Is it normal for a doctor to ask you what size speculum you normally use or need? I found the question rather strange.

It's only by request. Please take in to consideration, some of our patients are triggered from SA or injuries. While most seem like a "one size fits all", we do our best to make sure all our patients are comfortable. Hope that helps!
