GH5 or BMPCC4K are great and affordable cameras with amazing features. The only drawback is their small M43 image sensor that makes getting shallow DOF and wide angle shots more difficult. That can be easily fixed by using a speedbooster, focal reducing, lens adapter. ⬇️More INFO⬇️

Thanks for this. My only criticism is the placement of the text at top AND bottom of the screen means constantly looking up and down the picture to see what settings have changed exactly. Which then makes it more difficult to focus on the image itself.. A better and more easily consumed option would be to have TWO lines of text at the bottom. Thank you anyway though. 👍🏽

Hi Tom I have seen some of your videos before and am quite impressed with your presentation and knowledge. I have been researching Metabones Speed Booster for my BMPCC 4k camera and have been somewhat confused. Thanks to you, you have answered some questions that I had. For instance which one to get and what it will do. Your presentation and test pictures cleared some things up for me. Thanks so much for you help. Perfect, exactly what I was looking for! - I was sceptical for the Viltrox aswell, I don't see the point in buying expensive optics and then try to get away with buying a cheap glass to stick in the middle.

Thanks for this. Helpful. I know my answer now - the 0.64x because for production shoots I often use the Alexa Mini in open gate mode, which has the same 1.29x crop factor! Incidentally, if you use the Alexa Mini in 16x9 mode it has the same 1.43x crop as the 0.71x with the BMPCC 4k

Great test, very valuable. Its a shame they aren't as sharp and adjustable like the Viltrox. Specially at 5 times the cost. But currently its the only once that support IS on all Tamron lenses and 0.64 is very tasty, so it is what it is.

I started out with the R.J. (Jinrong) Lens Turbo as an alternative to the expensive Metabones. Then everybody was on about some brandless one that was very cheap on eBay (Roxsen I think, wasn't very good). Then Zhongyi/ZY Optics/Mitakon came along with their Lens Turbo, which probably is the best value one out there with their series II. We saw Kipon collaborate with the guys of IB/E Optics, Bavaria, Germany on those BAVEyes ones. They didn't really come out great in tests. I always avoided EF lenses because they required the expensive Metabones Speedbooster with electronics, so I mainly got all lenses in Nikon F-mount with mechanical AF. These days there's also Viltrox with the EF-M2 adapter. I think like Zhongyi, these are a very good value proposition as well. Of course Metabones still aces it regarding optical quality.

My main issue with the lens turbo II is the extremely short throw of the aperture. Some lenses it won't open up fully and you have to use the lenses aperture ring. The Metabones is better but not 3x the price better. The real advantage is with the .64x Booster. Then I can use my full frame glass and even some Apsc too.

Hey Tom I got my camera last year around November. I been using the XL adapter the whole time and I do love the image size and extra information I am getting from it. Have you noticed degrading on the edge of images though when using the metabones and does that change if you use the Ultra? You have both and not sure if you noticed the degrading, but when I tested some lenses out on a flat focus chart I did notice the edges falling off. I am sure it doesnt matter much in moving video but was curious if you noticed this as well?

Tom - enjoyed the video comparisons. I have a BMPCC4K as well as a Metabones ULTRA 0.71. The Metabones speed booster is about 2 years old. The adapter works perfectly with the original BMPCC - 1080P camera - both Focus Assist and Aperture Adjust (on that camera) work with Canon EF glass. I have been back and forth with the Metabones staff, regarding my adapter's inability to pass the BMPCC4K "Focus Assist" button signal through to my EF lenses, although the Aperture Adjust on my BPCC4K does work with my adapter to control my EF lenses iris. (I should note that Focus Assist and Aperture Adjust buttons with all my native M43 lenses from Olympus of Panasonic function perfectly with my BMPCC4K.) The only EF lens in your video is the Sigma 18-35mm. Do you only use manual focus on the Sigma ? I'd be extremely interested in you seeing your Sigma lens respond, when using the "Focus Assist" button on the BMPCC4K. Thanks Much, from Houston TX

I don't think there are any M43 cameras with a mirror, and the sensor is the same distance from the mount for all M43. Some cameras might have a slightly thicker sensor stack, but what might be more of a problem is cameras with physical shutters. You often have to calibrate the Viltrox adapters to get infinite focus, but all you have to do is turn the optical element in the correct direction until you can focus at infinite. Saying you get a full frame look with the Metabones XL is a bit of a stretch. It has a 1.28 crop factor, which is closer to Nikon APS-C than Full Frame. The Metabones Ultra seems sharper than the others to my eyes, but it's a bit tricky to compare with the XL since there is a different field of view.

I love my pocket 4k and have personally been happy with it but I feel like I am getting a very small soft look to it due to the metabones. Why is nobody talking about a good stabilized 24-70mm paired with an XL on the Pocket 4K? To me that would be the most workable run and gun combo of all. You get fast decent range, and you get IS which is so important most of the time! I really want to know how something like the Tamron G2 would look on the Pocket 4K.

