The Army Painter sent me the Speedpaint 2.0 Mega Set, Games Workshop sent me the second range of Contrast Paints months ago so I had to go and buy the Xpress Colour range right? Had to! In this video we paint up some Dark Krakens Space Marines and attempt to answer the question of which one is right for me?

The Speedpaint 2.0 is for someone like me. Full-time job, kids, maybe have an hour or so a night to paint. Right now I go model by model, but if I wanted to speedpaint, I could paint 10-20 models one color at a time and be done with 20 of them in 3 days (3 colors) vs. 3 models . I think the mistake with Speedpaint is thinking about it as a professional paint range vs. what The Army Painter always states, helping things get painted so they get on the table faster. I say this as someone who has used very little contrast paint of any brand, but own some large horde armies.

When you accidentally get speedpaints onto a primed area of the model it might make sense to rewet and remove the smudge with a wet brush. Use the non permanent quality to your advantage instead of trying to cover the smudge with primer

I've been looking at the Speedpaint 2.0. And What I like is that even if you do want to use the paints to get a solid base/wash it doesn't stop you from adding other mids or stronger edge highlights, it's just a way to speed up the initial slog of doing the base/wash/re ap mid tone.

they are best used in conjunction with other tech. Like cutting them down to do pseudo-glazing that takes a fraction of the time, but still looks amazing when you add your traditional layering highlights on top. they are great at shading in stuff because of how the pigment works. this is the thing contrast is best for IMO. pushing pigment to an area you want to be shaded. It's essentially the new part of "slap chop". The whole "underpainting/shading" has been around for a very long time in mini painting, but with contrast paints you can now direct the pigment way better than you could by just using washes and inks. means if you can lay down a nice dry brushed Zenithal type effect (but very easy to get wrong and end up chalky, I'd advice watching Byron from Artis Opus to get an idea on moisture control, as this is. This makes or breaks the step) then you use the contrasts to build your shadows from the dark points. you end up with a mini that is deceiving to the eye. For me this is true speed painting. learning a combination of tech that makes minis look better than they should for how long has been spent on them. Honestly though that dry brush stage is so imporant if you want to trick the eye though. if you can tell it's a dry brush (chalky etc) then you just register it as a slap chop, but if you get the transitions smooth then it looks like it was glazed. really works. also the other trick is not going black and white, and actually going with colours instead. like if you want a sickly, nurgle yellow/green you would start with zandri dust, and then dry brush on Orgyn camo. that way you have much more space to work in shadows with the brown, and the Ogryn camo is a nice, sick green with a lot of yellow in it for a base for your highlights. then when you apply your sepia wash (or probably like a nazdreg yellow contrast with a bit more brown in it, not sure, if you can cut a sepia wash from contrast it would be really nice) you get natural transitions starting. You would then go in with a medium bone shade with a much lighter dry brush to pick out the highlights. you don't leave it there though. you go with a lighter shade (krieg khaki is good as it has some of that yellow/green to it) and you do some layering highlights as well. it's about combining the different tech. Sorry if you are really advanced (i have no way of knowing this) but I just felt like sharing some info. maybe someone reads this who could do with the tips. I can't iterate enough how important getting that smooth zenithal with the dry brush down is though. if it looks chalky, it's going to show through. this can be be used for more grim dark paint schemes though, where you are going to be doing a lot of stippling anyway.

Keep in mind that there have been reports of Speedpaint 2.0 cracking, and there seem to be a few reasons for this - heat and humidity, how you prime your models, how much paint you apply, and even the paints not being thin enough have been cited as causes.

@D00M3R_MAVS
@D00M3R_MAVS 10 месяцев назад
@@michaelbrand1173 I thought about selling my citadel, but decided against it because I have a lot of unopened pots and I'd never get a decent price for them. you always get low balled with 2nd hand paint collections, as people will always say "well what you're lying about the pots being full" easier to do in person, but I wouldn't sell them online. also most citadel paint is good, it's only really their colours with a lot of white in them ,that suck. so their bone colours, their whites etc, get vallejo or something or AK interactive who honestly make the best paint IMO. I sold some Citadel paints in like 2012 and I got seriously low balled on them, selling them on ebay. lost a lot of money on them. I ended up buying most of them again as well, so wouldn't do that again. Just keep your paints, if you are into this hobby long time, you will use it all. I now have around 500 pots of paint, around 3 boxes full of citadel as well. Just use AK for your light shades, or Vallejo. I use Vallejo game colour for my bone colours, but I use AK for my white. Vallejo model colour white is good as well though.

