I’m sure most of you have seen it by now, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse released last week and my god, what an incredibly special piece of storytelling. Obviously the hype and anticipation was HIGH for this one, and I am obviously not alone in saying that it lived up to and exceeded that hype. ESPECIALLY in its overperformance at the box office, $208 MILLION worldwide in its opening weekend, absolutely bonkers, nearly 4 times as much as the first made in its opening weekend. But I am not exaggerating when I tell you that this thing is special on MULTIPLE levels. The animation, the story, the characters, returning and new, are all just handled with such incredible expertise. In some ways, even more adeptly than the first film, Into the Spider-Verse, which itself is an absolute masterpiece. If you haven’t caught it yet make sure to check out my latest retrospective on that film as well. There is SO much to dig into, so let’s just get to it and begin our trip Across the Spider-Verse.

His animation style, color palette, attitude, dialogue, plot significance... everything screams punk about him. The movie subverts your typical assumptions in all the best ways. Hobie seems like he’s just gonna be a typical rival for Miles in his relationship with Gwen, but ends up being a great friend to him. The spot seems like he’s just gonna be another villain of the week to reintroduce you to Miles but he instead becomes a major threat and the primary antagonist.

I love how the movie explored Miles's loneliness, as well as how it juxtaposed it against Gwen's. It may just be that I'm a young adult now and in that perfect place to relate to these coming of age Spider-Man stories, but I could really relate with that kind of social loneliness, longing for connection, but unable to really find it. Gwen jumped at the opportunity to join the spider society, not realizing she'd have to compromise her values to stay. Miles was ecstatic to join too, until he found out what he'd have to let go of. His example of not betraying his values is what led Gwen to trying to help Miles. He showed her that the shallow connections she felt, and the temporary relief from her anxiety and trauma were not worth betraying what she believed in and who she was. Can't wait to see how they finish this brilliant trilogy

I also love the theme of just how lonely being Spider-Man is. Miles doesn’t have many friends. Gwen has no friends. In the previous movie, Peter B had no relationships, was completely alone. Hobie is my stand out character for this film. He's brilliant but doesn't show it openly. He comes off as cold and a bit selfish until you actually see what the hell he's doing. After my first watch it all dawned on me how elite he really was. Not only the dude is hilarious but so smart. He befriends miles and has his back subtly when he says “me and him don’t follow rules” to Jess, but miles didn’t get what he was protecting him from. The way Hobie seems antagonistic towards miles but is actually warning him is incredible and he plans way ahead by stealing those pieces for watches because he knew once shit went down with miles, Gwen would likely end up out the society too. This dude is the unsung MVP of the movie
@gracecalis5421
@gracecalis5421 Год назад
He really had no intentions of sticking around either. When Miles asks why he still sticks around with the Spider Society, he says he's just looking out for his drummer, AKA Gwen. And as he's saying that, he's stealing parts to build Gwen her own watch. He was the only character in the entire movie who was looking out for everyone and didn't betray any of his friends' trust. Actual gigachad.

I think the issue that got rid of the universe Miguel went to wasn't the lack of canon event, but the fact he tried to replace someone that died there. Miles only works in 1610 because hes not a Peter replacing a Peter, he's a Miles replacing a Peter In the universe where Miguel went, everyone disintegrated, nothing else. But in Paviti's universe, the 'destruction' looked more like The Spot's power than anything.

it also ties in so well with the major theme of identity if you view it through the lens of him being a mixed kid. so many mixed kids feel isolated because of their identity (not being able to fully fit in with both parts of their identity, which is similar to miles juggling his Spiderman life and his family life), and the spider task force actively represents the people that invalidate Miles’s existence. the big theme of identity is amazing because it works as such a broad allegory that mixed people, trans people, and pretty much EVERYONE can find something to relate to in Miles (and Gwen).

I love how the whole movie, everyone is trying to tell Miles what he is supposed to do because he’s an “anomaly” and if he doesn’t stick to the canon it would break universes, yet when he met Peter B in the first movie he was able to change Peter’s outlook on children which led to Pete and MJ making up and then having Mayday. Which in turn shouldn’t have been canon for Peter B, but with our Miles being Spider-Man, he changed the canon and led to a new canon. So I still feel that Miguel’s belief in the canon argument isn’t 100% correct. Miles is such an amazing character and these movies really highlight it. Definitely my favorite Spider-Man. “Nah, imma do my own thing” really hits home, and is right up there with his leap of faith scene from the first movie

The best way to explain the canon points plot (and why Miguel protects this canon so much) is probably watch a Doctor Who episode where The Doctor ends up in a fixed point in time (The Waters of Mars, for example, which features a future 'canon' event that can't be altered), or The Fires of Pompeii (where The Doctor ends up in the eruption of the volcano). As a long time fan of both Spiderverse (in any media) and Doctor Who (in any media), that was how I understood Miguel's point of view and why he's not a villain, but an antagonist. Also, funfact, Hobie/Spider-Punk is the character that took the most time to animate (and the one where the animators went absolutely bonkers, inspired in the style of old punk magazines). I love Spider-Punk in the movie AND in the comics, give them a chance if you can! He reminds me a bit of Spider-Noir too because my boys kick nazi heads on the daily.

