Favorite part of the movie for me, i just couldnt help but think after that moment how could the writers get this so so right like this. Just incredible
On paper this film shouldn't work, it has everything stacked against it: huge number of villians, multiple plot threads, large cast etc. I am so impressed with how they stuck the landing in this film and gave closure, not just for the MCU spider-man films, but to Spider-man franchise across the board. Definitely the best quality [live action] spider-man we've gotten, I can't wait to see what they do with Spider-man next; he isn't a "..kid" anymore.
It's insane, it also took on the task of closing two other runs by two other main actors. This has disaster written all over it, but man did they pull it together.
@@gleekthemonkey4570 it made me think Spider-Man 3 and Amazing Spider-Man 2 where they tried to do the multi-villain thing and it was a train wreck. So to see this one pull both those series, as well as have its own story together I thought couldve been too much, but it worked in the best possible way.
@@JigInsane the bad guys barely do anything at all though lol they have 2 action scenes and the scene at the end…….like what do they actually do most the film
@@prestonscott8214 I think thats what helps it. They aren't trying to do to much. They do enough to get ppl up to speed with them, and have some sort of purpose towards the end, built from the dialog portions earlier in the film. Lizard may have gotten the shortest end of the stick though, then Sandman. Lizard mostly, but I think if they had them do more, the movie would need to be longer and might have run into a situation of feeling like it's doing too much. What I did really like, and the theater kinda cheered a bit, is when Jamie Foxx insinuates Miles Morales while talking to Garfield.
The fact they managed to make over 20 years of Spider-Man movies pay off in a satisfying way is amazing. I hope they stick with this type of tone in the future because it really sets the stakes well and makes the world believable.
I enjoyed Homecoming and Far From Home, but always felt like Tom was still just a kid in a suit. When I left seeing No Way Home, I felt like Tom had truly become Spiderman, the icon, the hero I looked up to when I was a little kid. His fight for what’s right in trying to save and redeem the villains, while believing everyone deserves a second chance really hit home :) All of this topped off with his selfless, sacrificial choice in the end was so Spiderman. I think his acting and especially Zendaya’s in this was incredible and you could really feel their chemistry on screen now relative to the first two movies.
Very well said. While I love Homecoming and Far From Home, it didn’t feel like Peter was truly Spider-Man yet. By the end of this one, he is undoubtedly the iconic Spider-Man we know and love!
You're right. You're so right. Before going into this movie, I would have never understood how I could possibly see Tom Holland as more than a child. Then after the big thing right before the very end, I couldn't imagine more Spider-Man movies because this child needed his support system, which are *SPOILERS* now all gone. It was really the last 15 minutes that cemented in my brain that Peter Parker is an adult and that lets my brain see Tom as one too. Now I can't wait for more movies because this tragic Peter who tries to take it on all alone before hitting that low point and bouncing back is my favorite Peter Parker and I can't wait to see Tom Holland mature through that role more.
It's possible Otto just figured out that Norman was the Goblin even though it wasn't public knowledge. The two were acquaintances and I'm sure Otto was aware of the Oscorp glider and just pieced it together.
Andrew Garfield was so incredible as his sad, near broken Spider-Man. His heart in trying to help save our Peter not go down his road as well as how absolutely his genuine happiness just radiated out of him to suddenly be surrounded by people who understood him was the soul of this movie as he represented what our Peter could become if he let his grief consume him.
SPOILER - do not read any more if you haven't seen the film and don't want it spoiled. But man, that first post credit scene gave me such mood whiplash lol. I was SO mad at the possibility of Tom Hardy Venom being in the MCU. But then he disappeared and I let out a legitimate SIGH OF RELIEF like a cartoon character.
YES! I like how the movie treated him like the doofus he is lol. While everyone else is fighting and saving the world, he’s still trying to get his bearings. Using that as the introduction to the symbiote in the MCU is an interesting choice but I’d rather that then have this version of Eddie Brock stay in the MCU.
