Been wanting to talk about this movie forever so I'm glad I finally get too with the last video of 2023! Hope you all had a great christmas and a happy new year!!!
John Goodman as Pops Racer is also peak fatherly! No unironically, a while back, after rewatching, it blew my mind just how much of my own father I saw in Pops: a stubborn, passionate and flawed man, but who still loves his family above all else and would do anything for them no matter what
@@jknifgijdfui You’ll never win as a Crystal Skull fan. I like that movie too, but people cannot overlook the unrealistic stuff in that movie about a professor who travels the world with a bullwhip fighting Nazis and retrieving artifacts such as the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant.
The special effects on the movie actually gave it a fresh look. Wait till we get a reboot cartoon of the speed racer, i can bet you the makers of that reboot will take inspiration from this movies effects.
This movie and Sky high were my favourite movies as a kid, they both are the colourful brightness that works but isn’t seen in many other movies as it’s dangerous to do so as it fails all too often
I remember watching this movie with some friends and for some reason it made me physically sick. I was dry heaving and clenching my gut. Watching this video made my stomach church a little as a result. Good job.
I think one of the greatest things a piece of art can do is be sincere. That is art in it's purest form. I was never able to pick a favorite movie, it's between Spirited Away, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, and the Iron Giant. Having been to film school, I was enamored by the pretentious, cinematic masterpieces like 2001 Space Odyssey or Yojimbo. But after watching a shit ton of those movies, I realised that I always went back to those 4 movies. I really like these movies, these fantastical movies about the realest emotions. Another one of my favorite movies is the 1995 Jumanji. It's a movie with monkeys driving motorbikes, but also about a story of a boy dealing with his fears, and loss of time. That sheer contrast is almost beautiful.
God speed racer is also my Roman Empire! I legit talk about this movie so much my friends get annoyed now… but it’s just like so good I can’t stop talking about it. I truly believe this was the greatest movie ever made and I will fully die on that hill. This movie is a love letter to film, it is beautiful, inspiring, and everything art should be!
This is my favorite movie. I am usually crying at multiple parts throughout because of how emotionally sincere and impactful it is, it's like my go to emotional support movie for when things are going wrong.
They should make another movie or series but animated in the Spiderverse style. Make it a sequel or just tell a different story. Personally I'd prefer a sequel series continuing the story of the movie, explore new race circuits etc and the Spiderverse animation would enhance the movie's visual style.
I was four when this movie first came out, and I was nothing short of obsessed with this movie. The DS game I unlocked every character, I got almost all the Hot Wheels I could find. I owned the movie on DVD, it was my life. It was kind of a surprise as a kid to learn the movie wasn't very popular. Back then I was mostly interested in the cars and the action, but now as I'm older I feel validated in watching my favorite movie of all time be re-evaluated as a forgotten classic.
Honestly if someone calls themselves a cinephile and cannot appreciate the cubism of Speed Racer, they haven't understood anything. You don't have to like it, but you have to be able to see the sheer skill.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH AND I'M SO GLAD SOMEONE IS FINALLY TALKING ABOUT IT!!! THE OPENING TITLE CARD OF THE VIDEO WHERE YOU PLAYED THE SPEED TRAVER THEME LITERALLY GAVE ME CHILLS!!! ❤❤❤
Agreed the visuals are unparalleled til this day I had 3 movies on my iPod touch growing up Napoleon dynamite step brothers and this all classics all from limewire in HD but this movie needs no lore or sequel this movie is perfect on its own
I was just thinking about this movie the other day and wanted to see more about it. I rememeber seeing this in theaters and not remembering it being so...colorful. ...I love it
yup, my favorite movie of all time and it will never change. also damn, imagine if you loved racing as much as i do XD it makes this movie infinitely better
Lol I love that "Speed Racer is my Roman Empire" haha. I never really got that forced meme b/c maybe I just didn't think about the Roman Empire? Or maybe only if someone mentioned Gladiator's opening battle scene haha But yes, Speed Racer is my Roman Empire hah. Same goes for Contact or Under The Silver Lake, even. Underrated movies that don't get the attention and remembrance they deserve.
@@naadirbuffy7892 Definitely not the best movie ever made but EASILY the best anime to live action adaptation ever made. Nothing else even comes close.
The opening 12 minutes or so of this movie always makes me cry. It does an incredible job of providing all the backstory and exposition to get us to the “present time,” and the start of the movie, all while making us emotionally invested in the family and the individual characters. My eyes tear up when the Racer family is watching on TV as Rex is, apparently, killed and I cry when Speed is about to break the all time record currently held by Rex as the family watches conflicted over whether they should be happy or sad if Speed breaks Rex’s record, but then Speed himself, racing against Rex’s “ghost,” eases his foot off the accelerator so that he just barely misses breaking the record. Then we get the great transition to the opening title including those great few notes of music. And the movie has just begun.