I have 20ish contrast paints, and the complete sets of speedpaint 1.0 and xpress colour (though i haven't really used the xpress colour much yet) I'll say this. The correct choice for EVERYONE right now is speedpaint and/or xpress colour. Becuase of 1 reason- competition. We all need to get behind variations of contrast paints so other companies other than GW are incentivised to continue to develop and expand their ranges. If we can use vallejo and army painter options now, in 2-5 years time we'll all have all of the choices and can pick and choose how we want.

I'm with you and looking forward to the 2.0 set. I do agree with his point that if you're trying to speed paint a single mini in one session, the dry time could be a pain. Forgot one of the big benefits of the dry time though, is wet blending is super easy with them. I think the Vallejo will also have that benefit.
@haukke

I agree and did pre-order the 2.0 set. it is a lose/lose for army painter if the drying time was shorter or longer it would make a difference when most so called painters do not already like the paints they make. i personally love them, but i am not a youtuber or influencer i just like painting minis.

@@haukke Ive seen someone use a paint wash over dried (not 2 hours) speedpaint, and it seemed to do the trick. I have both Express and AP 1.0 sets and I found that the Express is really weak and actually isn’t as smooth as the AP. I also love that you can blend AP because of the longer drying time (the Express in my opinion dries too fast to do anything, the minute I try to « move » the paint, it leaves a mark). I was really hopeful when I saw that Vallejo came out with a contrast paint but I find myself mixing it with a bit of Speedpaint. This gives it some of the properties of AP as well as diminishing the reactivation time. As for Citadel, the price is horrible and I think that the new contrast paint are more like normal paint, no contrast at all! Sorry for the rant, it is just my opinion.

Great video, I found this much more informative than a lot of the other speed paint videos. Im in the process of trying to choose a range to go with and everyone will be different but I really like the look of the vallejo xpress range, the lighter colour seems to me to give the best value range that would work with a nice zenithil airbrush. The others although nice are just too dark for me although I do see a lot of people saying speed paint 2.0 is better so I'm still undecided.

I suspect the Speed Paint silver not quite being what was expected vs Iron Warriors base, is because they are for different purposes. Iron Warriors is more heavily pigmented and meant to cover flat and opaque. The Speed Paint silver is meant to be slightly translucent, so is best used over other colours (or mixed with other Speed Paints for interesting colour fun). It's not meant to cover up colours below as an opaque paint might. It does mean it's less generally useful, more a "special effect" type paint. I still go for opaque metallics when I'm doing them for the most part.

If you are using the Army Painter Holy White, it needs to be shaken for a long time and then thinned with speed paint medium for it to produce a good result. I then layer over the top with white paint to make sure the highlights are white. It can take a few (thin) coats of paint to get the highlights looking bright enough.

I enjoy very much using the AP Speedpaints and "abusing" the reactivation factor to blend, get rid of splodges and mistakes, and do weird color contrasts (no pun intended) difficult to achieve with other brands. Plus, their properties work kinda... better than GW Contrast paints on flatter surfaces - sorry Warhipster, I do not have your magical hand dealing with those large armor panels. Yeah, you need to seal them down with airbrush/spraycan varnish. Bummer. Otherwise, regular Contrast paints have an excellent range and once you get used to some quirks (Shyish Purple I'm looking at you and you silly brother Dark Angels Green), you get great results, even though you have to plan more accurately the paintscheme and steps involved. The reliability is offset by the less freeform approach, so to speak.

I know I'm late to reply, but I didn't see this mentioned anywhere in the comments. Any of these paints will have their drying time change dependent on how humid it is in your painting area. This might be affecting your 2hr dry time. I wait 30mins at most with speedpaints 2.0 and I can put more layers on top. I do live in a very dry location (10-30% humidity throughout the year and that's with a humidifier in my room).

the new vallejo ones are supposed to great. I've seen entire Imperial Guard tanks painted in them (at least the majority of it, some details like metals were not) and it looked great. I didn't think it was possible to really paint flat plastic areas with a speed paint like contrast, but you can do it with the xpress paints. I'm not sure if they are just different as not used them yet, but I love what I see. I really like contrast as well though, but I use them to cut glazes and washes with mostly. You can use them to do quick face shading and bone and stuff like that as well though, they are very versatile tools that go beyond the marketing (speed paints) even the best painters have started to work these paints into their schemes more and more. You might as well use everything you have access to though. You never know what might be right for project until you try it out.