@@defro125 I've been thinking about that since I saw the movie today. It really feels like Sony is backed into a corner with things now. Morbius was supposed to be out before NWH and is now taking place after all the stuff was resolved. And we know the people that were pulled to MCU were those that knew Peter Parker, and only those were sent back.... so how is Vulture there? ...is Morbius...MCU? D:
@@burnsabeast see this is why morbius is so confusing!! it CANT be in the MCU bc you see an oscorp building in the trailer. NWH confirms there is no oscorp in their universe so it can’t be the MCU as we know it. not to mention the poster of tobey’s spider suit. morbius is going to be a trash fire. i can’t wait
@@blackiemist88 it’s just so lame to not keep the people from the rewatch crews for the movie it’s leading to. It’s like having a finale that ends without two of the main characters
Jesus Christ what an episode. I mean the movie was phenomenal but I swear this in review was just as good. First off, holy fucking shit Cameron Kennedy. That intro was fantastic. Also, Nick the hair looks amazing ! But you guys had me dying the entire episode. I missed you so much Greg
Lot of people say this movie is fan service. And yes, you are right. But I think this movie also celebrates Spider-man movies good and bad. The movie is not cynical. It embrace the mistakes, but also what made the characters great. It was very well researched. Even the plot holes you said, there are explanations for those. The movie just worked.
@@Darwinfeeshy that s the plot hole dude octavious confirm that norman is dead and sandman confirms even in that time no one but peter and bernard knew that the goblin was norman
@@jonhconner1191 Assuming that it is all based on the movies exactly, but if this makes the movie bad to you, that sucks. It is obvious it is different timelines because the Spiderman are older.
The ultimate moment of this in review is the hand off of plot from Greg to Nick. As a long time kinda funny fan seeing Nick being just as good as Greg at the plot and hosting is so cool.
Something that I thought was super interesting in the mirror dimension scene when peter realizes that it is geometry is that it calls back to the first Thor movie when Thor is telling Jane that magic and science are one in the same.
Garfield’s performance was brutal. Got me every single time. Dafoe’s was brilliant as green goblin, how he changes his face to look like. Madman is scary af.
The fact that these three movies was the ENTIRE arc for Tom Holland going from a kid thrust into the hero world to wanting to live up to his hero’s standards to finally becoming his own hero as Spider-Man. I cried, laughed, smiled and felt so much of the “it really sucks to be Spider-Man” that the hero stands for. What a film and what a endcap/jumping off point for this character.
The mid-credit scene - seems like a nod to secret wars, where the symbiote attaches to the Spider-man in the original Secret Wars event. Containment spell - the Spell Dr Strange uses to contain the spell is the same that we see in What If, used to contain the two individuals at the end of the series.
Yes, and the trailer for Dr strange shows the same strange from what if.... might be the intro of Captain Carter or someone else, I don't wanna get ahead of myself though.
I love we got the im something of a scientist myself line. Also seeing matt murdock even for only a few minutes was so hype. But one of my favourite moments was andrews moment with mj. Don't normally tear up but that got me honestly. Was an amazing film, this could easy be number 1 for me.
This got me a few times. The Uncle Ben talk gets me every time. Andrew’s catch gets me every time. And then I’m just smiling most of the way through. It really is like a dream come true. Unreal.
I thought Kevin would love the mid-credits scene. It was basically a rug pull of, "Oh, you thought this Sonyverse stuff was coming to the MCU? Nope." The symbiote left behind seems to imply that the MCU will do their own version of Venom that isn't awful. Edit: just watched more and saw Tim already addressed this, totally agree. It's Kevin Feige saying "no thank you" to the prospect of using Sony's Venom.
The question is, why bother with all that effort and coordination, you don’t need your symbiote to come from another universe. I don’t think we’ll get a MCU Venom for a while either way, there will probably be an entire movie (or more if there’s crossover shenanigans) with the black suit before they have a Venom.