Miguel strikes me as the watcher Spider-Man, he's had to essentially become the multiversal guardian and has become (as far as he thinks) completely appraised to what you can and cannot mess with and that has happened to him the hard way. When you consider his origin is someone whom was tricked into becoming an addict and genetically altered himself into something in an attempt to overcome his addictions his staunch and uncompromising positions take a but more of a sombre tone when you realise he is very more fearing a relapse (in this case a complete universal breakdown). The references to Doctor who are perfectly valid and really help us understand the dilemma this Spider-man has and also helps us realise that out of all the spider people there is is the most tired. He doesn't make jokes, he doesn't smile, he just does his job because honestly what else has he got?

But Miles changed Peter B Parkers universe by making him want kids. He would haven't of done that without him. He also made Gwen find friends (her band) which we don't know would have happened without him. We also don't know what affect he had on the others. In any way, PBP universe was a change that should have disrupted/added a canon event that shouldn't have been. He also being bitten should have disrupted canon events in his universe, many of them, and yet it's still going strong. And universe 42, where the spider came from, why isn't it gone? It now has no spider-man where there should be one. So pretty sure all those canon events have been disrupted. His theory doesn't make sense. He is forcing them to do what the TVA did in Loki (if you have watched it).

@@Schnipps That's exactly why I compared it to fixed points in time in DW. The Doctor has disrupted “canon events”/fixed points in time more than once, even when we knows they're supposed to be fixed. As a message it's not one I disagree with but as a meta-reading of the framchise I guess I find it odd? There has never been a lock-step adaptation of Spider-man, and most on screen adaptations take more from each other or even Ultimate Spider-man more than they do the mainline comics. As a statement it strikes me as redundant. But maybe that's the point and that the mainstream perception of Spider-man is more of a 'trutherism' than true, just as in-universe the Spidey Society is misunderstanding the nature of the universal collapse. It also raises the question of why exactly some Spider-people or stories are accepted and some receive more pushback.

They already showcase him struggling with his life balance in classic Spider fashion, but then showcasing that he wasn’t even supposed to be the one to get the powers in the first place just gives him such an interesting struggle to deal with. Miles is told he doesn’t belong. He was a mistake and his very existence is destined to be an anomaly from the rest of the ‘real’ spider people. But Miles carves his own path. If he doesn’t belong with them, then he’ll just make his own seat at the table and fight toward what he believes is right. Nice to see that Hobie sort of helped inspire him to go against what he’s ‘supposed’ to be and become what he actually wants to be

With the whole "police captain needing to die" as part of the canon, in a figurative sense it happens with Gwen. Her being Spider-woman and having to tell her dad and confront him with that reality, and then leaving him "kills" the captain. The next time she sees him, he's changed and has come to accept her reality and quits being a police officer. So "Captain Stacy" was figuratively killed and was replaced with "Dad Stacy". Her breaking ties with her dad still serves as a traumatic event with him being "dead" to her and no longer having a sense of family.

Miles found a Spiderman who sees the world around him, and after going through hell still has the ability to function with a smile. (Doesnt mean that his way is the healthiest but Pavitr lays the groundwork for a Spiderman franchise that can expand beyond Miles). Unrelated but Gayarti's father was a Sikh, can't comment on representation but given the various elements they were able to incorporate the creators can make a compelling Pavitr centered movie that addresses a variety of social issues, history of oppression/ violence, and how young people are supposed to balance generational trauma while forming their own identities.

Specifically from their character motivations: the desire to be the main character's arch-nemesis, to be taken seriously, and to destroy everything the protagonist loves. The origins of their current deformed selves (accidentally created from the ignorance of the protagonists) is also similar. Both also had a relationship to a weird meta-void, and were originally kind of a joke before becoming a serious antagonist. i loved how we were expecting a love triangle, but actually Hobie is instantly supportive of Miles. The moment he literally tells him how to escape made me fall in love with his character even more so. Helps that 1 I love classic punk, and 2 adore his art style. He truly wants the Spidey's to live their lives, and I like to think he only joined simply to help out, but instantly disagreed with Miguel's more controlling ways. Not trusting the person in charge is obviously in his character, but its clearly he was already at odds with Miguel when Miles showed up, likely as a result of finding out his beliefs about Miles and the canon. And whilst Jess was less developed, I think that could've taken away from Gwen, Miles and our other key Spider people. So I don't mind that, assuming she gets more development in the finale. Also, Gwen was a very enjoyable side character in the first film, with a wholesome relationship with Miles and simple and pleasant character arc. In this one... Jesus. Miles was amazing, but Gwen was also. I dont even wanna call her the perfect deuteragonist, because she simply felt like the other main character, which was unexpected but brilliant. She has to be one of my all time favourite renditions of a Spidey now. I also love the use of drums as a rather obvious nod to gwen’s instrument whenever she’s around, hobie’s rock themes, and even the use of more latino hip hop for miles. Its such a wonder elaboration on the styles and backgrounds of each character.

