Outstanding work! I've been tying flies for a long time. One thing I've learned is there's always something to learn. It's an Art form. Great video!🧐🌲👍
john welsh I use grey mallard it is the breast feathers on the male. but you can use alot of different feathers for it. Bronze mallard is very good as well.
fabulous work. I sometimes use dark brown/black monofilament for the tail. What do you think of that? Too bouyant? I go for durable flies because I only tie a few each year; I'm ashamed to say I never thought of using some foam. Genius!
Hi Mike. And thanks. I can not see any problems with the monofilament if it is thin enough. it is one of the wonderfull things about flyfishing you make you own rules :-) If it Works for you and your fishes. Then it is good.
It's all in preparing the feather first. There is a terrible disappointment when it doesn't work so the prep is worth the work. Pure Joy when you master it. I love to learn these techniques and you are very good at demonstrating. Thanks again. No need to answer. All the best, Sean
do u think it wold be a good idea to varnish or put some light resin on the wings to protect them?not taking anything away from your fly it s a great fly and i never seen this way of tying spent wings before,i m looking forward to getting frustrated with it ;-]
Dear Eric Long. I dont think it is a good idea to varnish the wings. I think that the fly would be to heavy, but there is only one way to find out ;-) good luck.
Hi J.C. Yes you are right. It can be hard to tye. The smallest fly I have made with this wing is a size 17. with the same mallard type of feather. but you can use other types of feathers as well.
Your material handling skill is at least equal to that of another fly tier of blue shirt renown plus your commentary English is easier to understand. Thanks for the demo, it was a pleasure to watch.
Most beautiful set of wings I have seen, natural and durable as a duck feather. I will try to master this technique. Thanks for sharing. All the best, Sean
Beautiful work my friend. You brought that hook to life!!!!!!!!!! Thanks so much for posting, I will have to test drive one of these fly's soon. Hope all is well with you and yours...
real nice tying..really. The cam needs to have a smaller aperture cause your work in background is out of the clear focus area (short depth of field)...try settings above f16,f22,f32 ..smaller (higher number) the better.
SMHAEN in flyfishing ...don't know your cam type but most have manual aperture settings in the menu somewhere. Closeup work like yours really narrows depth of field. Well done!
J Tahoe Well it is about how unlucky you are :-) it is like all kind of flies. sometimes the fish teeth get a good grip in the fly and it is destroyed. some times the fly can take alot of fish ;-)
I was thinking the same. Lovely fly, but everything is so fragile. Deer hair tails, wally wing, cdc hackle. At least it doesn't have a foam extended body! That said, I think the black foam thorax has potential for dividing more conventional spent wings while also providing some buoyancy.
A true artist up there with the likes of Markus Hoffman .The best thing about this fly apart from its amazing replication is the fact there are no plastic artifial wings or legs or nonsense like that, everything apart from the foam is organic and natural ,I found the way you split the wings Mallard feathers amazing and will study more in greater detail but well done indeed I thoroughly enjoyed that presentation
Excellent, I'm new to tying so doing a little research on tying different wings, these wings are class for pennies, (as being new to all this my main hate is sellers ripping you off with over priced stuff, like them printed plastic wings). Thx for the great video Pb
Smhaen, I'm curious about your logo. I know what the fish means but what about the rest ? Also the name "SMHAEN' . What's the significance there ? Just curious. Being of a Pagan spirituality I am familiar with "Samhain" but your fish tells me you are a Christian. I'm guessing this may just be a coincidental similarity of words.
+jeffmtnman It is just my Logo, My sister in law, made it for me, for many years ago. it will be my brand logo in future. Please keep and eye on it ;-) The SMHAEN will be the Brand name. my real name Is Stig Mikael Hansen Stig=S Mikael=M Hansen= Haen together it is SMHAEN thats it Hope this answer your Quistion ;-)
Just starting out on a flytying journey at the age of 70. To tie a fly of this quality is a target I would dearly like to reach and I'm looking forward to the many challenges on offer. Thanks for sharing your skills they will be a big help I'm sure.
wow! very great looking fly. i am getting ready to start piecing together a tying kit and don't think i can wait long enough to be able to tie something like this. do you sell your work anywhere? i would love to have a few of these
Hi Richard. Nice to hear. that is the beuty about fly tying. no rules. there are so many possibilities to tye the fly on that way you need for your own fishing.
As beautiful as any tying I have ever seen. Do you make presentation flies for wall framing because if you do I would love to buy one for my fly tying room.
Thank you John for the kind words. No I do not make flies for the wall, i am sorry. but if you meet me in future some were. You made be lucky to get a fly ;-)
Took 2 flies to get down the wing issues. I have made 6 now, and they are beautiful flies. The wing is more durable than I thought while making it. I thought it would just crumble. Nicely done and fantastic idea to make wings with duck feathers!
Nicely done sir. I've not fished nor tied a fly in about 12 years and am kind thinking to be getting my stuff out of storage and getting back into it again. I like the wings on this fly ...they look realistic....and as I've not seen them seen this technique before. Very informative, albeit your hands were a bit in the way as to see what was being separated it would have been great to see that part front an over top view apposed to the side, but I got the idea. Again...great video! Thank you.
Don Howie You are welcome. Maybe you can see it better on this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TQxko9WSWmM.html I think you should find all you tying goods and just start again, you will deffinately enjoy it ;-)

bonjour shmaen, très belle réalisation, pour plier l'aile de mallard, il doit être possible de le faire avec la pince du magic tool de marc petitjean , mais bravo pour ce superbe montage
Hi, I am new in this type of fishing and I have just begun making my first flies. Today I went trying out my first one (because I still don't have a fly fishing rod I went to a river, tied the fly to a hand line and let it get carried by the current a bit so I could give it some line to them give it some twitches and it looked really good ) and I actually got some bites. After a while though the fly got soaked and sunk to the bottom, I tried to dry it up on a paper tissue and threw it back in the water And I still would get the bites but the fly would sink unless I kept the line tension high. So I tried to dry it again but it was no good and I don't know why, I have some suspects though: 1. The bites ruined the balance of the bait. 2. I wasn't able to dry it well. 3 the fly is too small ( I was trying to catch some tiny fish cuz I thought they'd be easier to catch ), the size of the fly was like this: -------------. 4. I was using the wrong type of feathers ( I was using craw feathers.... yup😬) 5. The shape of the bait didn't give it enough surface tension. 6. It was built completely wrongly 7. It's normal, ain't gotta worry about it, just bring more next time. Could someone help me figure out what's wrong with my fly and tell me how to avoid my mistakes? Any constructive criticism will be very appreciated!
Hello Andrea. There are to many points to answer your questions. Best advice I can give you is to look for a specialized flyfishing shop. Preferably NOT a shop where every angler goes but really a specialized !!!! They can solve you "problems" and show you the materials to use and how to use them. When it's about flytying technics just stay tuned on YT. Advice here, look for "The feather bender" (Barry Ord Clarke) and Davie McPhail. Good luck and tight lines 🎣 from the Čech Republic 🇨🇿.
Just wow! I love to fish the Mayfly and your insight into trimming the hackles to allow the fly to lay flat on the surface is gold! Thank you very much! Subscribed!
That is really beautiful. The way you use the material is interesting he foam to assist floating and coloring the thread for ribbing to save time and minimize materials. I just started tying a year ago and want to thank you for the tips. I think I will give this a try. Thanks again. I also enjoyed your instruction.