Well, Venom is awful and to date, MCU is pretty great and tonally consistent with its characters. No thank you to Sony's Venom indeed. Tom Hardy is probably top 5 actors for me and even he couldn't make that tripe watchable.
Prediction for a future film: Making use of his latent magical ability, Ned will be able to break through the spell and remember Peter through the use of the handshake.
When Tim mentioned the Spider-Man PS4 move in the Spoiler-free review, I had so many cool combos and possible moves running through my mind. I couldn't even comprehend the idea that they would include one of his combo finishers and to do it so brutally on the balcony! It was *chef's kiss*! More gaming moments in films/movies please!!!
That wasn’t the only one though, the move Peter did to him in the first fight where he uses his webs to slam his feet into Goblin through a floor was another one. Both of them are general Spidey moves though, not necessarily from the game, even if the game was what inspired them to incorporate them. The bigger homage was the FEAST shelter and the gravestone.
Kevin... FIXING THE CHAIR at the theater moments before he's about to see the biggest movie of the goddamn year... IS SUCH A KEVIN ASS STORY. Amazing. Fucking love this entire crew.
All I can say for this film is “finally.” This was the MCU Spidey movie I’ve been begging for. Finally, some emotional depth and maturity that’s been lacking from this iteration. Jon Watts stepped it up in every way. MCU Spidey finally has some amazing and memorable action scenes. The Goblin fight scenes were so visceral, brutal, horrific, and just left me in awe. The goddamn score!! I like Holland’s theme because it recreates the classic theme, but before now they never used it in this epic, operatic way similar to Elfman’s score that just continued to give me chills. The fucking Spider-men was a dream come true. I couldn’t believe the movie I was watching was real. The dialogue between them is so effortless, organic, and so emotional that it brought me to tears. The details is what made it for me, like Tobey saying the Chrysler building is his place to escape (from the first movie after Ben passed). Each character from the past was brought back in such a great way, with actual arcs rather than gloried cameos and fan service. This film is an absolute love letter to Spider-Man and I cannot believe it exists.
For the most part I agree about the villains, but Sandman and Lizard really didn't need to be in it. They didn't get the same love as Norman, Otto, and Max.
Theres a point in this episode where they go on so many side tangents one after another that I genuinely thought I was listening to the Kinda Funny podcast and got completely thrown when they started recapping the plot again
Man I loved this movie. I love how they kept the focus on the main MCU cast as the emotional core but gave us all the Easter eggs and callbacks. Top 3 MCU movie
I laughed, I cheered, I cried (literally). What a fantastic movie. Top 3 MCU for me (at #3 on my list), and my favorite Spider-Man movie (this is saying a lot, I adore Into the Spider-Verse). They pulled it off. They did it. They made it work so well. Bravo. My only nitpicks are around some of the writing (Sandman’s motivation, etc) and not understanding where the direction is heading for the future. The end-credit scene confused me a little. Edit: ouch, Greg
@@ANTIStraussian I respect opinions but I’m starting to questioning “some” peoples opinions regarding the film. Whatever criticism you had towards MCU Spider-Man prior to NWH-This film fixed that. If you STILL don’t like MCU Spidey after this film, I don’t know what to say. I think you just hate this character in general. One of the most authentic Spider-Man media out there.
They didn't mention it, but as far as an easter egg goes, I think I saw Hank Pym and Howard Stark in a mural inside the high school. It was in the staircase right before the scene with the teachers.
"Did you see the new Spider-Man movie?" "No, why?" "Tobey's back!" "What about it? Is it STILL hurting? It's been twenty years, the man needs to see a chiropractor."
Can we have a third an Amazing Spiderman movie now that's overseen by Disney that follows the events of this movie (electro being alive for example), where venom is in the same universe (he did say that he wanted to go to NY to meet with Spiderman) and opens the possibility of Andrew Garfield coming back to the MCU
1:24:59. Go watch the Screen Junkies Honest Trailer commentary for Far From Home. They have Toni Revolori there and he talks about it. That scene was improvised by him. His father was supposed to be the one to pick up Flash at the airport but Toni talked to Jon Watts the night before they shot the scene and convinced him it would be funnier if his parents didn't show up. His home life was not written that way; it was just a comedic choice.
