I saw them in ‘66 at the Marquee club in London. Gimme some lovin’ had just been written at that club and it was AMAZING! I was 17 and Steve was 18. Inspired me to learn to play, and I did.

Before they were famous Spencer Davis Group used to play a weekly gig at a pub in Birmingham UK called the Golden Eagle where there would be long queues around the block to get in. Word had quickly spread about this 15 year old kid called Steve Winwood. All the local musos of which I was one, couldn't believe how anybody so young could sing and play like that. As to your question about blues and gospel, the general belief is that the blues grew out of "field hollers". Gospel came much later.

You are correct about the drums. That is a very common technique for jazz and blues music. First time I've heard this version.

Steve Winwood was like 17 or something here. The big SDG hits were his Gimme Some Loving' and I'm a Man. Winwood was key as a member of Traffic and Blind Faith and then as solo artist and then touring with Eric Clapton. His voice and organ playing are legendary. More please. One of my favorites of his is Why Can't We Live Together buth there are so many great songs of his.

A++. What a fabulous gem you have found and shared here today. I am over the moon. My heart soars like a hawk. This is probably the best video of Mr. Winwood in action, and with a seminal band in the history of popular music. Of course, no one can do it better than Ray Charles, but lordy lordy , for a Brit, you'd have to give a big hats-off for the performance he gave here on this night. What is also exciting is the prospect that you will follow Steve's work with Traffic, which is equally fabulous. "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" is essential Traffic. But also essential is Steve's work with Blind Faith, who preceded Cream. It was a mixture of Cream and Traffic. Their song "Can't Find My Way Home" is way way catchy and relatable to many. Looking forward to sharing your musical journey. Great choices! Historic one in this case.

Hello Angela: Never heard Spencer Davis do this song, and while I confess I did like it, Ray Charles will always get top honors for his iconic performance. While I am no music historian, I believe you are correct that the Blues grew out of Gospel. However, one way or another, Blues music was born, and thank God for that!

Steve Winwood (only about 19 here) has some serious old soul pipes.

I'm a big fan of Steve Winwood since the 60's but this was the first time I noticed how much he sounded like Ray Charles. It doesn't matter though - I like them both.

I think Gospel and Blues were separate strains within the American tradition which eventually merged. Gospel and Blues existed before Jazz or Rock and Roll. Your channel rocks 🤘🔥🎶

Those are blues riffs, as determined by the chord structure. There is some similarity between blues and jazz but they use somewhat different scales.

The drummer uses brushes to achieve that sound and yes, jazz uses that technique a lot.

They are as close as anything could be, I've read that the blues came from the cotton fields of South Carolina. And people went to church...and gospel music was how you talked to the Lord about your troubles. And "bam" they met. gospel and blues, however we can not leave out bluegrass. Because bluegrass goes back from as far away as Ireland when millions came to America, and some wound up in the Appalachian Mountains. Anyway that's my take on the question that you asked. "Which came first blues or gospel" oh and the drummers had different drum sticks that produced different sounds. Your right those had along wispy end that looked similar to a artist paint brush 🖌️ good ear and nice reaction 👍🏻🔥🎶

My understanding is that Blues and Gospel were basically separate but that a lot of Sunday morning Gospel melodies and arrangements were 'secularized' with new lyrics for Saturday night Juke-Joints and clubs. Religious folks in the black communities certainly did not appreciate what artists like Ray Charles and Sam Cooke did to what they considered their spiritual music!

I am glad you have played some SDG. I love all of their music. Another great one by them is " Stevies Blues", where Stevie plays blues guitar and sings as good as he always does. But the song i wish you would play is Philip Bailey, ( falsetto voice from Earth Wind and Fire), singing " Walking On The Chinese Wall." (Best to get the video version)

Blues originated from work chants in early 1800 slavery ... it slowly evolved into bles as we know it today ...gospel was an integral part of blues while evolving into it's own genre

I suspect that Gospel is a sub-genre of Blues. Like people everywhere, black people in the South had lots of things to sing about, probably more, but only some of them were related to religion.

Yes blues came from gospel music, and the themes of heavy and hell came with iit, yes that was a jazzy blues version.

Gospel took many roots into the American music development. The best sound development came from the Negro spirituals. We get The rhythms of jazz/blues coming out of the Caribbean making its way to all the American cities like New Orleans. Same can be said of reggae, many of the beats and sounds adopted by the islands hard to be completely heard from radios on to our shores but many of them had old African style sound that traveled across and rap music was born out of a mixture of many of those different sounds that blend it in New Orleans. Rock music became a steady of the beats of blues with rhythm coming from even The British Isles folk music that became popularized by the guitar players in the streets deep in the south. This is just a summary of some of the history of what we know to most of our music today. Manny put their personality in the blends of different sounds and took them to different levels that started off with the roots of gospel mixed with the roots of African music is the best summary that can be said of the styles……

I think Blues predates Gospel music. It probably grew out of spirituals, and various other influences. Gospel probably originated around the same time, or slightly after blues. Yes, the drummer was playing a jazz style with the brushes, and the swing rhythm he was playing. I think Steve was probably about 18 years old here - a real prodigy.

I have to disagree with most of the takes on blues vs gospel music. Gospel grew out of the churches and is an expression of faith and hope and spirituality. Blues grew out of farms and plantations and expressed the sadness, frustration and general misery of living and working conditions. They originally were diametrically opposite. Of course, over the years each genre has influenced the other so that there are many gospel sounding blues songs and vice versa. A good example is when Mick Jagger started frequenting a church in southern US just to study the gospel music and wrote"Let It Loose"and "Shine A Light" , both blues rock songs with gospel sounds. Rock and Roll evolved from Blues. Many people believe the first known rock songs was "Sweet Home Chicago" by Robert Johnson written in the 1920s. It is really just a blues song with a lot of rhythm.

You're just about ready for the legendary Georgie Fame! He's been a master of the Hammond organ for nearly 60 years, & is still performing!! He 'invented' his own sound in the 60's, called 'Blue-Beat', & it made him a worldwide star. My personal favourite, of his songs, is Somebody stole my thunder, but most people go for the more commercial sound of his biggest hit, Yeah-Yeah. You choose, you won't be disappointed either way! 😁
