Spencer Pigot suffered a massive crash into the pit wall barrier in the closing laps of the 2020 Indy 500. Unable to resume to racing before laps ran out, Takumo Sato won his second Indianapolis 500 under caution after holding off a dominant Scott Dixon.
Spencer Pigot is awake and alert and has been moved to a local hospital.
Update: Spencer Pigot has been released from the hospital.

30 years ago they would still be looking for all his body parts. The advances in safety are astounding. I'm glad for that. I'm guessing that he went from about 170mph to zero in 4 feet. I hope he has no internal injuries.

Yeah if that was just a regular brick/concrete dividing wall his car would've been cut in half, he'd likely have been killed and half of his car would've continued to fly down towards all the pit crews too. It would've been horrific.

Racecars in those days were not so unsafe as people are making them out to be today. They already had the stiff survival cell back then. Make it 10 or 20 years earlier, then the original statement would probably be correct. Let's be fair, driver death rate in indycar has been pretty stable since its inception, as well as the number of very serious injuries.
@P1nkR
@P1nkR 4 года назад
What will hurt the most here is coming to an abrupt stop (that, and a sideways impact of course) but not so much the speed. Because 170 mph is way off the mark. According to my own calculations it's around 80 tot 85 mph at point of impact. Here's why: - The entrance of the pit lane is 60 meters from the start of the pit wall. - It took the car 1.5 seconds to travel that distance. - That means the average speed was 40 meters per second - Which equals to about 144 km/u and therefor around 90 mph. That's the average speed though. Let's assume he started at 95, then it would be 85 at point of impact. And that's a high estimate, because you can visually see him scrubbing off a lot more speed once he passed the pitlane sign and started going sideways.

I had an identical crash in the Indy 500 but I waved off the medical crew pushed the remains of my car to the pits and began repairs myself. I reentered the race 10 laps down on lap 480 an by lap 495 I regained the lead to win the first of many Indy 500's. I've done many heroic things like that in race cars and while in the military (where as a sniper I hold the record for confirmed kills). Not to mention the numerous Apollo and Shuttle missions involving spacewalks. The reason you probably haven't heard of my is because I hate people that brag on themselves, matter of fact don't even like to talk about it.

@Jeffcatbuckeye
@Jeffcatbuckeye 4 года назад
I’m not saying the aeroscreen did save his life, but it’s very plausible that it could have. Tire bundles absorb impact due to obviously deforming. This great quality is also a liability because it conforms to everything it hits. You can see the car hits it dead on against the concrete end, so it gets compressed on both ends. You can also see the car submarined the tire bundles and displaced them upwards from the impact. Obviously with that amount of deformity from conforming to the car, it’s very likely that at least one of the tires(which are connected by ties), would have hit his head and neck area. In terms of force, it is exponentially higher than the force Justin Wilson sustained in his fatal incident. A single tire is not light, and it would be hitting the side of your head at 100+mph...mind you these are bundles with opposing force from the concrete pit wall, so the force is exponentially higher than just a single tire. Luckily, he had an aeroscreen with a reinforced halo and polycarbonate to absorb the force instead of his head and neck area. He may have been fine, but being from the racing world myself, I totally get what Paul Tracy was referring to, as any open wheel racer can relate to those situations with deformable barriers. If I was Spencer Pigot sliding sideways into that barrier....I’d definitely appreciate having that safety feature available to me at that moment.

It's nice to enjoy the drama of a crash knowing the safety advances by the sport organisers and the engineers means that no one is going to die
@Jeffcatbuckeye
@Jeffcatbuckeye 4 года назад
Anybody can die at Motorsport. This crash just illustrated why further advances need made to enhance safety further. Luckily, the force was still slightly deflected to the side. At those speeds, even the tire bundles can’t dissipate enough force, and the rate of deceleration is enormous. The 2 biggest risks these days are luckily just fences and sheer deceleration. They have made tremendous strides but those are the 2 hardest things to deal with. Luckily, we have safer barriers to help out a lot in one regard, but a certain amounts of deceleration is still inevitable, and I’m not sure it’s possible to ever completely eradicate, especially with these cars getting an extra 200ho in a couple years. 255mph head in into a concrete wall or a safer barrier wall won’t matter when you have your organs rupture ala Alan Simonsen’s aortic rupture.
@CHERN0BYLCH1LD
@CHERN0BYLCH1LD 4 года назад
@@Jeffcatbuckeye I see what your saying but there is a difference between potentially dying today compared to 20 years ago, had I saw that crash at the 2000 indy 500 I'd have been expecting the worst but in 2020 I was fairly sure he'd walk it off, you have to be spectacularly unlucky to die these days in top tier Motorsport, simensenn, wilson, bianchi, Hubert were all victims of freak accidents where as 20/30 years ago it would just take a crash to kill man as opposed to hitting a tree or a tractor or a one in a million hit from debris, halo, hans and safer barriers have probably saved many lives in the last decade alone, back to your point, poor Hubert is absolute proof that with all the safety and clever engineering in place today can't always save you if the conditions are right for it and I would never assume motor sport to be 100% safe but these days the odds are in favour of the drivers surviving hence why a crash can just be race drama not a blood sport
@Jeffcatbuckeye
@Jeffcatbuckeye 4 года назад
CHERN0BYLCH1LD unfortunately there are still a lot of freak accidents that can happen still. Scott Dixon was about 2 feet from death a couple years ago. To some extent, you could make a credible case that pigot was 1 year lucky here with the aeroscreen.

@@kasarmoos8361 Halo still looks like a flip flop; good for safety but still an awkward if not ugly part of the F1 car. Aeroscreen makes the cars look like fighter jets, plus even safer than halo. Only concern I have with both of them is how much more difficult it would be to get a driver out in a hurry. For instance, what if Pigot's car was engulfed in flames?
