I often skip wrap-ups from many reviewers because they seem useless, but kaiielle's thorough analysis at the end of each reaction is truly enjoyable. The effort put into extensively reviewing movies and shows demonstrates genuine care for the content, which I love seeing applied to my favorites. This channel is criminally underrated.
Hollywood legend says this movie was pitched as "Die Hard on a bus," one of my favorite VHS's to watch over and over again. To explain the barrels of water, they're there to give you a cushion in case someone is heading for something less soft, like a metal pole. Water doesn't compress, so having sealed barrels wouldn't help, you may notice the tops come off fairly easily. That's by design, the lids are just there to keep the water in or from evaporating. Having the water pushed upward shifts the momentum to the water and away from the vehicle, acting as a shock absorber.
Not that it really matters, but... "Legend" is wrong. The comparisons came relatively early, but wasn't anything related to how it was pitched. And even by that time, the "on a bus" trope was well established. It was based around "Runaway Train," and more or less pushed from that idea. The "Die Hard On A Bus" idea, while very accurate, didn't play any role in it being made.
Fun fact: Keanu and Sandra were interviewed recently about this movie and its legacy, and they both revealed they had crushes on each other during filming. So, all those affectionate looks they were giving each other while delivering their lines was all genuine crush feels.🙂
LOVE THIS MOVIE! Before Keanu Reeves was cast as the hero, Kurt Russell, Alec Baldwin, Tom Cruise, Charlie Sheen, Tom Hanks, Stephen Baldwin, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Harrison Ford were considered for the lead. Before Sandra Bullock was cast as Annie, Meryl Streep, Ellen DeGeneres, Halle Berry and Anne Heche were considered for the role. Before Dennis Hopper was cast in the role of villain, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, and Robert DeNiro were considered. John McTiernan, director of DIE HARD was going to direct the project, but had to drop out due to scheduling issues with LAST ACTION HERO, and Cinematographer Jan De Bont was brought in after De Bont was let go from Sony as their 1994 GODZILLA project was cancelled. Joss Whedon(Buffy, Serenity, Firefly) rewrote the action scenes. The scene where Reeves jumps from the car to the bus was done for real and it was filmed in one take. There was at least 11 buses used on the film for the action scenes and where they had to attached several cameras on the front and the back. It was a box office and critical success, making $350 million dollars against a $40 million dollar budget and won 2 Oscars, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
🚌 The containers of water are often called "crash cans" in my part of Southern California, though there may be other names for them. They're common, here, and they're to help take the force of a crash and redistribute it. When Keanu leapt from that one guy's car onto the bus, and the guy crashed into the barrels, those barrels are why the guy survived. I mean, it isn't fun; I imagine it's like an airbag and that it hurts like a sumbitch, but, you know, you're _alive_ to hurt.
Speed is just so good. Beside the jump being the most eggregious thing, everything keeps you on the edge on the seat all the way through. Such a fun ride ;)
The water barrels absorb and dissipate the energy of a vehicle impact much better than any solid barrier. Oh I just noticed my daughter put the same answer in the chat. (We're miles apart...) 🚌
I was trapped in a ski gondola once; it was mid summer at the time and there was a lightning storm. Don't ask me why we were up there. It was the early 80s so the gondola was barely larger than a Disney teacup. As the wind picked up, it started to swing slowly back and forth, back and forth, over a thousand foot drop. One of my treasured memories.
Yes they do have those water containers in some places. They abosrb impact energy. Cars these days have crumple zones for crash protection. Think of these as external crumple zones. Cheap and cheerful

I got trapped in a packed glass elevator in a conference building for about half an hour or something. Everyone could see us, which slightly embarrassing. Later in that trip, we were staying in a really crappy hotel and as I stepped into the elevator there, there was a loud clunk as my weight was added. I said 'No.', got out of the elevator and took the stairs.
Some facts about "Speed": -Jan De Bont had been a cinematographer on several successful movies (including "Die Hard"), This was his first directing job. He later directed the successful "Twister" and the not-so-successful "Speed 2: Cruise Control". -Joss Whedon did an uncredited rewrite. -Alan Ruck's character was originally supposed to be an arrogant lawyer forced to take the bus case his car was in the shop. -In one of the earlier drafts, it seems like Dennis Hopper's character is behind the bus bombing, but we later learn that he really was killed wheh he seemingly faked his own death, and that Jeff Daniels' character would be the real badguy.
