Aquatics expert Tom Sarac provides an in-depth overview of one of the quintessential beginner aquarium fish - the Cherry Barb!
Native to the Kelani and Niwala river basins in Sri Lanka, the Cherry Barb (Puntius titteya) is an undemanding, small species with a peaceful disposition. Best kept in groups of at least 6 to 8, males feature striking red coloration, whereas females are more drab and brown in color. Cherry barbs are not territorial, are compatible with most other small, peaceful fish, and are not reknowned fin nippers like many other barbs!

I love mine. I started with one female, then a week later bought a male, and female, now my tank has 7 🍒 🐟 also have 3 stripped Tetra, and around 60 assassin snails. Everyone gets along perfectly.

I have a 75G with about 30+, ph is 6.5 and temp about 24c. Allot of wood and large Anubius. Some java moss and a couple of small fine leaf swords. They are constantly having a couple new fry every few weeks. Alsi a good number of blue neo shrimp. Love this fish.

Do they do well in higher temp, like 28C?

@@DashDrones I'm not sure I've not kept my tank higher than 25. Looking at species profiles they suggest around 23-25

Thanks for the video. I just started a 10 gal. tank. I have one small female Cherry Barb, one small Zebra Danios, and a slightly larger male Red Wagtail Platy. For now, I'm using artificial plants. They've been in the tank a couple of days. I have the water temp at 79. Ph is about 6.8 to 7.0. I've noticed the Barb spends more time near the bottom and among the foliage and away from the other fish.

I had a group of cherry barbs for about 3 1/2 years. They all passed away, except for one small male. He is in a tank with five Harlequin rasboras and five black neons. Where we live, they don’t have cherry barbs. I keep waiting to see if they will come in, but they never order them at the pet store. I hate that he is alone. Do they do OK without other cherry barbs?

Hi Vicki! While it's obviously best to keep them in groups, a single male Cherry Barb should be okay on his own. Keep an eye out for any aggressive / fin-nipping behaviors, make sure he's eating well, and keep trying to find some more - you can perhaps try ordering online!

@@fluval thank you so much for your reply. I appreciate it.! He still seems to show his bright red color from time to time but he does hide in the tunnel a lot although it doesn’t look like he’s picked on. Thanks again I will try to get them online.😊

Barbs are very territorial. Maybe not aggressive, but I've been keeping them for years and big males will definitely chase fish away from their corners and hideouts

We don't recommend it - the barbs will almost certainly eat the shrimp!

@@fluval many people said they won't. True is that I put barbs after the shrimps and they do not touch even young cherries. But I do not like those together. Barbs are staying low, hiding in places where shrimps like, they even go to get shrimps pellet food from the sand. I will get those out soon