The Lizard and Sandman don't die fighting Spider-Man in their movies and Doc Ock had regained control over the arms right before his death which is why I don't believe they were pulled (or not all were pulled) as they were literally about to die (like Norman with the glider) just at a moment before their death.
I'd love to see an Amazing Spider-Man 3 where Andrew Garfield comes out retirement, moves on from his lost love with a female cat thief and fights Bane, I mean, Venom
Greg should do a Heels season in review. For the next movie I can see the villain be Mr. Negative in charge of Feast and that would give Peter the emotional turmoil for Venom to take control for a MCU Venom story arc.
I get it, they hate tobey for whatever reason, but theyre gonna really sit there and say he wasnt expressing so much emotion when stopping Tom. He knows how far gone Peter can get lost if he kills, and wants to save him from what he lived in turning to the dark. That potential sacrifice from goblin still stabbing someone who saved him is what changed Tom’s Peter to save Norman. I get it, they’re mad not as many liked the Tasm movies, but damn
I think Dr Strange's behavior lines up perfectly with how he acted with Thor in Ragnarok. He didn't explain to Thor all the intricacies of the spell. He just did research and went to action. He did the same here, but Peter kept changing the variables.
It’s completely possible. That would be a great detail to add and fiege did say that phase four will be simultaneously interconnected between shows and movies.
I just want to know who the fuck threw that brick, weren't they on like the 4th-5th floor or something like that? Because that thing came flying through the window like they were on the ground level.
Willhem Dafoe was such a cartoon in the Raimi movie but man in this one he just nails this character of a split personality with his Norman side being so incredibly sympathetic as a mentally unwell person at his rock bottom pleading for help and his Goblin side being so insane and batshit evil.
It's implied that both green goblin and doc ock identities are public after their death. Sandman literally said he saw them in the news "Goblin died impaled by his glider and couple months later Ock drowned in the river"
The villains aren't being time traveled, they're just being sent to the place where they were previously standing; therefore at the end of the movie, they all reappear in their universe at the statue of liberty - however many days AFTER they were taken. The dilemma is that they know Spider-Man kills them eventually in a fight, therefore if they're sent back "cured" they won't be in conflict with their respective Spider-Mans anymore. (There's also a good chance Otto's Peter will be dead since he wasn't there to tell him how to destroy his fusion reactor lol)
@@loganbigmo It isn't. I just paid attention to the information given in this film and Venom. They were all displaced from the location they were standing in, meaning if they're send back, they'll appear where they're currently standing.
@@lex_rodriguez What I mean is, it's still time travel. Multiversal time travel. It's possible they're all going to end up at the Statue of Liberty in their respective timelines, but that's not _exactly_ confirmed
Think Greg misinterpreted MJ asking Garfield if he was ok. Wasn't because she knew about the inner turmoil, she was surprised to see him acting that way and didn't know why he was sad
I think Electro not knowing Garfield’s face but being affected by the spell is likely explained by Electro’s team up with Harry in ASM2. Harry could’ve told him Spidey was Peter Parker (maybe even on screen, I don’t remember) and that wouldn’t really mean much to Max, nor would he know what he looks like.
I think that we are meant to believe that the villains were dragged into the MCU just after they realized that Spiderman was Peter Parker: for Norman/Goblin, it was after that Thanksgiving scene, for Doc Ock, not 100%, for Sandman, it was at the end of Spiderman 3, for Dr. Conners/Lizard, it was before the school fight scene and for Electro, it was right before his death. So I think the only ones who would have died immediately after being sent back would have been Doc Ock and Electro. At least that's what I took from the film.
