I haven't played this game in nearly 20 years but I loved the whole idea of buying the combos in a comic book store and the insane variety and combos you could do like I've played Spider-Man Ps4/ps5 and it's improved in a lot of ways but the combat is totally lacking the insane combos this game had like god almighty, I know some are insane and don't make sense entirely but I'm sure many could be reincorporated into the Spider-Man 2 sequel out later this year lol
I’ve recently discovered that you can chain a web rodeo from a web hammer, you just have to hold web after you slam and enemy while moving the left analog stick, it works w the counter and the regular combo but for some reason you have to get two slams of from a grapple before it activates (edit) you can do it from 1 web hammer i just messed up the timing lol
grew up playing this on ps2 and now ps4. I can say I like the new one better. its more flashy and more fluid. Fewer moves but more gadgets and a bit more grounded combat. The fun is webbing up enemies instead of knocking everyone out and doing combos like the arkham series. The old one have a plethora of moves but the combat flow is clunky looking and relies too much on air combos (not its fault its almost a 20 yr old game at this point). The fun is absolutely murdering enemies with piledrivers and being able to carry them throwing them up on top of buildings. its like a proto-prototype.
For those wishing the combat system for insomniacs spiderman to be as fleshed out as this. It's meant for all ages I just got to newgame+ and my 3 year old without my help is 60 percent through the game on friendly. I disabled puzzles for him but he's able to understand the mechanics and work out how to beat the bosses himself. It has something for all ages. If the mechanics were better the enemies would have to be tougher and if it was more complex my 3 year old wouldn't be able to play on his own.
I hope you realize how dumb this is, simplify the game SO MUCH so that a 3 year old can play it? Lmao, if your 3 year old loves Spider-Man so much then let him play an easier game with Spider-Man in it, I doubt he’ll notice the mechanics being different since you know, he’s 3?
The best part of this combat system was the fact that Spidey could jump cancel certain grounded combos into aerial combos. This caused some full health-death combos that I'm sure weren't intentional. Aerial combos were very OP against most enemies cuz' of the ragdoll physics. Once you've got them in the air, they have no defense options and death is almost guaranteed. This is, also, probably why Ultimate Spider-Man's enemies weren't able to be launched in the air and thus causing a more grounded combat style.
i agree with you, when enemy is in the air he/she is fucked up if you know what you're doing. this is probably the reason why you couldn't do aerial attacks to bosses as it would make them too easy
what a shame, instead of expanding on it they just nerfed it,looking at the ps4 version safe to say that mentality is still there. In comic books spider man is a whole tier about saber tooth and wolverine who are a tier above captain america so in games he should fight like one, this is why spiderman 2,webs of shadows and shattered dimensions are my favorite.
@@MGrey-qb5xz He can do whatever a spider can. I wouldn’t say Spider-Man is one of the more powerful superheroes, but one of the more versatile. That’s why I loved Web of Shadows, too. How you can go from wall to air to ground. No other Spider-Man game did wall-combat. I guess because you’d have to design l enemies that can stick to walls. There’s enemies that can fly in the PS4 game. I really liked the air combat/gadget stuff in that game. Leaping and wall-crawling really do make Spidey calibres above someone like Captain America, because Captain America is limited to just whatever a conventional person can do. But I wouldn’t agree Spider-Man is stronger than Captain America. I’d argue against it, at least in theory.
Those piledrivers and rapid punches are just too badass. I’d always get that 0 to 100 combo with the grab, headbutt, then toss them up for punches and slams. This game was a ton of fun
Sadly, Insomniac's Spider-Man couldn't even come close to the wide variety of combos you could do here. Because of that, the combat got boring quick. Really hope they actually flesh out their combat system in the sequel.
I’m sorry but the freedom this game gives you with ur web combos with both traversal and combat is insane. I hope insomniac takes some tips from Spider-Man 2 PS2
they won't the web swing is still clunky and the only thing it copies from is the slingshot web swing and they tried to present it as if we never had this shit before. LOL other than that it looks like insomniac took a page from superman 64 when u web glide flying through rings. 😂 i swear insomniac is the wwe 2k of spider man games.
@@SM1-1048”hopefully” also I really doubt it’s there since if it was, all of the reviewers who played this game would have touched up on it, yet all they can talk about is “Ooooh flashy symbiote power so cool”
depends on how you play and whether you know how to use crowd control or not. Some endgame moves are pretty op but I think the same happens in the ps4 game when you use some gadgets. I still have fun with both games
@Gorlock1887 You gotta admit though, this game's combat is pretty jank. Not bad, just weird. SpiderMan ps4's combat is alright but simple and easily exploitable if you know what to do.