@@andrewhigdon8346I will admit that this movie is an unabashed assault on the senses and some people straight up can't handle that. This really isn't a movie for everyone. But for me, what makes this movie so great is that it absolutely nails everything that it sets out to do. It's also incredibly sincere about what it wants to be. For me, that is the mark of a masterpiece. No matter what you're trying to do, whether it be peak introspective, subtle writing that appeals to Scorsese's definition of cinema, or a bombastic comic book spectacle with cheesy dialogue and one-dimensional characters. Sincerity with skill and talent will always create a masterpiece. This is the movie they wanted to make, and they nailed it, even if it isn't for everyone. Nothing about it feels corporate. It feels incredibly genuine, like this is exactly the film that they wanted to make. The villains are the opposite of subtle, but MAN is that performance spectacular. Keeping everything in focus, like a drawing, is conventionally poor filmmaking, but they were intentionally trying to make it look and feel like an anime. The action is insanely bombastic and over the top, but the characters behind it have a skill and sincerity to their performance that wouldn't be out of place in peak cinema. Every choice this movie makes that turns people off was done incredibly well to the best of everyone's collective ability. Regardless of subjective taste, in my opinion, that makes it a objective masterpiece. It's kind of like how the Mario movie was a pretty poor movie, but a fantastic Mario movie. The only difference is that while you can clearly tell that speed racer was completely authentic, the Mario movie feels very much like an illumination film with its celebrity voice casting and song choices. So although it had many Mario fans grinning ear to ear the whole film, it still feels like a corporate movie. It doesn't feel like the director's unfiltered vision for what they wanted to do. Ultimately, it's okay if the movie isn't for you. It's okay if what we love about it doesn't appeal to you.
i had tears of joy for half the damn movie........It was like nothing i had ever seen.....or felt.....it was so awesome to see speed come to life..............no other movie got me the way this one did......Make sure you watch out for the car acrobatic team! Those guys are mean
Yes. This movie goes all in on color and an HDR treatment would bring it to a whole new level. The same goes for Tron Legacy with its incredibly dark backgrounds against bright lines.
Two of my favorite movies are at total opposite ends of that realism scale. Speed Racer is entirely CGI around the actors, whereas I'm not sure if Ford v. Ferrari has a single piece of CGI in the entire film. Both tell brilliant stories about passion and love for cars and racing, and both manage to speak intimately to every gearhead in the world. Speed Racer is what racing looks like in the imagination of every kid who just got his first Hot Wheels track. Ford v. Ferrari is practically a love letter showing us that someone out there cares about cars just as much as we do.
I always tell my friends “what’s your favorite movie”. I then go on to tell you have to movie this film and only this movie anytime you want to watch anything. A Movie that never gets old. My answer is always speed racer, it’s dynamic and engaging but not tiring. It’s a movie i could watch over and over forever.
I regret ignoring this movie for as long as I did. It was a person on an Internet forum that got me to take a look at it, and I was so glad that I had! It was absolutely beautiful and that final race was incredible!
What I like about this movie is that it tried to feel somewhat accurate to the original 1967 cartoon which is unironically great. This movie didn't need to be super realistic, and it wasn't.
my dad took me to this movie on a whim in 2008 and it's been a part of my life ever since, i cherish it dearly! i'm making it my mission to get my friends to watch it by year's end mark my words lol
This movie is a great example of “who cares what the critics think.” If the fans liked it, then it was a good movie. I genuinely enjoyed this movie, and I watch it every now and then. We the fans should tell the critics that they can say what they want, but the more important group thought it was good.
I've seen it in the cinema and loved every bit of it. In addition to the anime connection, the movie looks like an arcade racing game. Especially one from around 2000, or earlier: oversaturated colors, flat lighting, flat trees, textures along the tracks stretched "track-wise" to look better at speed, not-matching skyboxes. They even have a frickin' ghost car! The tracks were made by video game track designers. However, not one video about Speed Racer mentions video game connection - so, maybe it's just me.
I always loved this movie ever since I was a kid. I was never put off by the techniques this film used because it felt like the world this movie is in really deserved it. I’m super upset that we never got a sequel because man, we really do need one right now
If they ever rerelease this in theaters I will be first in line. I managed to see it in IMAX when it came out and it is still one of the best cinema experiences of my life. The fact that there hasn't been a 4k release is downright criminal.
You deserve so much more recognition man. Even if I don’t agree with this take your quality in your vids and the way you talk about your thoughts are enough for anybody to sub. It sucks your videos aren’t doing as well as they used to.☹️ again, you deserve so much more recognition.
Hate it or luv it, as far as color visuals go, Speed Racer is one of the most dazzling films ever made and like all movies, this demands to be seen upon the big silver screen.
While I don’t see what the brief mention of super hero movie fits in This was a great essay as always Mitch, to go along with the brief mention of Snyder here I think the reason Rebel moon is doing better than Batman V Superman is that he’s now making a new story that’s made perfectly with his style instead of forcing other characters into it.
Like any great movie, it makes you care about its characters, and then the action is completely bananas yet strangely easy to follow. I think it would do well in a limited re-release in theatres through word of mouth. Modern audiences are bound to enjoy it they just dont know it yet.