Honestly, just take what you need from various lines. I’ve been priming with Army Painter, slapchopping with Vallejo, and painting on top with Speedpaint 2.0 for beautiful results. Then a couple layers and highlights with Citadel. Never once have I had to “take a break” and wait for drying nor have I gotten reactivation. But I’m not a big fan of the bronze and silver metallics. The good is actually quite nice! But I just use citadel for silver and copper and even black. I consider myself a slow-ish painter but even this method has me finishing infantry in approx 1hr.

I like speed paint, heck I like all the paints, but I just don't really end up doing loads of layers, sometimes I'll put a base layer on and paint it afterwards, I'm no serious painter, barely competent enough to do a good job. I do sometimes mix my paints, not just between speed paints, I'll use other types just depending on what I can reach from my chair. Sometimes it'll be a mix of contrast paint or antethesis paint by warcolor, they all work differently and do a good job if their own job, don't like the look of speed metallic paint though I'd have to try thrm before I can judge properly

Are you using a really lite grey primer, what value is it? In the like it looks like it's about an 8.5 value but that could be from either the cam, or the lighting you're using. If so why not use a value 5, 5.5, or 6?

So my thoughts after using them a while. I am in the camp of speedpaints 2.0, everything but the metals I can use pretty much like contrast paints, find a better match to the color I am looking for, and have more consistent and easier working time. On top of this I am in the boonies and the internet is the only way for me to reliably get paints and having them available on Amazon just makes it accessible quickly (for internet). For all metals I precoat in duraluminum by vallejo before putting down any metallic contrast, it is an extra step but produces much better metal colors including if I want a green metallic sword for some reason. In regards to price vallejo is the best but are so difficult to find. Speedpaints are much cheaper than contrast paints though especially considering the larger amount of paint per bottle. Lastly my personal gripe is Citadels pots, everyone else has gone away from this for good reason, it is not the ideal way to do things especially if mixing. With Speedpaint 2.0 and pro acryl and even Vallejo game color, I very rarely find myself using Citadel any more, they just seem dated in comparison to the newer lines. I am interested in trying out the new fanatic line and seem how well army painter does, not because I want to replace my favorites, but have more options is simply better. Good review, thank you for putting in the time to make this video.

Still the undisputed king of metalics is the Vallejo Metal Color line. I have tried just about all the hobby paint lines version of metalics and they all fall short! That being said looks like they are only halfway there with the Express color line.

Great video. My bottles of Speed Paint 2.0 all say 2.0 on them. But I noticed in the video that the bottles of speed paint used here do not have that designation. They just say Speed Paint... I am not positive that the paint that was used for the Army Painter test was actually Speed Paint 2.0. Maybe 2.0 has been around long enough now that they've dropped the 2.0 designation? I don't know and I am not accusing anyone of anything. Either I am wrong and Speed Paint is now just Speed Paint and 2.0 has been dropped from the label or an honest mistake was made. I've used GW, AP, and just started using Vallejo (contrast, speed, xpress). My biggest problem with speed paint in general is that occasionally I'll come across a color that's simply too opaque and all of the dry brushing and/or zenithal priming I've done gets covered up in a solid wall of color. I've started having a test model on standby and I try out any new paint first. I've found exceptional colors from all three brands. I've been painting for a couple of years now so I am still not very good but am getting better. These kinds of videos help a great deal. Thanks for the video.

