I love mine, they are fairly common on the property. I had luck converting mine to feed on mice by offering nothing but mice after a winter brumation period. I'm in SoCal by the way 😂.

use things that make their colors stand out like black lights. makes their white fluoresce. Fortuantly for me, im color blind so 90% of snakes stand out to me regardless of their pattern because of the shade difference. makes it a lot easier to pick them out, especially the southern copperheads that are native to the area around my hometown.

Lol your comment about being too close to Cali was hilarious 🤣. White spec are definitely a lifer for me. May need the direction to said mountain to try my luck.

Hey Max, thank you so much for the video! Max, do you have any advice for a juvenile spec, caught about 3 1/2 weeks ago. Trying to feed it thawed/warmed up black hopper mice and it's not interested in eating. i tried a lizard too. Do you just keep trying each week? I'm in SoCal where it's been in low 80's/high 70's....I'm open to any suggestions! Thanks man! Francisco

Do a baby gerbil or Campbells dwarf hamster, live. I’ve seen specs refuse an ASF but chase a gerbil down. I don’t know what it is, but it’s been super helpful with me.

Awesome, thank you. I’ll try it. Is it very easy to eventually transition them over to frozen mice, perhaps once they are older? Or I’ll need to plan on the food you recommended from here on out likely?
@MaxWildlifePhotographer
@MaxWildlifePhotographer 2 года назад
@@franciscomaria2291 It depends on the snake really. I ended up having this one like frozen thawed mice pretty quickly but sometimes it wouldn’t eat it for a whole day. So on the second day is when it’d go and eat it.

I know this is a year old but if you're still having issues, I strongly suggest using a Kangaroo Rat, at the least for scenting a F/T mouse. I haven't had this fail yet.

Where do you get your snakes? Do you catch them in the wild? Is it legal to catch one at take it home as a pet?
@MaxWildlifePhotographer

This one was wild but I followed all laws in Arizona to taking him home.

how the heck do you change their substrate and clean their enclosures???
@MaxWildlifePhotographer
@MaxWildlifePhotographer 2 года назад
You move the snake to a safe container. For him, I used a 5 gallon bucket with an apex lid. Then you can work in there without worry of bites.

@@MaxWildlifePhotographer ah okay, thank you. So it's technically the same concept as a medically significant scorpion or spider just on a larger scale. Cool 👍

@@MaxWildlifePhotographer nice! I'm in Nebraska (we are lacking in venomous species that can be legally collected) so it will be quite the drive, but worth it! I'm hoping to find at least one of the following: C. ornatus, C. Cerberus, and C. horridus. Best of luck to you finding what you are after at the show!!

What size cage is that? And what size tank would you put adult in?
@MaxWildlifePhotographer
@MaxWildlifePhotographer 3 года назад
It’s a 20 gallon. And Specks from the TA’s stay pretty small, so a 20 would suffice for them their whole lives. Other locals could take a 40 gallon equivalent.

Aren't arizona rattlesnakes illegal to collect and bring across state lines 🤔
@MaxWildlifePhotographer
@MaxWildlifePhotographer 3 года назад
There are regulations. You can do it if it is for a non-commercial purpose. So I can't start breeding specks and selling them. R12-4-404

@@MaxWildlifePhotographer so your saying I can go to Arizona and catch my spec and I can drive or fly all the way back to Texas and keep it as a pet? Or can I only drive all the way back? Do they allow venomous snakes in planes?
