Should you upgrade? Here is a speed test between the Chromecast 1st generation vs the 2nd generation. So is it really worth to upgrade? In my opinion if you already have the 1st generation there is really no need to upgrade. However if you are deciding between the Chromecast 1 or 2 Id personally go with chromecast 2 since it is only like $5 to $10 more.

I have tested Gen 1 and Gen 2 on different hardware casting. if you have a aging phone/lower spec for casting Gen 1 is a must .. Gen 2 is pushing too hard on older and buffering getting hot ... but from a new better hardware its okay for a better image. I casted browsing and youtube using a Galaxy s5 to test . and Gen 1 was clear winner for the device . instant picture/video without buffering and allaround solid . Gen 2 heated up the phone and started buffering , audio problems and much more.

I upgraded to the second generation, chromecast 2. I am so happy i did. It's better in every way. Chromecast 2 is so much faster. I now don't have any buffering at all. Totally worth the upgrade.

Did I hear that gen 1 was only 2.4G, whereas gen 2 could connect to 5G wifi?

I think the video upload is a bit arbitrary. It may have to do with the encoding of the video. If you don't test with the same video, the results aren't really accurate People can export videos using "fast startup" by lowering the video bitrate. Also, bitrate in general is a huge factor. A 1080p video with a 50Mbps bitrate is going to load a lot slower than one with 8Mbps.

I have the Amazon fire box. So far it's pretty fast. I figured the fire box would be faster then the fire stick.
