The reactions to the cringey old article brought this already awesome video to the next level. haha. If they wanted to take a cue from Zendaya, Pete would pick up a Contax T2. I was the same age for Raimi's Spider-Man, too ... and it's still my favorite, though the current Spidey is very good.

@@AzrielKnight If you can inspect it in person, make sure to listen closely. I've read that over time, a piece of rubber wears out inside, then causes electrical contact and leads to botched exposure. There's a "clack" when you move the cocking lever a few millimeters after you've taken a shot. If it's dull, it's alright, if you hear metal on metal, it's probably worn out. Aside from that, they're lovely cameras, a bit large for rangefinders, but solidly built, and the F/1.7 got me good photos even wide open in a very dark forest.

Another common issue is the electronics... I have 2 that are in need of repair for the electronics (one has a loose wire that is in a spot that isn't easy to reach with a soldering iron and I'm too lazy to try to do more of a teardown at the moment, and one I haven't taken the time to open up) And the prices are getting stupid for a tested and working camera Also anyone else find it funny that the Spiderman that uses an electro 35 is the one who fights electro

There were 3-6 different versions of the Canon F-1, regarding the way you count it. 1. The original Canon F-1 with serial numbers below 100.000. There is a difference in the motor connection, which has to be changed with the later introduced motor drive. 2. The F-1 Original with Serial numbers from 100.000. This has the alterations for the motordrive built in. 3. The F-1n from 1976. This Type has some minor interior changes in the shutter, a memory Holder on the back and two part Film advance lever. 4. The F-1n High Speed with a fixed motordrive and without an additional film advance lever. 5. The New F-1 from 1981, an entirely new designed model with an new line of finders, motordrives, screens and so on. 6. The new F-1 High Speed with an build-in motor drive and a fixed mirror. It reached 25 frames per second as a still film camera. Original price in Europa was around 25.000 DM at this time. There were some other versions for technical or medical/ scientific work, but they were manufactured only at special order. In my opinion the F-1 was the best camera System of its time. Nice detail: With the Canon Flash Coupler Type F you Gould get a regulär hot shoe with the F-1 and F-1n. It was fixed in the left side flash rail and the round viewfinder thread.

Love this kind of exploration of cameras in other media. I suspect production designers on mainstream movies have some go-to models of film camera that are particularly iconic and/or appropriately nostalgic. There’s nothing particularly sexy about the modern, blobby curvature of most 90’s SLRs, so it makes sense to harken back to decades when cameras practically look appropriately mechanical and hard-edged.

Recently I've seen a Mamiya TLR in The Parent Trap, and the Nikon F or F2 in Jaws, as well as Press cameras in all sorts of older movies. What drives me crazy is the shot through the viewfinder with wildly inaccurate focusing screens being depicted lol drives me crazy.

The Canon F-1n with AE-FN prism was the second camera that I purchased for myself (having used Minolta, Pentax, Canon and also Mamiya RZ and 645 at college). I bought it new in 1986 for $529. Several years later, I worked at the store managing the used gear department. In seven years there you can imagine the variety of gear I was able to play with…but that F-1n was still my workhorse.

WOW I didn't realise that the F2 was so expensive when new. I remember seeing this camera of his when on holiday to St Tropez back in the 80's later in life my dad gave it to me to test my abilities to photograph woman's football a big thing and a niche market. Dad also gave me a cherished Yashica electro 35 thank you Azriel I didn't even know that this camera to was featured in a movie to. Amazing! I think from my television production days that as a stills photographer when working on set cameras had to be blacked out with gaffa tape and medium format cameras put into a blimp. I would imagine that they would borrow a camera from the photographer for the filming, has the added bonus that they wouldn't have to pay the camera manufacturer any royalties to. It's surprising to note that the first aired Spider-Man was before the internet. I'm surprised it got so famous as it did without the world wide web 😂

I was 16-17 years old in 1976-77, and these SLR cameras might as well be located in another Universe. All I could affort, was a cheap Agfa Clack. It was okay, though. Shot a load of pictures with it, and it was better than nothing.

Around 00:50, you mentioned Peter's cameras are usually made up. That's true! But the picture you used for Spider-Man's belt camera actually comes from one of the Official Handbooks to the Marvel Universe, and that one actually *does* name Peter's camera! It's a modified Widelux Panaromic camera body. Presumably an 80s model given the time that book was published.

That's awesome! Do you have a link?
@ChateauLonLon
@ChateauLonLon 5 месяцев назад
@AzrielKnight RU-vid won't let me post the link! Is there anywhere I can share it with you privately? The actual source is the "Official Handbook to the MARVEL Universe Deluxe Edition" (1985-1988), Issue #12 page #29. That diagram you posted had basically all the information from that book in it. I'm sure there's random comic issues that have gone more into it. To be totally honest, the camera drawn in the Handbook doesn't look a whole lot like the camera it's supposedly based on, but it's still pretty cool! Spidey's modified the externals and internals of the camera... Externals: - Original Widelux Panoramic (140) Camera Body - Original Wide Angle View Finder - Film Advance and Shutter Crank Mechanism Removed and Sealed - Strap Lugs Filed Off - Leather Removed and Black Enameled - Custom Film Rewind Lever - Spinning Lens Assembly Internals: The internal modifications seem a bit unrealistic, but I've no idea. Here's what it says... - Film Transport Couple and Right-Angle Drive Train (Salvaged from Nikon FM) - Motor Drive Power Circuit Boards - Custom Fabricated Automated Motor Drive - Attachment Screw - 4 Convential AA Size Batteries - Silicon Blue Photo Diode - 3 Circuit Board Custom Exposure Electronics (Programmed for Police Recording Film Rated at ASA 6400)

The Canon New F-1 is the perfect camera for Tobey Maguire's Spiderman. He's an aspiring photographer working for the Daily Bugle and couldn't afford the newly introduced DSLRs at the time. So he uses an older Pro SLR and it was probably handed down from Uncle Ben. In the rest of the trilogy, Tobey Maguire continues using the New F-1 even when digital was starting to become commonplace.

Aha! At 8:27 in your video the POV shot through the camera from the film is not correct. The Electro 35 series did not have a split-image or micro-prism ring for focusing. It was a range finder and had the typical overlayed image that you line up with the actual image from the viewfinder (and bright lines for what is in frame). Plus two lit arrows at the very top of the viewfinder to indicate over or under exposure. I have a goodly bunch of various Electro 35 models -- great cameras for either manual metering or messing around with "compatible" batteries. But great lenses -- heavy monsters, but easy to focus/shoot.