Stargaze79 I was just looking into it this morning. So let’s do little math, canon full frame 24-70 is about 1000£ used. Tamron 24-70 FF anywhere between 500£-750£ used. Now with the “FF” metabones speed booster you still get 1.28 crop.so we are technically talking about 31-89mm lens. Weather sealed, IS, and due to the speed booster you go down from F2.8 down to 1.8. Compare it to sigma 18-35 which you can get around 400£ used, you will get 24-46. Cheaper, faster and amazing optics. But no weather sealing and no IS. I think it will come down to the personal preference of each shooter. But then look on sigma 17-50 f2.8. Super cheap, with speed booster you will get 24-70 with F1.8. Canon 17-55 f2.8 can be bought used for around 300£or even less. Better build an range 24-78 wit SB F goes down to F1.8. I guess that would be the best combo for me.

Thanx for video! I figured out that mine Speedbooster XL adapter for Nikon lenses makes final 1.3x crop-factor of BMPCC4k, comparing to Sony-a7s2 full frame. (just compare similar angle of view with different focal length). That looks like the actual adapter's magnification not 0.64, but 0.69. Or maybe I mistaken? Did you compare yours with full-frame sensor?

i disassembled both original and ultra they both have equal electronics (equal elecronic scheme) so the differens is in optical scheme and firmware.

I have both Viltrox 0.71x 1st version (newer version is considered to be better) and Metabones. For me.. optically the Metabones was slightly better... the Viltrox II version is apparently closed the gap between the two. For my Viltrox 0.71x (1st version) the problem was the back optic was just screwed on any old place and the set screw wasn’t set.. a little trial and error and I got infinity focus and everything worked fine. I would say Metabones at least got it close in assembly before shipping vs Viltrox just spinning it on. One assumes both are better now. But now that I’m on a BMPCC4K instead of a super 35 with MFT mount I’m missing my corner to corner full frame lenses. the 0.64 doesn’t get the BMPCC4K to full frame but gets it close... I think to 1.24 crop or something like that vs my super 35 with 0.71 that gets me to 1.06x which is as full frame as one can get. My .71x on my BMPCC4K is maybe a 1.36 crop? so the0.64 is wider... closer to full frame but isn’t. But it might be enough for older vintage or recreation lenses like Lensbaby Twist 60 or Lomography Degaurotype Achromatic. ??? (Get all the twisty corners).... any of those lenses laying around your office to put on and give a whirl with the swirl?

Hi, tom. i think its a no brainer to pick the 0.64. you said you can only use it with full frame lenses but that isnt really true. i have a bunch of lenses and the only 2 non full frame lenses which are the sigma 18-35 and the tokina 11-16mm. If you use the 0.64 adapter all you need to do is zoom in to 20mm on the sigma and 12 mm on the tokina and thats where the vignette cut off is. with this said you achieve .3 more stops of light with the same focal length compared to the .71 vs the .64 here is the math for the sigma lens sigma 18-35 - 0.71 adatper at 18mm (18x .71 =12.78 x 1.9= 24.282) sigma 18-35 0.64 adapter at 20mm (20x.64 = 12.8 x 1.9 = 24.32) and i achieved an additional .3 more light. also the 0.64 isn't quite full frame comparison more like a aps-h- its actually a 1.22 crop which is still pretty amazing with a 4/3 sensor. What you just said... exactly why I had ordered the XL. More people should be open to the XL with their BMPCC4Ks... its only drawback is that it may touch the sensor/mirror in other cameras.

How much penalty in sharpness do each of the metabones adapters give you. I need to order a new lens for it pronto but im not sure yet if I should get an metabones adapters or shoot on native lenses. But in like to keep the camera as tiny as possible as this little puppy is going to be the little brother to red cameras. Im of course curios how it would be to make the bmpcc 4k into a full frame since I dont have any adapters for the red cameras or the monstro for that matters. Just got the bmpcc 4k and need to fit it out so this video was interesting. Thanks. By the way, does the tap to focus work good? I mean as long your subject does not move after you taped the focus?

I strongly disagree that the Viltrox EF-M2 is bad, it´s great (starter kit) for the price (120€)!! But I do agree that you cannot compare it against an 800€ Metabones!

Works great specially with a speedbooster adapters like the ones I show in this video. It's just like using a super35mm or full frame camera but one that shoots in RAW and is much smaller.