Speed paint is quite simply for doing units. The drying time in between won't cut it for single models. Unless you have a means to dry the paint faster? Looking at the purples, I preferred the Speedpaint tone. Contrast looks too dark, but I'm assuming they can be made lighter based on application? The Xpress requires multiple coats to my eyes. This defeats the purpose of speed painting. But for glazing techniques, might be the way to go? But glazing is an abbreviated process but not to the point of fast painting. I do historical miniatures, too. For smaller scales, I would want the Speedpaints. The Xpress looks very much like stain painting to me. Which is using thinned base colors. It doesn't add value to me for smaller scales. Contrast will require additional highlights, this is another step. I think the Speedpaint allows you to highlight or not highlight? The Speedpaint metallic seems to be a mixed bag? Honestly, I prefer black undercoat, a midtone, and a highlight. More time spent, but the metallic colors pop much more. So it looks like we are still waiting for a metallic solution? I agree. For one-off models, Contrast is the way to go if absolute speed is the priority. For most of my painting, I will use both. But Speedpaints seem to work quite well as intended, if you can wait longer between coats. I paint mostly in units. The smallest would be 8 figures. Usually, 16 to 24 is the most common for infantry; 8 to 12 for cavalry. For regimented uniforms, one color jacket or pants on each figure. At 28mm, probably 5 minutes a figure or less. So, with Speedpaints, I would be looking at some additional wait times. I do not have the stamina I once had, and I doubt that I would only paint 2 to 3 hours. So maybe the wait times aren't a factor for me? I believe a varnish coat will seal the Speedpaint too?

Sorry, it's a bit of an artist (illustrator) thing, my brain immediately goes "AESTHETICALLY PLEASING, WANNA STUDY AND DRAW" haha! Also really appreciate the way you point out biases in the beginning and approach this from the standpoint of individial needs rather than objective superiority.

Great video as ever. The terrific thing is, of course, you don't have to choose. The GW, Vallejo or Army Painter police won't come knocking at your door if you mix and match paints from their brands on the same model. Maybe you want a more pastel shade from the Xpress Colour range for for softer fabrics on a model, but really like a certain shade from a Speedpaint for the armour, and a Contrast paint for the skin. You don't need to invest in the whole range and nail their colours (hah!) to your mast. Pick, choose and use any of them however you want. What a time to be alive.

I’m torn. I am starting to get fed up with citadel range(not tried contrast yet) and don’t really like vajeao. Was thinking of army painter speed, but didn’t know that they took so longer to dry, and worried about reactivation as I didn’t know that was a thing.

Considering the purple: I like contrast paints, they cover nicely, look good, but ironically lack contrast. The Vallejo has contrast, but I found the color lacking. The speedpaint IMHO wins out. The color is rich, and there is lovely contrast. Speedpaint for me. What was the purpose of painting the armor blue before painting it black? Was it to check for re-activation, or to get a better fuller black coverage?

in all fairness to the speed paint set, i do respect you have valid criticisms about its drying time for the purpose of painting ONE mini. But i mean, the brand IS literally named ARMY PAINTER speed paint. The idea is that you're going to use speed paint to SPEED PAINT and army after all, so if it takes you 10 minutes to apply it to one mini, then you have 10 minis in that squad alone, you paint 100 minutes, wait 20, and go back to the first model and do the next layer
@euanthompson
@euanthompson Год назад
I reckon I could paint an entire mini start to finish to a decent standard in 2 hours. Speed Paints are not speeding that process up in that case. I agree about contrast though. It is too quick on drying and the only way to slow it down is medium which then changes the way the paint works. Not exactly great.

Something I'd really like to see is if the Speedpaint 2.0 look as good over metallics as the 1.0 rendition did, because I feel that was surprisingly 1.0's best feature in my opinion. I almost committed to doing an army with Dark Wood(speedpaint) over a silver paint, but the old paint's reactivation killed my motivation.

Agreed. I would base my necrons gunmetal and put grim black over the carapace. It looked great. The reactivation did frustrate me until I leaned to work around it.
@Tharukan
@Tharukan Год назад
I found the reactivation to be more of a feature when utilized right, especially when painting over metallics! You can do kind of a "reverse drybrush" with a lightly damp brush, taking away the tint on the very edges and bringing back the metallic more after the tint. A bit like you would take away oil paint washes with white spirit. Really like that finish.

Ace video - I had a chuckle at the "who are the Army Painter ones for?" - agreed they're not for me either, but lots of minis, two or three colours.... like, historical armies. Which is (theoretically) what Army Painter's core audience is. It's fascinating as much of what they make is still best suited for that audience, even if it's really not how they market it any more.
