never used that diamond when cutting the bird's mouth. in fact don't ever remember seein one on my speedsquare. would pull 2-1/4 in up from the bottom of the plumb cut and then use the square to finish the bird's mouth cut. I question that diamond alignment technique resulting in an accurately square bird's mouth.

Diamond is at 3½" btw. Can use it to scribe anything at 3.5 w your pencil.
@nomadicgodking
@nomadicgodking Год назад
I think that’s the real reason for it. Because not all rafters sit on a 3.5” top plate.
@petercoffin6251
@petercoffin6251 Год назад
Birdsmouth cuts should never extend beyond 25% the width of a rafter. (It’s not necessary for a rafter to contact the entire width of a top plate.)
@ticktickboom420
@ticktickboom420 Год назад
Some codes require 3.5inches bearing on all rafters and joists.
@ticktickboom420
@ticktickboom420 Год назад
Except if one board is wider than others your birdsmouth will change size which means your "height above plate" will change. It will show up in the cornice. Use the diamond from the top of rafter when you mark your common pitch, then do the reverse angle to that mark. Except I always went with a 4¼ H.A.P.
@andrewanderson4281
@andrewanderson4281 Год назад
Everything is easy and teachable when you can do it wrong and ignore HAP, planing the HAP top of rafter roof plane, abiding max heel cut % of rafter stock, measuring rafter line length which is parallel with the top of rafter length and can actually create the pitch per plan, oh and 99 of roof cutting and stacking geometry rules of the trade😂 what happened to books in this world

@dannailer657
@dannailer657 Год назад
You only do that on the first common. After that birdsmouth is laid out check the height a ove plate and that is the dimension used for the rest of the commons. You need to use the height above plate on the rest of the commons because all the rafter material is not the same width.
@Electric_City_RC
@Electric_City_RC Год назад
the dimension you are referring to is the heel height. and yes to keep a flat consistent roof. but contractors cut their first rafter, test it then mark it as a template rafter and flush the top edges and trace the template ontop of the rest to make consistant rafters once cut.
@dannailer657
@dannailer657 Год назад
@@Electric_City_RC I have heard the term heel height used also height above plate and stand. It depends on what area of the country who you are working for or with. Eather way it is critical this dimension is the same on all commons. The first rafter is used as a pattern for the rest. Most carpenters will layout and cut a tail pattern using the common dimensions.

So basically that patented Swanson diamond is useless if you're calculating in your wall sheathing right? If you're adding the wall sheathing then you need an additional 7/16" so it's a 3-15/16" instead of 3-1/2" seat cut or if your outside wall is 2x6 instead of 2x4 then you need a 5-1/2" or 5-15/16" seat cut.
@survivalistor6195
@survivalistor6195 Год назад
@@Eger118877 it's not 100% useless, it's a good scribe point, but yeah, it's cliché
@joshuarunyan2516

The birds mouth is determined by the heel.height. which varies. The 3.5 mark is to scribe out beyond the birds mouth to create a 3.5 wide tail on the rafter

The outside edge are degree numbers. 1-89 and the outside edges being 0 or 180 (same plane line) and 90° angles. When you step up to the next set of numbers (Toward the fulcrum of the square) you have you "common" numbers which are offset by a few degrees each and are your common slopes and angles. The one example in this video is a common 7/12. It's always over 12. This means that your degrees or slope would be a 7 inch rise over 12 inches. Hopefully that helps. The guy that made this video seems to want to impress unknowing individuals while also being a terrible teacher.

I get your plumb cut on the 7 , and lining up the diamond to get your birdsmouth , but what dictates the angle when you pivoted off the botton of the rafter other than that it looking absolutely square ?
@Ptarmigancirque
@Ptarmigancirque Год назад
By lining up the plumb line inside the diamond, you are creating a perpendicular line 3 1/2" long, no matter what angle your plumb cut is. In theory, it will always give you a 90, give or take a little, since it's only going to be so bang on with such a little diamond to line up with. Close enough for framing though. Big time saver.

Wish it was that easy. Houses i build have wood overhangs 16in and 12in, walls different heights, windows tuck under the overhang that’s stepped out 4 in for brick. When cutting rafters you have to take into consideration what you need for a heel height,then if that will leave you enough tail to nail the overhang into. Sometimes you don’t get full 3 1/2 in bearing.