@@towermedia5940 Sony has a very shallow sensor (thats whySony cameras can take ANY lens with proper adapter) and so they have to make lenses with a bigger barrel inside the lens before the first glass element. And in the BMPCC4k case, you gotta use a SpeedBooster to have any use of the full frame lenses so theres already this big space between the sensor and first glass element. I was looking forward to BMPCC6K because of the bigger sensor, but my interest went down the toilet when I saw they made it with a Canon mount...which is pretty much made for canon lenses because of the deep sensor... Sooo I feel your pain bor (I just bought a 4k version over the 6k one).

hey tom love from india I want your help that I am not able to decide the speedboster for bmpcc4k because my lenses are 18 to 35 and 50 to 100 sigma cine zoom t 2.0 super 35 and 1st I want to know that 1 . if I use 0.64 meta ones adapter with my lenses will it and my final output I will get the full frame shallow dept of field or not , or what out put I will get with the 0.64 adapter with my lenses with bmpcc4k will you recomend me this adapter for my lenses because I want to shoot a low budget Bollywood film with this setup

The new ones are basically sharper. But won't work on any other camera later down the line.

I liked your comparison of lens adapters for BMPCC4K. After a lot of research, I bought a new BMPCC4K, Metabones speedbooster ultra 0.71x and Sigma 18-35mm f 1.8 EF Art lens. But I am not able to access the Iris function in my camera menu or with the iris wheel on the front of the camera. I have tested the camera and Metabones with different EF lenses. Sigma 50-100mm f 1.8 EF Art lens, Canon 50 mm prime, Zeiss 50mm prime. None of the lens works with the Metabones. I cant access AF functions as well as Iris function in my camera. I can manually focus the lens. But Iris function is really disappointing and am stuck with the set up. BMPCC4K camera works perfectly with any MFT lens. Iris function and AF function works fine with MFT lens. I have updated the latest firmware on the camera and the Metabones and have done all the tips given my Metabones for this problem. None of them works. Can you suggest any ways to solve this issue?

Mine works fine on my camera? Could be a faulty unit. Is it an old version? I hear they have software updates as well, mine I bought end of last year so it is pretty new.

what best one to get if u want to turn a lens i.e 200mm to a 400mm lens ? like Panasonic is 2x crop ? as it is but your looking to get better AF performance ? with good adapter which one to get?

Tom, this is an old video, so you probably won't reply. But do the Canon EF-S STM lenses work on either of these adapters? I actually have an electronic Metabones EF/MFT without a speedbooster, and it works very well with the STM lenses---I can do quick AF shot with the back button focus and finish the shot using the manual focus override and it works very well---as does the in-lens stabilization. Still need to know if these lenses will work with the .71 speedbooster.

Thanks for the video Tom. I've been debating between the .64 and the .71 as my BMPCC 4k is finally on the way from B&H. Question, given that I shoot most of my A cam stuff on the Ursa Mini 4.6, would the .71 (on the BMPCC 4k) be a better choice in matching footage from the bigger camera's Super 35 sensor, or can I achieve very similar looks from the .64 to cut with the UM footage?

I think the XL is more about the glass. If you have full frame glass the XL is better. Some Apsc glass still works on the XL but you will get vignette at some focal lengths. I personally have both the ultra and xl. I tend to use the XL more often but I mostly have full frame glass.

Thanks @@Holtenstein Yeah I forgot to mention that I have both full frame and EFS Canon lenses so that's another reason I haven't chosen yet. I'd obviously like to be able to use both type lenses but that extra frame space on the .64 is something that would nice to have too.

Since you have both full frame and APSC lenses and since you already use the URSA Mini which is APSC size sensor, i would recommend getting the 0.71x . That's what I use and I also have 2 URSA Mini Pros that I use along side my BMPCC4K

Is there any difference between the t speed boosters and these cine lock ones? www.metabones.com/products/details/MB_SPEF-m43-BT6 Or is it just the cine lock ones are stronger so you can attach heavy cinema primes.

Was this test before the most recent dedicated BMPCC4K version of the Ultra 0.71 was released? The reason I ask is because I noticed the Ultra 0.71 you are showing, has a short back near the sensor, whereas the recent one I seen on B@H has BMPCC4K stamped on it and has a longer back like the .64 you are showing.

Thank you for doing this. I couldn't imagined the vignetting on those shots. The lens selection with x0.61 version is ... limited.

what would have been interesting would have been sigma 18-35 with/without SB so for example 18mm@f1.8 without SB vs 25mm@f2.5 with .71x SB vs 28mm@f2.8 with .64x SB. they all have a similar equivalent 18mm/f1.8 depth of field but the image should be different on chromatic aberration, sharpness and contrast. i think the test without SB will have the best chromatic aberration but with lower contrast, for corner sharpness i think the best will also be without SB for these wide apertures. for center contrast and sharpness i guess the 0.64x will be the best. above f5.6 all these differences in CA; contrast ans sharpness should become unnoticeable.
