“I’ll be trapped in this... USELESS BODY” As someone with a family history of Huntingdon’s disease, hearing the desperation in the doc’s voice just broke me. Terrific voice acting right there
Lets give Norman Osborn some kudos here! He is literally dangling off a skyscraper, and he didn't give Otto one ounce of satisfaction. Norman Osborn in any universe, has some balls!
RIGHT? I love the look on Octavius face when he realises things aint going his way. you see his lip quivering, taking him back to the past again.. Made me laugh hard. I dont like Osborne, but he got my respect right there...
_"And, of course... You'll rest easy knowing your secret is safe with me."_ This is the saddest part of all. It is a desperate attempt at blackmail that illustrates any second chance given to Otto would be completely wasted. This one line dashes any hope of ever seeing him returned to the man he was.
The secret is Spider-Man's true identity. Otto knows he is Peter Parker. He brings this up when he is begging for help because he thinks he can scare Peter into doing what he wants, which he _never_ would have considered prior to his descent into madness. In translation: "Protect me from the authorities, or else I'll tell the world who you really are."
His web shooters were destroyed, he was severely injured twice, and he still didn’t give up. Spider-Man still risked his life and jumped off that building to catch that antiserum! This is without a doubt one of the greatest Spider-Man stories ever!
@@theysellsoulscheaphere8501 I think the story had some pacing issues (I think an extra 3 or so hours would've helped it) and more/better side/endgame content would've been appreciated but I personally really liked Spider-Man 2. I think the first game is always going to be my personal favorite but SM2 is a worthy successor.
“You knew!” It was one thing Otto attacking Spider-Man,a person he didn’t know, but he knew he was attacking his protégée (someone he knew worshipped him)
So basically Peter was shocked that regardless of knowing that Spiderman is parker, he still attacked nd tried to kill him all that time......the first "you knew" sounded shocked...... I knew that second "you knew" was a lil sad
someone who knew peter and in turn knew may, and that she was sick, and that otto knew he was actively fighting not only the person who worked with and worshipped him, but also the guy with the most motivation to get the sure, that he was actively and directly holding it back from him, it's a miracle peter still avoided lethal force but that's why he's spiderman and I'm not
The whole time leading up to this fight, Pete was trying to save Otto from himself. Learning that Otto knew he was Spidey all along...that he endangered him and his loved ones knowingly...that perhaps the monster Otto's become was there from the beginning...That's the tipping point. That's when Peter gives up on him. It's heartbreaking.
"Whoever saves one life saves the world enitre" - that's a Talmud quote (as used in "Schindler's List") used by Yad Vashem memorial when they give the award of Righteous Among the Nations for non-Jews whos saved Jews during Shoah.
I used to dream about having a Spider-Man game like this as a kid, and they beyond nailed it. It's actually underrated based on it's metacritic average alone. Masterpiece of a superhero game. Writing, graphics, sound and music, gameplay, enemy and level design. . . every aspect has love and attention poured into it.
This Guy that's great!! :D I just finished the main story today. I must admit, this is the best superhero game ever made. Sorry Arkham City, you were a great game too but now the no. 1 superhero game goes to Marvel's Spider-Man. This game made me rewatch the Spider-Man Animated series. (1994) for some reason. 🤔
Man. The parallels between Otto’s last scene in this game and The Green Goblin’s last scene in Spider-Man 1 are insane. In both instances, Peter had high admiration and respect for Norman and Otto, and the pain he felt having to fight them both is really something to take in. Insomniac really did their thing story wise. I can’t wait to see the next game and they decide to do.
I've actually seen a comment (either in this video or another one) that describes the game's final boss perfectly- it is a combination of the final fights from spiderman 1, 2 and the amazing Spider-Man 1
In her final moments, May encourages her nephew to let her die for the sake of others. Even though he has the cure with him, something that could save her life, she stands resolute, willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good. Aunt May is truly a superhero.
I kind of wish they use the blood sample they would have got it from her instead she could have been Ground Zero for healing everybody but it might take him more time to process it is the only catch I can think of why they didn't go that route
@@art23428 Games with good storylines are just as valid as good movies and books. Imagine thinking in 2023 that you can't appreciate a certain form of art because "it's just a game"...