You know why? I’m pretty sure it’s the sense of satisfaction by learning pretty spectacular the combos by heart, while on ps4 you don’t have to learn anything, apart from dodging which can just get too chaotic at times and the enemies just like in Batman Arkham are way too absorbant to punches. Id take less forgiving combat over every standard thug tanking super hero punches to the face easily.
It's actually not. The funniest thing is that no body cared about this game's combat the only thing people went on about was the swinging. In a reddit Sefton Hill actually said the freeflow combat is the product of a rhythm game they were working on and he and the team were inspired by classic martial arts movies (making the player the choreographer of the fight by directing) as opposed to anything that came before.
Imo Spider-Man 2 and Web of Shadows had the best combat in any Spider-Man game. The Insomniac one looks nice at the beginning but gets boring pretty fast
Some cool stuff here. Unfortunate though that you didn't use the walldive attack. It's janky, but kinda rad imo (pressing attack during a wallrun or right after a walljump)
Arkham reminds me of nothing about Spider-Man 2 except the free roaming which let's face it . Most games now days anyway I think Arkham Series would've still excited and still been just as good with or without Spider-Man
You cant compare a fragile spider to a walking tank. Of coarse the combat is different. Batman runs people through the dirt while spiderman has to always be on his toes because he didnt spend years training in martial arts
This is nothing like the Arkham series so don’t even try to hit me with “sPiDeR mAn 2 DiD iT fIrSt” or “ArKhAm AsYlUm WaS iNsPiReD bY sPiDeR mAn 2” they’re almost nothing alike
It's not that the gameplay itself it's the same. It's the counter attack that people compare. Arkham "fans" says things like "spider-man ps4 stole Arkham's combat" wich it's not true, spider-man ps4 is inspired from this game
Please tell me how people look at this and say this is where Arkham got its combat from? I don't get it, the two systems couldn't appear any more different even if they were deliberately designed to be.
People make the comparison because countering plays a big part of how you fight in this game as well. You'd be right though; Spidey feels much more videogamey than Batman's more automated kung-fu feel.
@@Sophie_the_Sapphic I know you commented on my comment 5 months ago, but I just did that combo move in Spider-Man 2 (on GameCube) and it worked! Thanks for your help.
My biggest problem with the combat was that it's way too floaty and chaotic. For me making mid air combos, or trying to do swing attacks fell extremely difficult to me. I dont know if I'm doing something wrong, or if it's just that the combat is too old for me. I personally appreciate combat that is more strict, like in the batman franchise, or mortal combat, or hell even the indie game overgrowth, giving the player a form of an assist. The funny thing about spiderman 2 is not the control in combat for the player, but rather the lack of it. Or to be more exact, the "assistance" during combat, in a way.
Nah this combat mechanics were perfect for a Spider-Man game and much better than PS4 Spider-Man's fight mechanics. So basically you're saying you don't like Spider-Man 2's fighting because you suck ass at it.
Search to see if there are any game stores that carry old retro games near you. Otherwise, I ld say best to look online through Ebay. I was lucky to find this at a game store next to my college.
2023 and people still think Batman invented “spider sense” combat system 😹, I hate when people come to say that spider man(ps4-ps5) copy Batman’s combat system… when it’s already exist on this old games 🤡 spider man 2 and ultimate spider man…u Batman Arkham fan don’t get me wrong, I played all Batman’s and love each one of them but they copy spider man bro 😹
@@ArKnighthambro I’m sorry but this looks like the first form of free flow combat honestly this combat is better than Spider-Man 2 when I play the ps5 version I feel like some one is playing the game for me when I do combos and run on walls this game has more momentum when swinging it feels to real for a 2004 game. So that means Arkham copied Spider-Man 2 that’s crazy. 😂….
@@rhett8819 It's a mixed bag. Spiderman PS4 is nearly perfect. Great animations, enemy variety, plenty of gadgets and WAY too many suit powers. The only thing missing is the mix of combos that Spiderman 2 had. You can't even hang enemies up on lamp posts. Both are great games.
Spider-Man 3 is WAY worse in comparison to 2. I've played both. My God Spider-Man 3 is garbage. I wish Spider-Man 3 had the same combat style as 2 but kept the graphics. That really could have made the game more playable IMO.
@@brucew565 No one cared about this combat until the Spiderman 2018 game came out. Only thing they went on about was the swinging. Rocksteady was working on a rhythm game which lead to the birth of free-flow. Sefton Hill and the team at Rocksteady were inspired by classic kung-fu movies. Most inspirations were taken from the comics. The level design being from metroidvania and the camera angle from RE4 along with scarecrow taking on a stalker role in the asylum.