I do not like The Amazing Spider-Man films. I think Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the worst movie in the Spider-Man franchise. I am not a fan of Andrew Garfield Peter Parker in those films. Andrew Garfield was amazing in this film (pun intended)! He stole the show and was one of the highlights for me. One of the great things I'm noticing about these multiversal storylines is that they can recontextualize things that I might not have enjoyed and make them greater and I love that.
As much as I do think a lot of the bad decisions in Spider-Man movies over the years were his doing, the Avi Arad tribute feels 100% like a Kevin Feige choice because Feige's a good dude that would pay tribute to one of the people who gave him his start and has been associated with Marvel since the early 90s. We tend to associate Arad with Spider-Man mostly, but he founded Marvel Studios - at the time called Marvel Films - and he started producing for them with X-Men The Animated Series. I'm sure as soon as we get X-Men in the MCU we see a tribute to Lauren Shuler Donner in the credits for the same Feige connection reasoning.
I thought it was a really interesting thing to include in the credits… and you’re right that we usually associate Avi Arad with being the one that drove the Spider-Man franchise into the ground. Props to Kevin Feige for adding that in there.
As a big spiderman fan, seeing all three spidermans fighting multiple villains from the trilogies just blew my mind. Can't believe they actually did it.
I miss you guys. Hope you are enjoying vacation. Due to not having new kinds funny content coming in daily I may have listened to this episode like 20 times on podcasts
Very subtle Easter Eggs I found: Tom webbing cars to the bridge like in ASM1 Tom has a cut on his cheek that looks like Tobey’s scar in the end fight. Tom has his hair styled like Andrews when he takes his mask off several times. Tobey and Andrew talking about how their relationships are complicated is a callback to Peter and Harry talking in ASM2 about how dating and Peter’s life in general is complicated. Andrew Vs Tobey might be a reference to that ASM2 ad where there’s a reflection of Spider-Man in a window that’s a Chibi Spider-Man that mimics him, but obviously the pointing meme works too. They also use more orchestral choir and horn for Tom’s spider-man theme when Tobey and Andrew joined as a way to add their theme elements to his, which I hope they carry forward.
Tim you are so so SOOO damn right that the strange spidey fight is gonna be so underated becuase of all the crazy stuff in this movie. What a task they had in thinking how can spiderman outsmart and win a 1v1 battle with the master of mystic arts. It was fucking incredible and it was the first sign of many to come later in the movie that this movie is more than just a great excuse for a fun crossover
2:31:19 - No, no, that's the youth pastor face. It's the "Hey, you need to step back and breathe, what the snot are you DOING, man? Look at yourself! This is not how we do things! That is not how this works. You need to be responsi--remember the responsibility thing? I know how much it sucks, I know how much it hurts, but this is the time for that responsibility." look. Just with their eyes, Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland managed to re-enact the entire "Dude" conversation from Baseketball.
I haven't seen anyone talk about my favorite moment. When Doctor Strange pushes Peter's astral form out of his body, you can very faintly see his spidey sense around his head like the comics/games. I got so happy seeing that!
. . . . . . . . . . 2:03:22 "So, this is your plan, Peter? Hm? No lab, no facilities, just performing miracles in a condominium? Hm? What, are you going to cook up some cures in frozen burritos in a microwave?" "I could go for a burrito." "He's gonna kill us all!"
The subtext that the peters are also destined to die if sent back to their universe is fascinating. Both of them don’t get “cured” physically in any way, but rather their mental health. Both get to do something they need to do to move on and keep growing and living. Like all the villains apparently appeared right before their death and those peters weren’t so old. Obviously the actors are the age they are but it still ends up meaning something.
1:07:53 I paused to go listen to the theme song from succession because I’ve never watched the show and HOLY SHIT it friggin SLAPS! So much bass… and sleigh bells
Dr Strange cast a spell so the world would forget Peter Parker is SpiderMan. Then the spell was released at the end with Strange finishing the spell so why did Ned and MJ forget him completely surely they’d still remember Peter Parker just not that he’s Spidey
Also, a throwback to Thor, I believe it was him that said that there is no such thing as magic, just science that's much more advanced than humans had achieved right? So for Peter to see the math/science behind the magic and manipulate seems cool as hell.
