000 and still drive. It does not drive as good as it did the first ten years. But it has paid for itself and I have got usage out of it. I do not know if $30000 Mercedes would have been better. I bought a Windsor Wellington 3.0 from Bike Direct in Jacksonville in 2015 for under $400 which I still ride . At one time I rode 400 miles a month 2015-2017 and now 300 miles a month. Am I the fastest bike on the road, No, but I am the slowest, No and I enjoy myself.

The Expert and Pro are the sweet spot buys if you want raceable Tarmacs and you're paying for your own. There's a huge difference when you move up to (quality) carbon fiber rims. If you're only going to do "sport" riding and entry level racing then the Sport and Comp are fine. S-Works over the Pro on the Venge or Tarmac? No way. Unless they're free or heavily discounted.

You want a high-performance bike for not too much money ($2000+)? Get either the more basic carbon frame or even a modern alloy one (Sagan made a stunt racing on an alloy Allez Sprint frame earlier this year at the Tour Down Under, so there almost no difference in performance there, caad12 is another option), get a pair of around 1200 grams 50mm carbon tubular wheels from quality Chinese origin for less than $1000 for top notch responsiveness and aerodynamics, get Shimano 105 with rim brakes (same weight as Dura Ace Di2 Disk and about 1/10th of the cost). The only thing missing to complete the picture for high performance is your ability to output 300 to 400W for several hours...
@ImranWorldCyclist
@ImranWorldCyclist 5 лет назад
Trust me there is a big difference when you talking equipment alone and not a particular rider!
@julmeissonnier
@julmeissonnier 5 лет назад
@@ImranWorldCyclist Of course, there is a performance difference, but it is really relevant for the few % of the riders that are after the last few % of their potential. If you are already been training 10 to 30 hours a week for 2 or 3 years and are trying to find the last few % of your potential, then equipment makes a difference, if you are not even close to that, adding one quality training session per week (intervals), will make more difference than what there is between a $2500 bike and a pro bike. The difference is much smaller than people think and actually, most people spend the money because they enjoy having the best and latest, which has nothing to do with performance). As a reference, when talking between equipment, manufacturers will talk about how many seconds it saves on 40Km TT. My first Olympic trialthlon time was 2h50 (I was 21 years old and in pretty good shape and been riding for 8 years since I was 13), two years later it was around 2h12 (at a time there was no drafting and no aero equipment), over the same time my marathon time was cut from 3h30 to 2h58, no piece of equipment will cut 40 minutes from your time, only quality training! The difference between my 11kg 1981 steel bike and a top notch 7Kg carbon bike on my usual 1h30 hour ride is about 3 to 5 minutes, the difference between putting out 170W and 270W is about 40 minutes...
@ImranWorldCyclist
@ImranWorldCyclist 5 лет назад
@@julmeissonnier i get what you're saying and your view is justifying the big price tag in correlation to your performance and to that point where equipment does make a difference. I do own the sworks tarmc disc and just even riding at very casual pace is a pure joy simply on how the bike handles and feels. Of course iv bought it to ride fast and i have other bikes but the feel of the SWorks makes you wanna ride it all the time, so i can understand anyone purchasing this bike even if they dont have racing capabilities!

I bought a sub $200 bike. As originally supplied it did not roll adequately. I took the cheap tyres off and replaced them with quality tyres and it rolled just fine. At this level the riding position was the most important thing but this is the same on the cheapest and the most expensive bike. The tyres were the second most important factor. After this I have found that a person with the legs and the training on the cheapest of bikes can outclass a person without the training on the most expensive of bikes.

Agreed aero wheels are the best improvement. However there is a big difference in frame carbon. 5 years ago I went to buy a Focus Cayo, I test road it and it was rubbish, the frame felt like it was made of soft wood. I bought the Alzaco pro instead, a much stiffer and responsive frame. The Alzaco was £2k more expensive but worth it.

@Cam Nicholls Wasnt sure if you would get my tag from a reply that I sent below, so I'm sending this one straight to you. This was the part that I was most interested in. Maybe you should do a segment on your channel called : "Closing the Gap", where you either debut a new product for doing just that, or do a full build where you put a high end bike up against a entry level or mid level bike that has some components added to it to close the distance. Or, because its more cost effective, start a build series where you build just one bike and constantly upgraded it for a while to make it more comparable to a high end bike, but to a limit/budget. Just to see how close you can get. Then you can use that as a give away bike in the future. Just an idea. Anyway, you have a new sub regardless. Keep em' coming! 😁👍

Now you have an Allez Sprint. From what I can tell the two bikes have very similar geometries and components so what about the Venge did you not like? I ask because my Venge Elite is I think very similar to the one you probably had only yours might have had fact 9r and mine has the fact 10r and a power saddle. It's my first real road bike and I'm still constantly fiddling with the saddle and my bibs to make it comfortable on 2 hour rides and was wondering what you've done on your arguably stiffer Allez in this department. Sorry long question.

The only place I get tripped up is for the weight of a person, I can't tell if 80kg is a small person or a big person haha

Interesting re the wheels. I am looking them up now. Thanks for the feedback re $ and weight metrics. What cms instead of feet? haha. That even gets me a little, because despite the metric change A LONG time ago, I still prefer feet and inches over cms when we are talking someone's height! Cam

Cam Nicholls strangely enough I prefer feet still, but I prefer km/h because it makes me feel faster!

I've ridden carbon and aluminum for years. Cycling has always been gimmicky. Give me a fit rider a good aluminum frame with good components and most of all a great wheel set. A great wheel set on any mid-range carbon or aluminum frame will transform the performance.

Thanks for sharing. I put Enve's on my Alloy Allez and race on that. Works nicely. Cam

the best way to look at this is energy transfer , thats all a bike is , what ever bike captures the most energy , and at the same time wastes the lease energy , to perform the work , wins , then apply aerodynamics to it and you should have the best bike !!!!

@@CamNicholls wait let me try that again you also need to factor in use , you can take a 20,000 dollar track and it will never be good on gravel , so on paper all you want is energy transfer , but in the real world , durability , then over all efficiency ( which is energy transfer , then aero , and weight can be applied depending on a more specific use , like climbing bikes not needing as much aero as a crit bike , a crit bike being able to get away with being heavier because its not going up hill against gravity , but most flat so its momentum will keep it faster than less weight , i think that will cover all bases of how to buy a bike , if you are racing at the highest level specialized has that , but if you are just cycling to cycle , then they have a dedicated lineup of lower class bikes , plus the resale value drops so much you can always find a 3 year old bike for pennies ( thats USA pennies USA USA USA )
