We discussed this and my own view is if a bike is a forever bike, get a bike fit and cut it off. This customer hadn’t ridden the bike at this height so could wind up making an expensive mistake cutting it to soon into his ownership, likewise once cut they are harder to sell if you’re someone who chops and changes your bike.

Great videos! Quick Q: have same bike and got a small (like 1,5-2 mm) play in the right lever after minor standing-still crash. Lever does not go full way back up after pushing. It seems working fine but getting me OCDs:) Is it worth to disassemble the shifter and look for a problem or leave it since its working? My local bike dealer saying that shimano levers are very complex to assemble back. Wanted to know your professional opinion.
@Bikespeeds
@Bikespeeds 2 года назад
If you have play after a bike drop, that wasn’t there before, then something is wrong & chances are something is broken. If you’re chasing along one day flat out and suddenly have to emergency stop and that weak point lets go, you’re in trouble. Either get a competent bike shop to diagnose and report back or replace the lever, it’s just not worth the risk of failure!

What do you think about tightening up the stem so far down the fork steerer tube ? My opinion is there is no reinforcing from the plug on the tube so far down, which will cause undue stress on the steerer, which of course could be catastrophic. Specislised forks haven been known to break
@Bikespeeds
@Bikespeeds 2 года назад
The plug is designed for even headset compression force not to support the steerer tube. Even compression from the stem around the circumference of the steerer tube is what’s needed. Over tightening a stem can cause fibres in the steerer to fracture if it’s made of carbon. The plug is not integral to the strength of a steerer tube.

I disagree the chain is too long... with cassettes that have large cogs such as an 11-30, a longer chain makes more sense. Shimano makes running the "little-little combo IMPOSSIBLE with Di2... BUT you can run the big-big combo... If Shimano believed the big-big to be a terrible gear to run, they would have blocked it with Di2... and while not optimal, racers want to stay in the big ring as much as possible. Therefore a chain should be sized to run the big-big and NOT to run the small ring small cog combos. Personally, I never used the little ring with any cog past the 6th from the largest cog and even that is rare (using 11 speed Shimano). I do use the big-big on many rides for a short period of time. My chains wear fine, I typically get 3000-4000 miles from a chain.

Lowering the stem without cutting off the steerer is a recipe for damaging the clamping area especially with the poor and often very short design of Specialized expander plugs. Either cut it or replace the steerer plug with an extra long one but never clamp a carbon steerer without proper support
@petesmitt
@petesmitt 2 года назад
The expander/compression plug is there to establish the headset bearings, not reinforce the steerer; what will damage the clamping area is incorrect tightening of the stem bolts; a carbon seat post has more clamping force than a stem and doesn't have internal support.. think about it.