Just crossed my mind for the next stage in Parker's life. What if, in the next triology, Peter sees Ed and MJ visiting NYC as an actual couple now. A bit like how Peter saw Betty in the old Stan Lee run. Peter has moved on and so have they. An acknowledging that people and things change, by Peter, that helps him move on and grow a bit more as a person.
Good point about Mysterio looming. The fact that they didn't use him means when he does show up it'll hit harder. And his absence was felt, because he could've shown up whenever.
It's 100% true though, we wouldn't have any of these movies (the MCU and the modern superhero landscape in general, let alone Spiderman movies) if not for Avi Arad convincing studios to invest hundreds of millions of dollars not just into any superhero movie (like Blade or X-Men before it), but comic accurate ones that wear their source material on their sleeve, and end up becoming the biggest success to boot. Kevin Feige didn't decide to start/try the MCU till after Avi Arad proved what was possible with Spiderman, it is single handlely responsible for damn near everything, whether we want to like it/admit it or not. It took decades of turndowns, bad scripts, unfaithful approaches, etc before 2002 finally happened, and the same thing has already been happening for a long time with the Metal Gear Solid movie, his next big goal in properly translating a video game adaptation to the screen, of which he too will get a lot of big credit for not letting that get messed up and helping the shift for video games. It is not to say that he's perfect or anything, he obviously was responsible for making Raimi have Venom in Spiderman 3 as well as a rushed Sinister Six side-plot setup in Amazing 2, but when it comes to the behind the scenes historical impact of certain specific people, Feige and many others have laudedly regarded him as the top dog Hollywood "believer" or "fighter" for getting us to the kinds of things we want to see happen. Even those first comic movies like X-Men and Blade were low budget and/or afraid to embrace their comic heritage, even if their success helped Avi's arguments for convincing Sony on Spiderman, it was still hella risk and lots of money, and it inspired Feige to take the risk to that next level with a shared universe. This is why Kojima gave/attached his MGS movie to Avi Arad, to make sure the creative integrity of the IP isn't rushed/compromised, regardless of how long it may take. This movie put hella RESPECT on Avi's name and the salt here is real since the credits were done by Marvel Studios and most likely probably Feige's idea, not anyone from Sony. The movie itself pays so much homage both literally and metaphorically to Sony's older movies, there’s a clear love and respect for them from Marvel regardless of how anyone feels about em. Tom's Peter goes from looking up to and modeling himself after MCU characters to molding himself after his 2 Sony predecessors, and its the most true Spiderman we've gotten so far in the MCU.
In Review requests: Twilight In Review Mid-90s Disney Original Films In Review I love when y'all review good bad movies. But also Matt Damon In Review. From his narration in Spirit, to his fights as Jason Bourne, to him farming potatoes on Mars, to him buying a zoo, I want 'em all.
I’ve gradually become more cynical about movies as I get older but this movie just meant so much to me. Loved every minute. Goosebumps when Matt Murdoch popped up. Tears and smiles throughout.
I like how the teacher who made the trophy case is proud that Peter is Spider-Man while also scared outta his mind that he may kill him if he doesn't get his way 😂
If Strange can delete the memory of Peter from people’s brains, as well as purging every physical evidence of his existence (phone texts, school records, JJJ’s news reports) from the entire world, why didn’t he delete the memory of the Infinity Stones from Thanos?
In the point of what peter was trying to do in “curing” the villains is basically a concrete application of the cure for what the villains’ thesis is which is the opposite of the “great power comes great responsibility” thesis of spiderman. This villains is basically the opposite of that ideology where they have power but they have abused or misused it. By stripping them of their “power”, he has effectively cured them. Power is both the disease and the cure. Love this movie so much.
