The factory matt storm grey wasn't my first choice when I ordered my Speed Twin 12 months ago, so I thought I'd dip my toes in the world of custom paint jobs.

Great color choice! I have a 650i in that color with the “champagne” leather. One of my favorite combo’s (although the light leather can show marks easily). Great video.

Looks amazing! I would say to just get the whole tank covered in ppf. Some paint protections films have a self healing quality where some heat heals the scratches on their own. So that should take care of any scratches from zippers or your knees rubbing on the tank while preserving the paint beneath. Also thanks for sharing the price!!

Thanks! Good idea about the film, I’ll look into it👍😊

I tried covering my speed twin's tank in PPF, but the specialist who would do the job explained due to the form of the tank it would not be possible to have a "clearn" look without cuts on the protection film. I think the best option would really just to apply ceramic coating and be careful with the jacket zippers.
@RocketMan_Moto
@RocketMan_Moto 2 года назад
If the piece of film is small enough (about the size of the factory tank pad from Triumph), then it's relatively easy to fit to the tank's shape.

In Australia we have a few options for paint protective film including a brand called XPEL. A ‘self healing’ PPF. A bit on the expensive side but if you coated the whole tank, you not only wouldn’t have the ‘unsightly’ cut out lines for the protective film but it would save the tank from not only zipper scratches but also knee rubbing on the sides and any small rocks and other debris flicking up and hitting the tank.

Wow, this is absolutely gorgeous and much improved. And that’s coming from someone who loves the factory Matte Storm Grey. I just bought a 2022 Speed Twin in Red Hopper a few weeks ago. I’m not a huge fan of the color, but that’s all they had. Anyway, now that I see what yours looks like painted, I’ll probably be going that route too. I have 2019 VW GTI in Night Blue Metallic that looks very similar to this color, and I think I’ll go with that for mine when I do it (after doing a bunch of other upgrades on my list first). Very nice! I have a 2022 Mat Grey Speed Twin coming next month from my local dealer who hasn’t been able to get any other colors this year. Thanks for the inspiration in a repaint color! I must admit a bias though as my R1250RT and my 540i are Carbon Black!. I’d suggest reusing the Union Jack knee pads but hand painting the deep grooves in it the Carbon Black color to help them blend with the tank more. My wife and I enjoy your excellent videos! Keep up the great work!

@cperine39
@cperine39 2 года назад
Great ideas you have had and the bike is gorgeous! IMO I’d leave the wheels alone as they are. I like the original color fenders, front and back as well, against the BMW carbon black paint. I love the headlight bezel the way you painted it to match the tank. I, myself, would not do anything more for protection on the tank. I think that getting it scuffed up or tiny scratches will only add to the patina and character, much like a long-time played guitar. If I were to do anything more at all, I think the gold Ohlins forks would look beautiful against the paint work that you have already done. These bikes have been hard to come by for model year 2022 and to have one is to be very fortunate. You not only have one, you have now a very rare, beautiful one. I would keep that in the garage and cherish it as it is now a valuable collector’s item. Cheers to you on your fine videos that you create and on your designs with this amazing bike. Ride safe. Regards from Washington state, USA.

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement, Charlie. I think you may be right about the rear mudguard - several people have said the factory silver one would look better, so I may put it back and see how the bike looks. you could always have the bike wrapped with PPF like how cars are wrapped. Some of these films are also self healing. In terms of other mods, personally I might fit a small aluminium screen in front of the clocks. I would also look for a sear with a raised hump look at the back (or possibly look for a plastic rear seat cowl for that cafe racer look). Defending if you wanted to go full café racer or not, maybe lower bars / clip-ons. I would also change the rear mud guard to an aluminium one to match the front. Also, I would change the exhaust tip for something slightly prettier. As for wheels, maybe some spoked wheels.

I really like the new paint job, congrats! The original black is a bit dull, this new color really suits the speed twin! Regarding further mods, the one I like the most on my speed twin are the factory optional LED side markers, they suit the bike well and delete the rear brake light that gets replaced by a nice aluminium cover. Ohlins gold suspension would like great as well, I would go for the Ohlins and only after would consider changing (or not) the wheel color.

@@RocketMan_Moto Sir actually I was wondering if it is possible to get the scrambler 1200 xc’s led headlight onto the speed twin. I have been investigating this for a very long time and the dealers near me don’t have that led headlight since the scrambler 1200 xc isn’t sold here. I went for the Evo and find them attractive and very sticky, which works for me. Would add a picture, but can’t work out how to do so in RU-vid comments. BTW I got to try a 2022 model and definitely noticed a positive difference compared with my 2020 model. The paint job seems to me to be very good value, and surely much cheaper than you'd get in the UK. I would have gone for metallic green - the best colour for classic Triumphs, IMO. The wheels have to be bronze, if you don't like black. My CB650R looks great with that combo. I'm not a fan of carbon fibre bling. I'd be happier with cheaply replaceable high quality plastic, with alnost no weight penalty. I still can't believe that Aprilia decided that having 2 differently coloured wheels on their RS 660 was a good idea. You could try that: Pink and orange. Ha Ha. Ride safely.

More gold that does not match other gold trim will spoil the unified look you're trying to achieve. Not a fan of the look of carbon fiber. Be careful, mate. Make your ride too pretty and you'll have to leave it in the living room atop the coffee table, then only ride you're other bike. Oregon,USA.
