Court métrage d'animation de Norman McLaren et de René Jodoin. Dans une sorte de jeu de mouvement, ils font virevolter des sphères blanches dans un ciel coloré en mouvance. Ces sphères s'alignent, se groupent et se multiplient, entrant parfois en collision l'une contre l'autre. Au piano, Glenn Gould exécute des extraits du « Clavecin bien tempéré » de Bach et donne au film son rythme et l'allure qui le caractérise.

This is almost exactly what my synesthesia looks like when I listen to music. I see geometric shapes that change into different polygons, colors, and textures depending on the the instrument, its notes, and timbre. Sometimes the shapes change into more precise waveforms to represent the sounds. The rhythm dictates whatever patterns they form, and propels them into motion, demonstrating loops of animated sequences. It's always set against a dark, outer space-looking void, just like in this film. I wonder who else experiences this to such a degree.

Also, the background on which the spheres move is like the background in the scene in which the three good fairies give their gifts to the baby aurora in the 1959 Disney film Sleeping Beauty. I wonder if the same or similar techniques were used in the creation of this background as were used in 1959.

The piano piece that starts 4:24 sound similar to that of the claymation short, "VINCENT", by Tim Burton. I wonder what characteristics make this sort of sound? Is it the type of piano? The recording technology? Some other factor of which I am unaware? I love this sound, it is for me a very eerie sound and I would love to be able to replicate it in some way.

I wonder if it would be possible to create a meaningful isomorphism between contrapuntal music and these geometric dances of points in 3-dimensional space, so that you could have a program that loads a midi file containing a fugue by Bach, and returns a dance of spheres. No idea how you'd craft something like that. What kinds of relations could you imagine? Would it be possible to understand it just watching the video?

I know your post is 2 years old, but since it's relevant towards my work: This is possible by creating a generative algorithm that defines its behavior through the use of a digital genotype. By using artificial evolution (a genetic algorithm) with a subjective fitness function (meaning the user/artist chooses the 'organisms' they like), you can then evolve the behavior until it fits your subjective interpretation of what it should look like. There is no one "objectively correct" or meaningful relation for these types of music visualisations, so this was my solution.