I like how Spidey breaks Ock’s tentacle one point during the battle, he’s showing that he could easily have ended that fight if he wanted to, but he’s just a nice guy.
@@HoboTheHenry Spiderman is insanely strong in the comics. He's pulling his punches really hard. In one comic Doc Ock possess spiderman (I don't know the full details) and accidently punches Scorpions jaw off. If spiderman was okay with killing, he'd massacre the villains. The only thing stopping him is his own moral code.
@@weneedaladder8384 it’s like in Batman: Arkham Knight when Bruce gets taken over by a joker-like personality and just hammering down on the militia thugs, terrifying the shit out of them and almost killing them, even almost scaring Scarecrow himself.
"The truth... okay. The truth is, you were only ever worth a damn when you worked for me! The truth is you could never accept that I'm better than you! Your a failure Otto, and you always will be!" Damn, Norman will not take crap from anyone.
I love this version of Norman Osbourne. They aren’t pretending he was a good man before an experiment went wrong. His true personality is that he has no remorse and is motivated by his own selfish desires and greed. I think that whatever happens to him in a future game is only make those traits more intense. Can’t wait to see him in green goblin mode. As has been the case with other characters in this game, may be the most convincing iteration of the character. And don’t get me started on Harry Osbourne as Venom
@@nave712 na it’s cool to switch things up a little. If you think about it, Peter’s eventual showdown with Venom is gonna be way more emotional since it’s his best friend that’s being taken over by Venom, rather than Eddie Brock who he doesn’t know and wasn’t even introduced at all in this game.
@@VintageDev499 Eddie Brock is actually mentioned in one of the backpack collectibles. The farewell card from when Peter quit the daily bugle has a message from Eddie “It was great working with you!” That said, I’m fine with them switching things up, and I’m interested to see what they do with Harry Osborn venom.
Yea I was holding out pretty well...and then she said that line, and I broke into tears 😢 So happy I was sitting alone because I cried like a freakin baby
That line "You knew?" hit hard for me because I thought he meant "You knew? And thats why Aunt May is sick?" and thats why Otto's response was "I told you not to get in my way, this means too much to me." which makes Peter say " Not as much as it means to me!" But im hearing that ppl took his "You knew?" as meaning "You knew and you still tried to kill me?" Maybe I looked to far into it.
I think the first “you knew” meant that he still went after him despite knowing who he was and the second meant that he realized Otto knew Aunt May was sick from the Devil’s Breath and still went through with it. That’s why you see him fight more ferocious afterward.
@@thelevisullivan The first "You knew?" was in the sense of "Wait, you knew I was Spidey?" The second one puts more importance on the "knew" part and changes from a question to a realization, as in "You knew I was Spider-Man and yet you still tried to kill me, your own protegee, the person who helped and worshipped you so much!" . As such, the reason why you see him fight more ferocious afterwards is because until then, it was just a fight between two men with clashing ideals, different objectives and ways of achieving them. But after realizing that Otto knew, it became personal for Peter. He got angered knowing that Octavius would kill his close ones to achieve his goals.
That and his plead that "it wasn't him" is actually true. The neural interface completely changed his personality due to his neurologic disorder in combination with a flawed implant.
18:36, This scene, in particular, has always struck me as both sad and powerful. Otto, once a beloved man in the community, the greatest friend and father-figure that Peter has ever had, a man who wanted to change the world for the better, is now sitting in a cold prison cell after losing everything and everyone in his life. He threw away everything for the sake of vengeance. He became a failure, just like what Norman said he was.
There's something about this fight that really tugs at your heartstrings. It really shows that the toughest fights are ALWAYS with those closest to you. You can really FEEL Peter wrestling with the emotional struggle of fighting Octavius; just knowing that he is beyond saving, but not wanting to believe it. I mean, Peter WORSHIPPED Otto since he was six years old. When Peter screamed "You were everything I wanted to be!" it just left me sobbing. Adventure... Action... Humor... Tragedy. This is everything a Spider-Man video game should be, and Hollywood should be taking notes.