The deafening drum intro for gwen was amazing I loved how they themed each character. The score tracks "vulture meets culture" and "guggenheim assault" had me genuinely hooked the clash of themes is just so pleasing. I just wish we had more of miles whistling theme? or whatever they used during Visions in the first movie. That track that plays when miles is swinging home also stuck out to me it was really powerful. All the other tracks definitely painted the universe too

2:12 really thought he was going to say especially fun since a 14yr old animated that part of the film, he's very talented and because recreated the trailor for the movie in the lego style the people working on the film were so impressed upon seeing it they reached out to his parents asking if he'd be willing to work on a segment for the official release. Also when Miguel tells lego spiderman "you're one of our best" that hits different knowing this since it could be indirectly referring to the 14yr old and the potential he has if he pursues his passion in the animation industry.

What I like about the end is that it isn’t a “twist.” There are so many signs that Miles is in the wrong universe, yet because the scene before was so tense, a lot of people didn’t notice the signs. Great movie.

And I really appreciate it because it still works great if the viewer does catch on. My eyes were glued to the fact that oh no it says 42 when the go home machine booted up, so I spent that entire time enjoying the tense thriller of waiting for the other shoe to drop while the characters are oblivious to the metaphorical bomb under the chair.

I loved this movie, thought the theater I saw it in had the very public audio issues, so I only caught like 60-70% of the dialogue. The fact that I found the film as affecting as it was without being able to hear a good chunk of what the characters were saying is a MASSIVE point in its favor.

There is actually a little bit of sneaky foreshadowing that Miles shouldn’t be the spider man in his own version of earth earlier in the film prior to the reveal that I haven’t seen many people point out. If you look closely at what Miles is wearing in the scene when Gwen first enters his world to visit him, you can see that the text on his shirt says “Brooklyn 42.” The number of the earth that Miles was “supposed” to be the spider man in. And this is way before it is revealed that Miles is an anomaly!

I fucking loved this movie. Thank you for reviewing this movie as a complete story. I was kinda surprised how many people were lukewarm about the story saying it’s incomplete. I think yeah obviously there’s a cliff hanger but that doesn’t mean there’s a satisfying conclusion. ESPECIALLY with Gwen’s story. I think Miles will always be my favorite because of his conflict with expectations and identity and I can’t wait to see what they do with him in the next movie. March can’t come soon enough!

U are right about Miles being confident, I mean he literally said to Miguel “nah Imma do my own thing.” This shows that Miles will do whatever takes to save the people that he loves and he doesn’t care what Miguel says about him Miles knows he’s spider man because he took that leap of faith and went beyond the call of duty to stop the collider. All he needed was confidence, and he’s got it! That’s what’s awesome about Miles, the sense of confidence and hope.

A common motif in Into the Spider-Verse was the idea of Expectations, it's a subtle motif but definitely consistent. I didn't realize until watching some tiktoks about it but Across the Spider-Verse DOES have a thematic motif as well, I just didn't notice at first. It's the idea of "doing both". It's a classic Spider-Man theme of wanting to both be Spider-Man and also have a normal life. It's displayed in a very typical fashion with Miles trying to fight the Spot and text his dad. The counsellor says something about Miles wanting to have his cake and eat it too and Miles comes in and says "unless you have two cakes" but then he shows up to his dad's party with two cakes and both cakes are fucked up because he was trying to do both. Miles wants to be Spider-Man and not have to sacrifice the people Spiderman always has to sacrifice. But it's also shown with other characters! Pavitr says "I can do both" when he wants to save his GF and the inspector... but he can't. Gwen said "I was trying to do both" when she was referencing protecting the canon (moreso following Miguels rules so she can stay a part of his society) and saving Miles' life (I believe that because she got the warning beforehand she believed that if he interfered he would die). And of course Miles' speech to Miguel and the other spideys saying "I can do both, Spiderman always does-" and him being cut off with "Not always." Because realistically... Spiderman rarely ever gets to do both.

The way i was absolutely geeking out over Hobie's character design. Halfway through Hobie's screen time i realized Hobie's entire art style is inspired by the post modernist punk art movement. Hobie visual embodies the punk movement. Its not a detail that most casual viewers would notice, but like so many other aspects of this masterpiece of a movie, its such a fun detail to pick up on if you just know little bit more about the material. I also really really enjoyed when Rio and Miles spoke in Spanish and it WASNT translated. As a Spanish speaker it felt like a lil bonus, being able to understand a few extra lines of dialouge.

19:31 I just realized a HUGE clue towards Gwen’s story being a trans allegory. Her father cannot accept her identify because he believes that she killed Peter, someone close to the captain too. As a trans man, I know how that feels on Gwen’a end-to have a loved one be convinced you killed someone when you didn’t. The end scene between Gwen and her father really hit home hard. She was trying to convince her father that she didn’t kill Peter, but he’s gone regardless and her father can either choose to keep his false belief, or accept the truth and move on in life with his daughter.

One thing that I think is worth mentioning is the lack of a post credit scene. In the original it teased 2099 and the further expansion of the universes. But the lack of one in. This movie is bold and unique especially given the nature of comic book movies in this time. It’s almost like a clear message saying “this movie set up what’s coming so perfectly it doesn’t need a tease.”