This is my favourite movie of all time. Nothing will ever beat it out! I had no idea it bombed when it came out cuz I was 8 and didn’t know (or care) about how well things did. I first got the movie as a burned DVD, then eventually I got the Blu-ray & official DVD, and I’ve watched this movie a couple times a year every year since I’ve had it! It is art at its finest and it shaped who I am 😊 Also I’m pretty sure I can recite it word for word 😂
I like that FINALLY, after 16 years, people are starting to see the work of art that this film is. Unfortunatly, it was overshadowed by Iron Man's launch, if it came around by today's standarts of moviemaking, it would probably render AT LEAST 1 oscar. (sorry for any tippo, english is not my first language.)
Watching your video is like a dream come true. I never thought there would be anyone else that was in awe of "Speed Racer" (2008) like me. For 16 long years all I read or heard is what a terrible movie it is. The amazing thing is that I had the same excitement in the theater as when I watched the cartoon in the late 1960's. The Wachowski's accomplished that same astonishment as when I first watched "Superman: The Movie" (1978) in the theater. But somehow "Speed Racer" did not receive the same critical acclaim.
This movie SUCKED!!!!! Period!!! As a kid who grew up watching Speed Racer, what I grew up seeing and absorbing was what I expected in this live action version of the story. And that WAS NOT delivered!!!
This is the movie that just I couldn't see it be AS amazing of a film if it wasn't this super stylized live action CG hybrid. There is nothing like, Go Speed Racer GO!
Speed Racer is my favorite live action movie of all time. My biggest regret is that I listened when I was told not to see it in theaters by high school friends.
I watched the cartoon as a kid in the 70’s, and loved every minute of it. The design of this movie is a dead ringer mirror of a PlayStation Snowboarding game from the late 90’s. The tracks, the swirling “cinematography”, the whole feel of it. Stylized would be an understatement. It’s kind of intoxicating.
I missed this originally, thought it was a cash grab. Then i saw it on RU-vid for free recently and holy shit this is one of the best adaptations of an anime ive ever seen.
This is SUCH a great film. I will watch it any time I can and recommend it always. If you need to know what it feels like... It's as close as you can get to when you used to play with toy cars as a child. All the incredible things you imagined; they are here.
You should try out the video game tie-in to this movie, it hits just as hard, AND the directors had the game developers design the tracks for the movie, not the other way around!!
I have watched all three of the movies that were released at the time Speed Racer was released in the movie theater. I still only think about Speed Racer sometimes because of the impressionist/ formalist art over I ran man 3 and Indian Jones and the Crystal Skull which caused this movie to bomb.
You have concisely put into words, in this very cogent discussion everything that I could NOT put into words since this movie was released. Sure, this was my favorite cartoon when I was 5-6 years old...hell, I ruined a couple Big Wheels when I was around that age because I was TRYING to make it perform like the Mach 5, while punching various imaginary buttons on my handlebars. :) I readily admit I'm biased on the subject of Speed Racer, in any of its forms. BUT the crux of what you expertly discussed here IS based on verisimilitude -- the world-building that the Wachowskis commenced here IS faithful AND honest from start to finish. Everything that I loved about the mid-60s anime-based version of Speed, I loved x500 in the mid-2000s movie. And I wonder if you're right...IF this movie would be re-released, WOULD it do much better today? At any rate...I think this movie should be studied alongside the so-called classics in ANY film class going forward. Thank you for a well reasoned, balanced and spot-on discussion here!!!
I somewhat remember seeing Speed Racer in theatres but do remember having the Hot Wheels cars and the tire carrying case, alongside some McDonald's toys that were used to promote the movie with the Uno branded card deck & the Wii video game; which is all buried in my closest I think. I kept thinking of this movie when I was young by watching the pre-saved trailer on my mom's blackberry when I went to play brick breaker lmao.
Light years ahead of its time this movie is absolutely brilliant I am blown away by the fact that they managed to make this movie and bring speed racer to life.....I lived and died with speed in the cartoon every day when i was young.......my god you guys made a movie that touched my heart in a way I can't even explain......you brought out something that is linked to my childhood.... something that makes me so happy. watching this movie was just pure and total joy.....you guys brought speed racer to life and dear god I love you for it .......the attention to detail....all kinds of easter eggs.....absolute masterpiece go speed racer GO
Thanks for saying all the things that I hold in MY mind about this EXCELLENT film it is in my top 5 greatest films of all time along with the original King Kong and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
YESSSSSSSSSSS I LOVE WHEN THEY MAKE STUFF LIEK THIS, SPEED RACER IS MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME AND CHANGED MY LIFEEEEEEEEEEEE YEESSSSSSS, intro very very very good
One of my all time favorite movies!! Curious….. watch your Cyclops video all the time about why he’s the best X-Men and how dirty they did him. You’re correct, but what’s your opinion on the Henry Cavill rumors of him playing the man himself?
"This isnt a video for art critics", proceeds to use a lot of fancy words to explain how ACTUALLY🤓 the movie looking like shit is good!!. Anime can be just as silly and honest and commit to its world without looking this bad, sorry but this movie was hated for very legit reasons. They should have stuck closer to the source material which had all the positive qualities of the movie without being so weird even anime fans with high rule of cool appreciation were turned off