If you went back to Octavius Lab after defeating him, you can see that he planned this all along. He started upgrading all the sinister six equipment and planned the breakout from the raft at the beginning of the game. This is Octo all along
Also knowing he was willing to kill peter, since he knew he was spiderman all along just hurts cause peter only ever wanted to help him but Otto was sinister enough to try and kill him multiple times
This game has alluded so much to Raimi trilogy and they did so perfectly without being cheesey. Loved every minute of this game. I rarely do plat on a game and I knew had to do this one
Did the son died even tho he’s still alive speaking on the phone with Peter Parker. The green goblin will find a cure for Norman Osborn no question that he will be a big bad villain in the sequel. Maybe The Demongoblin, hobgoblin, carnage, and venom can also join in the the sequel as big bad villains or dlc side missions villains.
after finishing spiderman 2, i feel that this story was way more impactful than spiderman 2. The ending here made me cry when i first finished the story, but in spiderman 2 i didnt really feel emotional like i did in spiderman 1
@@ammad4394same bro and I feel like Peter wasn’t the same like I can’t look at the one in this video and the one in spiderman 2 it’s like the remodel was like two different people.
A perfect story in my opinion. Loved the Breaking Bad style story for Doctor Octopus, and Peter being a hero of epic proportions taking him down. Utter perfection. I wish the Spidey movies were this good. This was better than most of the Marvel movies too. The character designs were astounding.
"The hardest decisions require the strongest will" - Thanos This was the theme of the Game Peter letting Doc Oc and Aunt May Go And many other points in the game
Government wouldn't like for Spider man to have blood on his hands, especially since it's the mayor, painfully, he didn't had a choice but to let him live, or he would've been known as a wanted threat to the community, no more neighborhood spider man for his sake
I... Cried..... Anut may I will love anut may for Toby megruie Spiderman movies especially the second when Doc Oc was the Villian I loved it when she took her umbrella and swat at his face good love her.
AMBUKNIGHT She always knew he was Spider-Man. In Spider-Man 2 when he quit being Spider-Man, Aunt May helped him realize the good he was doing for people.
Seriously how is Doc Ock able to take all those hits from Spidey, even if he is holding back? The old man's a champ for not even breaking a sweat after being continuously stomped on the ribs.
Its explained in comics the arms turn off his pain receptors as a defense. So Otto can't feel pain as much as a normal person, allowing him to take a ton of punishment. Spiderman also pulls his punches so he doesn't severely hurt anyone. So doc ock probably feels very little when hit by Spidey
I love it, throwbacks to so many film moments as well. The Lizard crushing Spidey's webshooters at the top of Oscorp tower, the bond between Parker and Otto, the arms and their control. Heck, trying to bait Peter into freeing him was like Osborn in Spider-Man 1. It was almost like Spider-Man 2 without the redemption moment.
Actually, Otto was not trying to bait Peter into freeing him. At first. He was being true at that moment, but right at the end, where Peter was finally going to free him, his pseudopods took over his brain again. Great writing.
@@RandomThings12 actually if you looked at Otto's lab either after getting the antidote to scorpion toxin or after the game ending you will see that he was planning the raft break out and upgrading the sinister six for a good while, more likely since Osborn pulled away his funding and took away his stuff from the lab.
Y'know, I liked the movies, I REALLY liked Spider-Man 2, Homecoming, and how Tom Holland has portrayed Parker...but I think THIS is my favourite portrayal of Spider-Man in any medium. THIS...is a great superhero experience. The ending NAILED it. Props to all the actors in this. It was amazing. Also, seems to be kind of a 'screw you' to OMD, doesn't it? I did NOT see that coming at all.
