This video 'Spectrum Analyzer - don't damage your adapters', I will show various adapters that you might need. I needed adapters for the Uni-T UTS3021B. It is a great idea to get various adapters and know which mate together. #spectrumanalyzer #Unitrend #UniTspectrum #UTS3021B #spectrumanalyzeradapters

Last summer I got a Spectrum Analyzer. N type connectors were new to me, so I started that journey of collecting adapters. Lol

You have to be careful what adapters you get too - the cheap chinese ones tend to perform very poorly at higher frequencies. If they're not made to spec, they can damage the connectors on your equipment, or the connectors on your cables as well.

Thanks. Great to see someone who has fought the good fight and can explain what I'll need for the next phase of my electron pushing and shuffling. I am thinking a lot of your work must be with decent signal levels since I see signal reflection and loss at each junction. My belief is connector conversions are fine unless you're working with a low level source where you need to get it done with minimal metal. And, how are we keeping track of cable impedance? BNC spells 50Ω but I have many connectors for use with 75Ω cable (and let's not mention 300Ω ribbon on this family friendly channel :). Do you also need to account for different impedance versions of these adaptors, or is there a de facto standard 50Ω outside TV broadcast reception?
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for the great feedback! Yes this RF stuff gets tricky - just keeping track of all the ohms;) It is a great idea to keep the connections to a minimum, but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do;) There are a lot of 50 ohm standard - but you are so right - something to keep in mind.

Agree@@KissAnalog As a side note (a bit of my heritage is Irish) I had this "devil made me do it" idea. There is a sculpture in those boxes of connectors just bursting to be seen! The one integrity rule being a measurable signal getting from one end to the other. This is only to save the hands being otherwise idle since we know what the devil can do with those. 😉

Great adapter video! I am reading about the hobby radio telescopes, 1420MHz Hydrogen Line 21-cm wavelength line. It get's into some of these adapters, TinySA Ultra, and SDR software. Also, Jameco Part no.: 2342287 has a $279 Digilent 410-396-6 Zmod Scope 1410-125: 70 MHz 2-channel [14-bit] 125MS/s Oscilloscope Module. Do you have a review video on it? 🤔

RF components are yet another place where you get what you pay for! It's been said before but worth repeating. If you're purchasing a SpecAn, then you most likely want to capture and analyze a signal. That said, resist the urge to buy cheap connectors, adapters and cables for your test setup!
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for your feedback. Adapters can be very expensive, and since this SpecAn is a loaner, I didn’t want to invest hundreds so I bought very low cost on Amazon. At work we had a loaner $60k Lecroy WavePulser, and my low cost cables and adapters looked as good as my expensive ones - except one adapter. That adapter worked but not great so could give false measurements, so that’s why I did the video on how to check your adapters.

I have bought some Uni-T gadgets, price is right. Some are durable. My conclusion on their products is, they are toys that barely works.

But then... what's the choice for the hobbyist... pay 3000 USD for a scope from Tektronix, or Keysight... or 300 USD for a Chinese scope that probably has more connectivity, and 'math' functions' right out of the box. Yes, there will be some annoying 'bugs' ... but the expensive ones can have those too. Although Keysight has made some engagement in the 'prosumer' marketplace... Keysight, and Tektronix, long ago gave up on marketing to the typical hobbyist.

Thanks for the feedback! I find my Uni-T ARB generator very nice and compact. It does things that generators costing much more - say 10 years ago couldn't do. I think that vendors like Uni-T offer low price (entry level) gear, but then they offer nice quality instruments at a much more affordable price than the big names. I have a a Uni--T scope that cost less than $700 USD, but is built just as nice as the big names and costs much less obviously. It isn't the $300 model, but then it offers much more. I find that many people go to the extremes - comparing brand name to the lowest cost alternatives - when there are many models in between that are very nice and competitive in quality to the name brand while still offering much more capability.
@lpjunction
@lpjunction 7 месяцев назад
@@KissAnalog Inexpensive tools were god-send for the hobbyist. That's what I thought, but my experience with Uni-T wasn't that good. A 4 1/2 digit multi-meter works for the first two years, then later it could not start on power on. I have to power on-off many times to get the machine to function. Later I bought a clamp meter UT210D, most reviews show it is a respectable tool for its price. But it has some bad habit of slow in measuring voltage, while I use other low cost multimeters, the voltage usually settle in less than a second, this one seems to have the reading asymptotic. Which is kind of annoying. Now I would pick tools from other brands first as there are plenty of inexpensive scopes, sig gen, VNA etc.

I can't prove it (yet) but my claim is they are all made in China. (IMO, even the ones 'saying' made in USA, are mostly manufactured in China.) The 'good' ones are expensive... sometimes very expensive. If you know how they are manufactured, and why a country makes them... then China manufactures some very good ones, at a very good price. But, 'for reasons' they are hard to get. There are 'small' U.S. distributors getting very good Chinese ones... and marking them up significantly.

The RP SMA's are used a LOT in WiFi equipment
@gorak9000
@gorak9000 7 месяцев назад
Thank the FCC for that. LIke he said in the video, in the early days of wifi, they had to use "non-standard" connectors as they only certified the whole system together - the wifi card and the antenna as a "system", and they didn't want people to swap the antennas around as then it wouldn't be a "certified system" anymore (even though it's all in an ISM unlicensed band anyway). To get around that rule, they invented the reverse polarity connectors. RP-SMA and RP-TNC were and are extremely common, and f'ing annoying, because you also need adapters to go from RP to normal connectors too, and you can mate connectors together with normal female to RP-female that thread together on the outside, but don't make a connection at all on the center conductor. Thanks FCC
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 7 месяцев назад
Yes we have to thank the FCC on doing something that didn't really accomplish what they wanted - but only made things so much more confusing. Now we have to have 4x the adapters to cover the combinations...
@willthecat3861
@willthecat3861 7 месяцев назад
@@gorak9000 AFAIK the consequence of the 'certification' was that an isotropic radiator (or practical equivalent) was employed. With the 'standard' SMA, one could easily buy, a good directional antenna, and connect it to a good WIFI device (say 30 dBm) and violate the FCC regulations, for maximum transmitted power. They didn't want people changing antennas.
@gorak9000
@gorak9000 7 месяцев назад
@@willthecat3861 Considering that RP connectors were widely available, even when wifi devices first came out, and people did infact put high gain directional antennas in place of the omnis, and ran long distance wifi links, they failed miserably. I was doing that back in 2001 - was making custom RP-TNC to N cables with LMR-400, and attaching 24dBi parabolic antennas in place of the omni's on Linksys WAP-11's - you could get reliable links of a few miles! I'm sure these days there are millions of such links setup, and no one cares. There are even off the shelf bridge radios with integrated high gain antennas specifically for that very application. Just useless over regulation from the FCC sticking their nose where it doesn't belong.
