I’m a nondestructive inspection technician, and part of my job is industrial radiography. I’ve worked with Lorad 160 X-ray tubeheads for six years. I can tell you right now that 25-30 CPM on a Geiger counter is practically nothing. What you’re picking up is normal background radiation from the sun. 100 CPM would start to be a little concerning, but even then, effects to your body on that small of a level depends on how much time you were exposed to the radiological dose. Furthermore, whatever radiation sources they may have at Area 51 are safely contained. You’re so far away from the radioactive sources that you wouldn’t pick up anything on a Geiger counter anyway. Any Air Force base that produces radiation, whether it be from industrial radiography, gamma sources, or neutron radiation, they will be shielded according to Air Force Instructions (AFIs) and technical orders.