This spiderman game is better than mcu spiderman IMO, dark, gritty n has a great story reminds me of the 90s spiderman cartoon, love that it's dark n gritty like the Arkham games
@@xlostagentz9473 Bruh Spectacular Spider-Man, Tom Holland's Spider-Man and this game shit on The Rami trilogy. Sorry to say it but they were good but not the best
thi situation kinda reminds me of the on with Liz father in Homecoming wear he finds out peter is SPider man but he doesnt tell the villains who spider man is and in a way protects him
Well, it does remind me of thinking that at first the demons are the reasons for chaos but finding the conductor of evil that leads everything of evil? Yeah, this is too much.
This fight is so good, especially when you take into account that their reasons are parallels. Both Peter and Otto feel a mixture of Anger, Guilt, and Fear which makes this scene so powerful
Tracy's Damn Child I meant the comics, although I will say as good as the mcu spidey movies have been this is in a lot of ways the best spidey movie we've ever gotten
16:54 besides the mantra he's lived by all these years about power and responsibility, it's what he said to Octavius earlier. He said to him that all we can do is what we think is best, even if it hurts like hell. This is him walking the walk. Making that very difficult choice in this catch 22 situation. And May herself knows what has to be done. In that sense that she is also a hero, and that is where Peter gets his heart from the most. It's Ben's words and May's example that fuel his career as Spider-Man. There's just no other way, and he knows that deep down. I recently lost my grandmother a month ago and, like peters aunt, she had a huge role in the person I've become. I've been where Peter is right now. Cried those same tears. Still do. This just feels very surreal watching.
@@gearsy3358 No I have. I watched Ben 10 Alien Force alot growing up and have been playing Sunset Overdrive a fair amount recently, but I never knew he could pull off this level of emotional range until now.
fr we had to painfully witness otto's slow descent into madness while you literally couldnt do anything about it. harry justifiably got pissed abt peter and then got corrupted by an evil alien which wasnt his fault. the weight just isnt there at all, the conflict lies in no ones hands bc both harry and peter were corrupted beyond their control sorry for the rant
@@godzelda123 That part confused me at first but actually, Otto assumed that Peter is the maker of the suit, not Spiderman himself, which he was lying and already knew that he's Spiderman.
@@hellstrom4209 I think a more plausible approach is initially Otto thought of that, but then he realised Peter's lateness to work, coinciding with the news and the recent influx of villains. Otto being a genius and highly intelligent he probably figured out that Peter was in fact Spiderman
It makes the most sense because the disease would of killed harry by then, so they needed a way to explain why harry is still alive and it's been shown before that the symbiote can even subdue cancer.
I'm on the cusp of playing Miles Morales so I had to come back to the first games ending and everything about it is so perfect. Peter's rejection of his former hero, pleading with him to stop. Yuri Lowenthal's performance through is fantastic. The emotions on every character's face is scarily accurate to how I would imagine them in this scenario. The double use of the "You knew?" phrase, first time in shock and comtempt, the second in relief, almost like part of him knew May knew and is happy to finally drop the facade. The new Spider-Man suit specific to this part of the story showing Peter is at his lowest and most serious. The voice actor for Otto is impressive too, portraying a deeply flawed man who has fallen from any sort of decency he once had. He's still the antagonist but with a sense of anger and vulnerability that makes him a really great interpretation of the character. Even the score is used effectively here and I wasn't a big fan of the Spiderman OST. These two scenes back to back nearly made me cry just like it did two years ago. What a fantastic game!
And the difference at the end when he’s with may and says you knew? Like the parallels considering may and Otto were really the last parental figures he had while one has lost his way in revenge and his new power. While May brings it right back home and tells him how proud she is while Otto in the start of the game would have absolutely been proud of Pete as well before the arms took him over.
Aside from how weak Spidey is. This Spiderman has been active for almost a decade, and yet he's still getting his ass kicked by Otto? A guy who's never been in a fight, or even been a villain for more than a week.
I mean he's using arms that modify his personality (which also probably includes his fighting skills) and also give him strength and reach several times greater than anyone else.
Absolute masterpiece that they gave the decision of what to do with the serum solely on peter instead of having aunt may tell Peter what is right, making Peter make the hardest decision by himself. This is Spider-Man displaying his most iconic virtue, responsibility.
