The Spectraphon combines a spectral processor with a complex VCO. While it may look huge (34 HP)) it's still a lot smaller than a combined Buchla 259 and 296. A spectral processor is a bit like a parametric EQ with CV control, where you can slide through/focus on frequency bands. SP will analyze incoming sound, classify the harmonic content (the spectrum) and adds it to its own fundamental sine. The process of resynthesis is like impressionism in paintings, creating loose and inaccurate brush strokes of the original sound. So it's NOT a sampler and it doesn't capture audio. It listens to incoming audio, and paints its own picture. The process is called Spectral Amplitude Modulation (changing the volume of individual 'colors' with CV) aka SAM. Hello, SAM!
These spectra can also be saved for later use. But it doesn't stop there. First, SP offers two independent spectral processors A & B, which can interact with an FM bus. Side B can also sync with/follow side A.
So you can process two sounds and then mangle them into beautiful new textures. You can also use the saved spectra (16 arrays containing up to 1024 spectra) in Spectral Array Oscillation mode (SAO) and use it as a dual complex spectral VCO. But it doesn't stop there either. It also offers two multi-functional outputs that work as envelope followers in SAM, and sub-oscillators in SAO. They also double as stepped/smooth random CV and a triangle LFO. Then, the journey begins. So yes, you will be influenced. Spectraphon is a Jedi mind trick. This is the droid you're looking for.
All music in this video is created with Spectraphon as the final audio source. Some parts are produced and multitracked in the DAW. I'll use a 'live' indicator when the patch is 'raw' and recorded as is.

@CinematicLaboratory
@CinematicLaboratory Год назад
This video has a lot of post production composing with multi track layers. When there's a 'live' indicator, it means it's direct case output with no post production tricks. What you hear is what you get.

@faruambient
@faruambient Год назад
great video thank you! thinking about replacing my DPO with this module? do you think the same sounds + more are doable with the spectraphon?
@CinematicLaboratory
@CinematicLaboratory Год назад
Honestly, I don't think so. In many occasions you'd want to start with a saw, square or triangle for the FM and Mod bus and let's not forget the wavefolder and individual outputs. In SP the dual sine outputs are unaffected by the FM bus, which is also a 'bummer' - but by design. The range of sounds from the SP is completely different. I'll make an episode 02 before the SP is in stores and run DPO through the SP. It will probably sound amazing in parallel with SP as an extra sonic layer.
@CinematicLaboratory
@CinematicLaboratory Год назад
So the bad news is: you'll need a bigger case.

I am not familiar with the Syntakt, but I've seen many great performances with the Syntakt sequencing a modular case. So I guess you could sequence the SP and run Syntakt's own audio through it.

Anyone could compare its with Panharmonium?
@CinematicLaboratory
@CinematicLaboratory Год назад
I did some research while making this video (watching videos) and I am under the impression that Panharmonium's engine is smoother and more advanced than the SP. I also love the dry/wet mix so you can layer spectra over the original source. It's also easier to work with presets. However - SP offers two spectral engines and an FM bus. So again it comes down to the music you'd love to make. the Pan is great for ambient textures, the SP has a wider range of applications and is closer to a normal dual VCO. Regardless, I have an eye on the Panharmonium but I could not find them new or used. I hope this speculation helps a bit.
