Because the MCU is different to the Spider man movies based on the comics they are letting casual/ new fans know what her character represents. Remember not only comic die hard Marvel fans watch these movies, you also have casual fans who may only have knowledge of Mary Jane so it's for them to know what role Michelle would play. Michelle is peters love interest just as Mary Jane is in the original movies, but Michelle is exclusively for the MCU. Michelle and Mary Jane are not the same characters so how is it tokenized? I would understand the backlash if Zendaya was playing Mary Jane in the MCU movies because then she doesn't look like Mary Jane, but they literally made up a new character with her own personality to avoid that.

Gwen is a classic character from the comics. This new "MJ" is just an invented character for this franchise.

If they wanted to make a NEW character, then they shouldn't have called her "MJ", given her the iocnic "tiger" line, and dyed her hair red. Just one of those would have been a reference, all of those things points to a blatant attempt to replace Mary Jane in the MCU before she ever had a chance to be in it. They didn't want to just say "Mary Jane is a person of color" so they chose this extremely dumb half-measure. It's really fucked up to replace a ginger (global minority) character with a person of color who has their hair dyed red....that's like giving a mexican dude a fake afro and casting him as a black character. People sure are stupid, they'll go along with anything as long as they think it makes them look progressive and morally supeior...but this is actually kinda racist.

@@EpoxyMuffin What "iconic" Mary Jane line did they give her and she did not due her hair red for the movie. She is a replacement of Mary Jane and it wasn't all about race. It was about making the movie modern, realistic and less stereotypical. The old Mary Jane was kind of a damsel in distress and not a great role model for kids so the producers already knew they wanted to change the character up. They liked Zendaya during her audition and she was definitely something new. And you're analogy about a Mexican guy with an afro does not work at all bc it does not correlate to this situation. It's not racist to cast a new character in a movie.

@@mahad813 Bc that would be irrational for two reasons: 1. Shuri and Okoye live in a country that's full of black population. Peter lives in Queens, New York which is one of the most diverse cities in America. So casting a black person as a love interest works. 2. It's people of color who are underrepresented on TV not white people. Replacing a white character with a black when the race of the character is irrelevant to the movie puts more representation of poc on TV which is def needed. It's important for young poc kids to see someone who looks like them on TV in strong big roles. It inspires them and lets them know they can make it there too. Some black kids literally grew up thinking stories had to be about white people. So this representation is important. Replacing a black person with someone of white skin does nothing but widens the issue of underrepresentation for poc. So that would be going backwards.

She just has the nickname “MJ.” Another example of a character that doesn’t need to be their race in the comics, is Iris West. If you watch The Flash show on CW. Her, and her dad and brother and mother, are all African-American despite being Caucasian in the comics and it didn’t make a difference. Because they didn’t need to be Caucasian. i actually think its brilliant, peter parkers love interest is mary jane, but we've gotten two versions of her already, so its a clever was to stay true to the story and the character, while doing something different and refreshing, so we get a new character michelle jones, so not mj. but peter parker still gets an mj in his story, its clever, bcus technically, she isnt really mj, mj in the comics has red hair and cheerleadersesque type character. so she is obviously not mj. but we still get an mj. its brilliant bro

No reply to that mate, ya got me but the thing about adapting material as the guardians (who are known for having already multiple interpretations throughout the years in the comics) is that since they were not that known you had more liberty with it to do as they please but something as beloved as Spidey... you're just used to it in a certain way. Listen you are correct but Guardian's changes came from the right motive, to build the right storyline within the MCU and to make them work as Gunn intended whilst Spidey's changes were just to please the social justice movement, just for looks, just for show. Social Justice when used properly is a beautiful thing but in this case i think the character was second thought and agendas came first. Although you make a compelling argument i believe it is two different situations and character, the material, should come first. My opinion 'tho, obviously i'm no one but that's how i feel.

The Spectacular cartoon could've if it went on longer, but not a single movie has done Mary Jane justice. It'd just be cool to have a definitive version, whereas Michelle is some sort of hybrid. Told as not being MJ but still given that abbreviation. Essentially hogging some cool moments, lines and importance to Peter. It's like making a hybrid of Robin and some League of Assassin member then passing it off as the definitive Dick Grayson.

Peter Parker has always been drawn as a white male teenager/man, Tony Stark is always a white man, The Falcon is always a black man. The only notable race change is Nick Fury.

She promotes the movie with red hair because of the legal situation with the MJ character. This is a stand-in character for Mary Jane Watson. The red hair is still used to market this character and movies under the guise of "MJ".
