I made a few new animations to share for my 16x16x16 Led Cube.
Code will be uploaded to GitHub shortly.
Making one of these cubes takes a tremendous amount of effort.
I have seen some people making one for themself with my instructional video 🤩
Don’t ask me to make you one, if you want one you have to put in the work!
All design files (code, hardware, 3D print files) are shared on my GitHub.
You can also look on my channel for the build video and see how i designed and made this.

You could potentially even make it able to polarize between clear and one way, forgoing the need to swap back and forth. Not sure if this is possible with one-way mirrors but it is with regular ones

It's like the perfect fusion of technology and art. This and the game The Last of Us are the most incredible examples of technology as art I've ever seen. I mean like when it's so profound and touches you and you know it's genius beyond 99.999999 percent of earth's population. I'd love to see that in person. What do you do for a living if you don't mind me asking?
@MrJoerT
@MrJoerT Год назад
Would not recommend a pi for this project. As @Malt Whiskey said, you don't know what the OS is doing. If some thread takes priority in the middle of outputting data to the LEDs, the effect will glitch out. If you want high level control from the PI, you're better off using the pi to generate animations and sending those to an MCU for output.

I would love to build one of these, but it's a little outside of my comfort zone with the current amount of instructions. I'm mostly unsure of the wiring between the even/odd stacks, and how they interface with the "PCB". If you put mirrors on the bottom , and one of the left and right side of the cube, making 3x mirrors in total you would get an infinity mirror and it would create the appearance that the animations continue to move to an interdimensional space beyond our realm. the wave and warpdrive animations would have appeared to continue infinitely. very cool project

Really enjoyable results. I love the Helix and warpdrive as so many do. The fludity of it all is beyond good. And this project is fastly becoming a behavioural experiement for feline improbable sittings ;) Great work. Kuddos for sharing the code for the files pcb and so on. I do hope this Open hardware mouvement is going to make real change on how people view innovation. Shame such an array of programmable leds is still so expensive. Could you recommend a 'downsized' version 8x8x8 for trying out ? (my bad for the spelling approximations)
@MaltWhiskey
@MaltWhiskey 2 года назад
This project is down scaleable. Just make 4 towers half as high. I have made a few different sizes 4x5x4 for example. And instead of the teensy and the pcb i used an esp32 on a stripboard with a level shifter. The code can be changed to use the fastled library and use 8 channels instead of 32, my animation code is also easy to scale and has (mostly) adaptive timing so if you use a slower or faster microcontroller i will still play at the same speed. (A trick i learned from game development) I haven’t seen any usable open source/hardware cubes using these kind of leds. I have a video where i make the 4x5x4 but it’s over 6 hours long and right now i can’t edit this. I can make a few pictures of the stripboard with level shifter and help you a bit when you have a tower ready.

@@MaltWhiskey First off, incredible project! I'm curious about something though, you mentioned you made a smaller one using an ESP32. This is exactly what I want to make (5x5x5 probably, using WS2812B LEDs or similar), but I'm struggling to find the firmware. Most good ones, e.g. WLED, don't have 3d support, and pixelblaze (one that does), is way too expensive. Did you just use the firmware for the teensy on the esp32, with some modifications? Or did you write a new one, or something else? Any details would be appreciated (and if you could share the fw, that would be even better!). Thank you!

@@MaltWhiskey Oh awesome, didn't realise it was all already available, thanks! A couple of questions though, for the 4x4x4 cube, there's all the different firmware's (advanced example, animation example, easy example, webpage etc), what exactly is the difference? I'd love to be able to control it from a webpage, but I'd also like a few built-in animations, since I can't code. Which version is best to use? And also, can I just download the folder, open it in VSC and click upload on Platform IO? Or do I need to do some more configuration? Thanks! (and sorry for all the questions)
@MaltWhiskey
@MaltWhiskey 6 месяцев назад
@@thetechy9442 Open the folder in vscode and upload, easy as that. Those links are only examples, you can do whatever you want in your own code. But the more complex versions have all kinds of “ballast” like animation frameworks. If you just want to start simple take the easy example and make it your own.

This is amazing and beautiful! Animations might look a little clearer if reflections on the wall were eliminated. Maybe a couple pieces of black posterboard? From the dollar store if you have them there. And remove the shields. Maybe when Wesley's down at the pub? To minimize reflections from the base you could thread strips of black through. Curious to see the results, if any.
