Whenever I hear David Attenborough’s voice I can’t resist cracking a smile I love hearing his voice in documentaries like the Blue Planet which I have the dvds to this day since I was a young child. I’m amazed he’s still Alive god bless him. And with the music in the background and his calming narration it makes a perfect ambience for relaxation while being educated about nature 😊 And I will forever thank him for my love of nature and animals

Little thing to note: The CGI segment isn't what's actually happening in the chrysalis. The larva dissolves itself into goop and then reassembles into a butterfly. There's also evidence that butterflies retain memories from their larval stage, so there's probably a brain floating around in there too.

evidence has proved that this statement is wrong, it just moves its organs around it doesnt turn into goop

Thank you for the Video. Another thought, the butterfly is not only for mating, it is food for birds, food for your eyes and it might even enjoy its own little life as well, who knows.

DYK? Caterpillars' DNA are different from their futur butterflies' part. Because of this, there is an ongoing theory (neither proven nor disproven) stating that they are two distinct creatures. The butterfly's DNA switches on as the caterpillar dies off, a new creature born from the death of another.🐛

it's kind of sad after they undergo metamorphosis. That's means the male only have six to eight week or so to live and find a mate before they died. For the female, they died not long after laying her eggs.

Partly a fascinating video. The Part of butterfly hatching is very poor in quality and the word cocoon in the title should be changed by chrysalis. A cocoon is a protective shelter for the chrysalis woven by the caterpillar prior to pupation.
@theworthysoul

A lot of butterflies don’t even create a cocoon, usually that’s a moth thing

I have a problem with the video title. This is not a cocoon, it is a chrysalis. One may think that I am being pedantic but I'd expect an institution like the Smithsonian to get things right.

Johnny Omaha They did call it a chrysalis, the problem is that whoever uploaded this had some grammar error
@daviddentremont907

Johnny Omaha yes, it is particularly galling not only due to the caliber of the organization, but due to the fact the video itself uses the correct terminology. it gives the impression that the caption-writer didn't bother to watch the video

Butterflies don't form cocoons! Moths form cocoons, Butterflies turn into a chrysalis. Please correct your video description. It's a great little video from David Attenborough, and failure to use the correct terminology really undermines the legitimacy of this video.