So stuck in an elevator story: Not too long ago. Late night so not a lot of people moving too frequently. Took my pizza delivery, heading to my apartment on the 4th floor, when the elevator started acting funny. It sped up but then slowed down after the second floor, did not open on the 4th floor, went to the top floor and the sign in the elevator said its still going up. Did not open for the next 10 mins and I was not getting signal on my phone to call someone. Kept pressing the alarm, no one answered. It was only about an hour later that I was able to send 1 text to my neighbour and she was able to call the person to get the elevator rebooted and I was able to get out. The thought, and a funny one, that was in my mind the whole time was "where is this lift going for so long beyond the 6th floor?"
"I ship these two already". So did they. Unfortunately they never admitted it to each other and only found out decades later when Sandra admitted it on a talk show.
I watched this for the first time recently too. To sum up my feelings, I was absolutely EXHAUSTED when it was over, and felt like I could finally breathe again. Few movies have your anxiety that high pretty much nonstop through the entire thing like that. But it's good for that; if there was ever a movie that deserved to be called a "non stop thrill ride" this is it. Prometheus is another that comes to mind, but like you said horror is a different kind of tense....but it's a movie I've had to stop halfway even on rewatches because I was already so beaten down by the first half that I couldn't stomach whatever insanity it was going to put me through next.
I've always felt Speed is a near perfect action movie. Fast paced, snappy dialogue, sizzling hot chemistry between Reeves and Bullock - what's not to like? I've watched it countless times over the years and always have a fun time with it. It's great to see people still enjoying it 30 years on. Thanks for a great reaction and review.
the baby carriage is one of the best jump scares in movie history Man I love the 90s... pretty much the last time we were seeing summer tentpoles with original scripts and premises Mark Mancina's score is underrated in this flick - it's genuinely cathartic, the musical cue when Jack and Annie finally escape the bus

Speed is one the best 90s action thriller movies ever. This movie most probably made Keanu Reeves an action movie star. He had done mostly comedies and dramas before this movie.
4:26 ..."Has anyone ever been trapped in an elevator?".... Once, I was going up in my building when the power shutted down, and I was trapped for about an hour..... no big deal if it wasn't for the fact that I was in desperate need for a toilet and I had to hold it for an hour.... I wanted to died 😅
From 2000-2010, I managed an entire high rise complex for a very large oil company. It was Saturday morning and I was "Manager on Duty" (myself and five others rotated on the Saturday morning shift). Anyway, the two security guards in one building called and had heard an elevator crash into the basement. I called the oil company's shift director as well as the building owner's shift director. In the meantime, I instructed the security guards not to let anyone in or out of the building until every single person had been accounted for (people working in the building had to sign in). The building owner's security had the key for that particular elevator but refused to open it. I could have called the fire department, but: 1) I had no known victims. 2) The FD would cause at least 10k in damage to the elevator, which would open a whole different can of worms. I had the oil company's security shift director and one guard do a floor by floor sweep (24 floors) to account for everyone that had signed in. I called my boss and asked her to call the CEO and ask the CEO to lean on the building owner (he didn't answer his phone that weekend). I then went to my office and looked up the VP that would have this building (and two others) among his responsibilities. I asked him to email all the group leaders (there was about 80) and account for all the people in their groups. When the floor count was completed from the sign in book, we found that there were three people unaccounted for. Myself and the security shift director went to my office and did "card read pulls" as well as looking at video of that morning. We concluded that the missing people may have just snuck out of the building (one corner of the lobby was fuzzy for some reason). The head counts, completed Monday morning, accounted for everyone. Three months later. Security guards from the same building called me on a Saturday morning. The building owner was trying to do a quiet replacement on the crashed elevator. I went to the basement, but the building owner's security wouldn't let me near the elevator. I called the off duty cop we had working at the complex that morning. The owner's security and the elevator company kept us both from looking. The cop said "You wanna play hardball, fine." He pulled out his cellphone and made a call. 45 minutes later, a SWAT team, cadaver dog team and the forensic team were there. The elevator guys were kept from working for about two hours. Also, the oil company CEO was reachable that morning and accident investigators from the oil company investigated and took pictures. I caught the building owner's security shift director giving me a look. I told him: "All you had to do three months ago was just open those elevator doors, but no, you wanted to be hard headed. Reap what you sowe buddy."
