Spencer Davis, the leader of a rock group that had some of the most propulsive and enduring hits of the 1960s, including “Gimme Some Lovin’,” “I’m a Man” and “Keep On Running” - all sung not by him but by a teenage Steve Winwood - died Monday October 19, 2020, in Los Angeles. He was 81. The cause was pneumonia, Bob Birk, his booking agent and friend, said, adding that Davis had been hospitalized for the last week. Davis co-wrote “Gimme Some Lovin’,” his group’s biggest hit. He played rhythm guitar in the band and occasionally sang lead vocals, lending his baritone voice mostly to blues-oriented material and never to the band’s hit singles.

I am so proud that I had the privilege of growing up on 60s. I'm not feeling nostalgic or fear of getting old, bands from the 60s and 70s make me fly back in time, smile and feeling alive. Thank you Steve Winwood.

I heard that Steve Winwood was 15 when he wrote I'm a man wow what a great song so young so young and yet so tall many years later I saw him in Houston Texas right after Higher Love came out oh boy what a treat. Now I am 65 and he is even older. Still remember all the good old songs. More cowbell please.

Art stays. I listened to this at 4 am in 2022. I live in Cairo, miles miles away from where the artist lived. He is probably dead now. I listened to this song and I cried then I danced. I danced for an hr alone in a dark room. That’s what art does. It’s recognizable, it doesn’t age and it moves.

Vale Spencer Davis - my wife and I had the great privilege of meeting you after a gig a decade or so ago - what a complete gentleman you were, weathering our childhood adulation about exciting, urgent music with humour and grace. Vale, Spencer - your band's wonderful music was a touchstone of 60s culture, and lives on throughout so many "changing of the guards"; still exciting, urgent and completely damn danceable. Thank you!

I had the privilege of standing next to the small stage they were playing on, at the Hunt Armory in Pittsburgh, the same summer this song was released. Winwood was only 2 years older than me, but seemed light years ahead of my rather sophomoric musical abilities.

Lifetime favorite tune! I have such a strong memory of this song. I was a freshman in high and went to my first dance. The local cover band was set up in the cafeteria on a short stage. The band played this magic tune with the repetitive bass beat and kids danced in the low light. That scene is etched into my memory and every time I have heard the song for the past 55 years, I think back to that time, and smile remembering that image.
