The continuation of Gold to GC with Ray. Speed and playing faster in Rocket League is an important mechanics/skill to learn in Rocket League. Rocket League has a lot of nuances but faster aerials, faster recoveries and mechanics are paramount to victory. Today we go over speed drills like powersliding, boost management, wall to aerial, air dribble defense, and even some dribbling and flicks. Make sure to watch the series and get better at Rocket League with Ray on his road to grand champ!

This has to be one of the best rocket league series on RU-vid right now. It’s the perfect mix of entertaining and educational. You explaining these concepts to someone who is actually a lower rank is genius. We get to watch how you train him and how he practices, we get to watch his progression, and you know that what you’re saying makes sense because you are coaching someone in real time. Genius idea for a series from all angles, keep up the good work.

Ray, this is so good! Even though it can be frustrating, finding yourself failing a drill means that you are pushing yourself at the edges of your current ability. Keep at it because this kind of practice leads to the fastest skill growth!
@chabib23
@chabib23 2 года назад
100% it is also important to remember that the gains you see when you start training come a lot faster because they are low hanging fruit. You will see the biggest improvements from mastering basic fundamentals. The higher up you get the longer it takes to see the results of your training. Additionally progress is not a consistent upward line, it is a series of peaks and valleys. What is important is that your current start is at a higher state than your start point.

Hey CBell and Ray! This series is great! I’m still learning a lot of this stuff as well but my “ah ha” moment when learning some dribble basics is that there is two different types of braking in rocket league. If you hit brakes while holding gas it does a soft brake and if you hit brake while NOT holding gas it is a more abrupt heavy brake. Not knowing this made me so frustrated learning dribbles because I started so slow that when I would touch the brake without the gas, my car would almost completely stop. So just a tip for anyone reading this really, experiment with brake and gas/brake and see if that helps your dribble control a bit!

Towards the end of this video, you were really getting at a point that I feel a lot of players and coaches miss: taking time to let your muscles relax and rejuvenate. Think about it, if you go to the gym and work your arms 5 days in a row, you'll be getting lesser and lesser returns for the work put in because your muscles haven't fully healed. Anecdotally, I've found the same thing happens with me and RL. When I hit those inevitable glass ceilings, I've found that taking a day or two off to play another game is highly beneficial when I return to playing a few days later. The muscle memory has had some time to bake into your hands and neural networks, and the muscles needed for those actions are fresh and ready to go. I know it sounds counter intuitive for the "fastest way to grind rank" mindset but IME, load cycling is something that more serious players need to practice and coaches need to preach.
@Matti_Shakes
@Matti_Shakes 2 года назад
I couldn't agree more. It's weird though. I play rocket league just about every day, for (hopefully) a few hours or so. But when life gets busy and I cant play for a few days, when I play again I get this weird feeling like I've improved by somehow NOT playing. And what you're talking about here is the same thing. There are bad habits we all have in this game, and when trying to learn something new, or a fancy mechanic that changes the way we do things we've done the same way for so long, it's a challenge. We will constantly default to the bad habit, even while consciously doing our best to avoid it. But then, you take a break, and that bad habit is suddenly harder to default to than the new habits we were practicing. I love the psychological side of these types of things, and I find it fascinating how easily it correlates to the comparison to physical exercise you made.
@JoshuaBurniece

I’ve watched an enormous amount of Rocket League videos, and I have to say this is the most intriguing series I have seen. I just hit plat yesterday for the first time and am working toward grand champ. All of the tips you are giving Ray are so beyond helpful for us lower rank players. I’m definitely going to be doing these exercises in my own training sessions! Thanks for the fantastic content, CBell!

I personally feel like this is a really good series. I know you’re trying to get him to GC by Christmas, but I feel you’re trying to go to quick. I feel Ray needs to keep practicing the fundamentals like power shots etc. more and focus on fewer things at a time. The reason he was messing up his dribbles is because he’s focusing on way too many things to learn at once.
@Official_Solok
@Official_Solok 2 года назад
True, but also learning many things at once helps to learn other things faster and more efficiently, sounds like a double edged sword to me. Gain more experience, improve overall mechanics, and improve game sense however, as you mentioned, because hes being exposed to the possibilities and limits too quickly, hes trying to do too much, overestimating his capabilities which is common during these practices, and get mentally and maybe physically frustrated & exhausted. Edit: Im just saying an opposite view from yours, sure short term he will learn slow, long term he is already aware and mechanically good enough to improve further is all im saying.
@Freeze-317
@Freeze-317 2 года назад
@@Official_Solok I completely agree that he’ll improve long term. But I just feel that the ability to 1v1 his son by the end of the year is a goal that he just won’t be able to reach.

CBell, I think it might be beneficial to Ray if you started bringing in other Rocket League coaches to give some useful tips. You're doing a great job teaching him and giving him a tailored program but I know personally, two people can say the same thing in their own way and one message sometimes resonates with the student better. Something like a guest appearance every other episode to keep things fresh and give Ray a new perspective could really help, especially if the guest has experience coaching players. Great stuff man!

CBell, try changing the game speed to 0.5x so Ray will have more time to think about what his fingers should be doing for some of the mechanics. Like in the swimmer laps drill, you can clearly see that he just doesn't know which buttons to press and in which order, so his brain just jams up. If you slow it down he'll have the time to think about what needs to happen. And if even that fails then just brake it down to smaller and smaller pieces. Separate each action and then drill until he gets one step further consistently. Like 1st, with out boost, drive to the wall and jump (stop actions). 2nd With out boost drive to the wall, jump, air roll (stop). 3rd With out boost drive to the wall, jump, air roll, pitch up/down (stop). 4th With out boost drive to the wall, jump, air roll, pitch up/down, land(stop). 5th With out boost drive to the wall, jump, air roll, pitch up/down, wave dash land etc. And then add boost. When ever someone is not getting it, just slow down and break it down to smaller and smaller bits until they get it. Just like when practicing playing an instrument.

Ray is insane hes 46 years old hes plat he learns so quick ray deserves to be ab gc and he has an eye injury god bless ray and wish ray a lot of rocket league luck.This has to be one of the best rocket league series on RU-vid right now. It’s the perfect mix of entertaining and educational. You explaining these concepts to someone who is actually a lower rank is genius.

I enjoy watching you getting into the nitty-gritty with Ray… I’m gold and it’s nice to hear pointers that are more practical at my level.

Hey CBell. I have Seen myself having Problems with the Air control and also Not being able to keep the ball on my Car when Dribbling. The Most useful Tip i got from some RU-vid Video was that you Just do Not Push the left Stick all the way to the left or right. So gently Touch the Stick only a Fee degrees Into the direction. This way He should Stop wobbling left and right or Up and down all the time so That He does Not have to correct Each move He Makes in the Air. That Makes flying in the Air way easier. Hope that helps and he can implement that in Future Sessions. Wish you all the best. Cheers from Germany

These videos are fantastic. When I started I sweat to diamond super hard. Now I'm plat 1. After watching the drills you give Ray, I realized, I don't do any of this. As of this video I'm back to diamond 2, and trying everything I see here.