I gotta say it. The bus jumping that span really took me out of it when I first watched and it still does to this day. My disbelief could not be suspended or even given a time out after that one. 😄
Don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but the actor you recognized near the beginning (with the eyebrows) likely impressed the director of that film, Twister, since he also directed this one (and obviously cast the actor again). The director's name is Jan de Bont, who was an acclaimed cinematographer before he turned to directing.
This is one of my favorite movies ever because it was made here where I was born! The movie came out one year before I was born so I treat this movie like a time capsule of a time before was around. That one scene where the kids were almost hit always got a kick out of me because they were totally walking towards one of my schools. The road where it happened is literally like a 5 minute walk from my house xD I loved this movie so much growing up that I even bought myself a model of the bus from this movie. Speed, also known by it's FRIENDS title "The One where Sandra Bullock jumps a City Bus over a 50 foot gap in a highway." Easily my favorite Young Keanu movie.
Believe it or not, the LA subway system did not even open until 1990. So, the unfinished rail lines were very real and realistic. It also took them a while to realize they needed to have more ramps and stations at LAX. I think the filmmakers were probably able to take advantage of a lot of real life situations in LA.
At 14:56, Keanu was supposed to *pretend* like he was about to jump and then it would cut and a stunt man would do the actual leap, but Keanu felt he could do it and that is really him doing it.
This movie gets a lot of hate from people in my family. They say it's too unbelievable, and nothing but mindless action. I've never been able to understand why people would dislike it. Yes, the bus jumping scene is ridiculous. But other than that, once this movie kicks off the action, it is literally non-stop thrills until the end. There's barely time to take a breath! It was never going to win any awards for best screenplay or anything, but it wasn't meant to. It's an exciting, entertaining popcorn flick, and it doesn't try to be anything but what it is.
The barrels are called Finch Barrels, John Finch was a racer at the 1955 LeMans disaster, and quit racing for a time and worked on car safety, and his idea was you put those barrels in front of concrete walls and such to absorb the impact. He later won his class in 1960 at lemans
24:50 Yes, not quite believable. This is called "suspension of disbelief" in movies. But what makes the bus jumping scene great is that there was no use of CGI nor models: they actually jumped a full size bus over a gap, albeit a smaller gap, but what you see on screen was actually filmed.
I got trapped in an elevator. It still worked, going up and down when people pushed the button to get the elevator to their floor, but the doors wouldn't open. And mobile phone signals where blocked because of the shaft, had to rely on someone to call for repairs. 45 minutes in it. 🚌

Speed is constant action & fun with the criminal element. Great reaction! Another action thriller is True Lies - 1994 film; suggest adding to your future watch list. Yep, another 1994 film.
OMG LOL THE PAUSE IN BLACK AND WHITE AT THE START!!! I love your visceral reaction to this movie the whole way through. Imagine having worked on a movie that decades later still gives people the same feelings you hoped to convey. The way you describe it as getting more and more intense the whole way through... what an honor your reaction would be for them to see. I remember thinking the same things you said, like I don't blame them for the flying bus angle, because this movie has brilliant practical effects from the days before EZ CG could make any dream come true. Dennis Hopper and Sandra Bullock were fantastic actors in this, and Keanu was just being himself, a real hero. Perfect reaction as usual. Loved this movie! You can't overthink it. It's supposed to be just pure, popcorn fun. I loved the tension and how it never seemed to end (at the end). Loved Sandra and Keanu and want to think they are still married (IRL) in another universe. ❤
🚌 Once the bus first goes above 50 the plot doesn’t slow down until the end credits. Absolutely wild and so much destruction to LA. Epic crushes developed on both Sandra and Keanu from this film big time. I’m so glad you enjoyed it!!
This movie is great. It dials up the tension right from the beginning and never lets up. Really fun movie. Some genuinely hilarious parts too, like when the spanish guy on the bus says, "You're not too bright man, but ya got some big round hairy cajones!"
The “Wildcat” comment was about the University of Arizona’s sports teams. They call themselves the Arizona Wildcats. And Sandra Bullock’s character is wearing a University of Arizona T-shirt.