To all you people comparing the movies with this game. Its not a fair comparison since the game has LOTS of hours to develop the story and characters compared to the movies which only has like 2 hours runtime to give depth to story and characters.
It's completely fair actually. You're making an assumption that fleshing out a story over a greater number of hours is easier but the truth is that it can be even more difficult.
To be fair, The movies can in fact be longer if taking into account how much sequels there is, The game with just the cutscenes come out to 2 and a half hours, While the Toby films had 3 movies with an hour and a half or more, The amazing spiderman had two movies and games and so on, So it might seem unfair on a first look, But on a closer look it is somewhat fair, However it would be unfair to compare it to a one off spiderman movie
Did it. Finally beat the game today! I can't believe what they did in the ending. The final boss wasn't too hard. This was truly one of the best Spider-Man video games I've ever played. The top of the line graphics, the combat system, the cool collectibles and upgrades, and a very well put together story that holds a lot of weight.
Yuri definitely deserved that nomination for Best Performance at the 2018 Game Awards alongside Melissanthi Mahut, Bryan Dechart, Christopher Judge, and Roger Clark
@@samzorn4656 Too bad he didn't win. Or, Dechart. Can't speak for Red Dead Redemption 2 since I didn't play it, but Spider-Man and Detroit rocked that year. I took a day off from work just to buy a copy of Detroit when it launched, then I celebrated finishing a grad class by buying Spider-Man! Wasn't disappointed, dude.
The “U were everything I wanted to be!” And”U say you’d never leave me,you promised”and “Do what u think is best doc, that’s all any of us can..”rlly got to me
You guys notice how in almost all of those fights it involved Peter fighting a former idol/father-figure that left the whole fight feeling just as depressive as it was awesome? I feel like moments like this show Peter's life really sucks sometimes.
@@matthewmason7792 His scream gave it away a little haha. Just make Doc Ock's voice a little higher pitched and bam! Doc Rig. Now I want to see a mod where someone replaces Doc Ock's lines with Rigby's
I love Peter's line at 8:36. While he's fighting to save the city from Devils Breath, Aunt May's life is the main motivator. This is one of the only times where he can choose to be selfish.
"I'll be trapped in this USELESS BODY!" He says, after taking how many punches to the face and full Spider-Jumps to the sternum? Not to mention falling off a sky-scraper and through a building. That fat doctor can take punishment like he's Bruce Willis in Unbreakable.
@@RandomThings12 Arms on your back don't help protect your rib-cage from being crushed from kick by a person who can throw cars. Might as well say Magneto's legs can't be broken because he wears a helmet.
@@michaeldougherty6036 His body is getting worse and less functional with the time. Soon enough, his body will be useless, hence why he's so attached to the arms.
Apparently in the lab you can see that the green bodysuit Otto wears has been modified to serve as powerful body armor. His notes say its purpose is to protect the wearer in case of a fall.
People would say that is unrealistic how Otto being a normal human doesn’t seem to get damaged by spidey’s attacks. But I want to think it’s because Peter is hitting him as soft as he can, because he doesn’t want to hurt him because he saw him as a father
blumoonz 2 years for 20 hours of game play and texture, I hope the devs make a movie about spider man whether animated or not but Id like it not animated
Almost two years ago, I finished the story in this game. It was the first Spider-Man video game I had played and all I gotta say is WOW! From the voice acting to the animation and scenery of New York they did such a fantastic job. I loved Martin Li’s backstory and the soundtrack was incredible! Aunt May’s death had me crying, the twist where Harry is still alive, and seeing the Stan Lee cameo in the beginning was adorable! All in all a great game 11/10!
@@DanielEdmister nah. Marvel kept fucking up the intensity by adding terrible jokes. Which is why the deaths didnt really leave in impact. Except for Spider Man
The fact that this voice actor is the same one who voiced Rigby on Regular Show speaks volumes to their talent. I love this story because, with Far From Home coming this Thursday and Friday, we are going to get a sense of how dark the dynamic between Spider Man and Otto Octavius will be. This is why I love Spider Man movies and video games. The story knows how to convey the right amount of bleakness and darkness in the villains Spider Man fights
