This is an introductory-level video about speed, distance, and time calculations used by marine navigators. This is a good lesson for elementary and middle school students just learning algebra to see a practical use of those math skills. It is also good for professional navigators interested in refreshing their skills before exams.
Speed is equal to distance divided by time.
Time is equal to distance divided by speed.
Distance is equal to speed multiplied by time.
Distance is in nautical miles.
Time is in hours.
Speed is in knots (nautical miles per hour).
To convert from hours to minutes, multiply by 60.
To convert from minutes to hours, divide by 60.
Understanding speed, distance, and time calculations is critical for passing Coast Guard chart plotting and navigation exams, as well as becoming a safer boater out there on the water.
If you are preparing for your Coast Guard exams, at any license level, I have a variety of license preparation videos available at www.practicaln...
Happy Navigating!