Love your content....Was stuck in an elevator for about an hour and a half with 5 people. No AC makes that time VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. Wish I could say it was a big blackout caused by something like in The Eastern US/Canada blackout of 2003 but NO! I was in California in 1999-2001 and due to ENRON and them playing with our Power Grid we had rolling Brown-outs and our zone happened to be one of them they flipped off the power for a time. I can't remember the exact year think it was 2000 but that summer after that I did not ride in ANY elevator! Thank goodness most of my business never went above the fifth floor LOL
Hi KL, great reaction to a classic. I know Jack and Annie are the heroes, but Dennis Hopper always played a great villain. He'll be sorely missed, but Howard Payne will live on in Speed history.
The water barrels are placed at off ramps to cushion a collision. If someone misses the ramp and hits the barrier they would be killed. The water placed Infront would absorb and cushion the impact. Today we use a mix of water barrels and collapsing barriers that crumple to absorb collision and some times we use both crumple barriers and water barrels.

Anyway, 'natural' thrillers are always more stressful than 'supernatural' thrillers, because they are more 'relatable'? I don't know. I am less scared of a ghost than an elevator, so... 🤷🏻♂️ You can always get 'invested' in characters when they are relatable, or loveable, which makes their loss more emotional, but a good "fun" movie makes characters very likable, and this movie had it in Jack & Annie. 7:11 Intense action/danger scenes at the beginning of a movie seem so much more riveting than at the end (at least for pop action movies), because you don't know if this is the "main character screwed up" horrible moment or just showing that they pull off the badass rescue
I feel like the director(s) said, this movie is going to be called Speed and we're bringing all the intensity and trauma that speed can lead to. That music is iconic and captures the movie well and glad you thought so too.🚌
One of the best action movies of the 90s or ever, really. Funnily enough, the sequel is widely considered one of the worst. Don't bother with it. Enjoyed watching, as always!
🚌 Excellent reaction, love how, having seen this movie a billion times, you reacted to certain things. This was the first rated R movie that my dad let me watch, and it's held a very special place in my heart.
The problem with the bus jumping the gap is that they stated it was a 50 foot gap leading up to it but then they get to it and it's more like 75 to 100 feet. 50 would have been tough but the jump they end up doing isn't possible. lol
They made many movies similar to this one during the 90s. Where a crazy guy put bombs everywhere for our hero to find and disarm. Out of those I think Die Hard 3 is probably the best to watch, and in a way the one most similar to Speed. There's always Speed 2 though if you want more of Sandra but remember it's not on the same level as the first one. But It's still fun to watch and is actually very underrated.

I always thought those are some kind of shock absorber if anybody misses the turn and they placed them after people kept crashing over and over failing to take the turn properly (maybe not due to lack of driving skills, but driving drunk or on drugs).
Oh my God, I love that you googled how many km/h 50m/h are, I did that sooooo many times for this movie cause I would always forget. Today it's the main thing I know about miles per hour km per hour😂 Same with the water thingys, that stuff doesn't exist here as well, but I've seen it so many times on tv and in movies
I love everything about this movie and never get tired of it. If you want to see a movie where Jeff Daniels has a lot of screen time, watch Gettysburg from 1993. He plays Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, commanding officer of the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
Director Jan de Bont came up with the elevator scene while working as the cinematographer for Die Hard, because he got caught in one en route to the set one day.
One of my favorite movies growing up with two of my favorite actors😍 My mom got actually in trouble with my dad because she let me watch it when I was like 12, but the regulars say 16😅 Also, love the stupid fact that apparently both Sandra and Keanu had a crush on each other and didn't know (who knows if that's true, but I like it) Anyway got a tendency to comment before watching, I should really do sth about that xD
People just watching this nowadays don't know what a big deal it was at the time. People now think of Keanu as a great actor and a great action star. At the time before this Keanu was known for playing stoners and dumb guys. And to some degree most didn't think he was acting. He wasn't considered a great actor (he was liked in comedy roles as the stoner/dumb guy though). When news came out that he was going to be doing an action movie, people laughed at the idea. Nobody that saw the movie though didn't immediately realize it was great casting. Seeing the fact that he had some muscles surprised a lot of people in itself.
