It was because they did not want it to take away from their single player experiences. That, and the fact that live service multiplayer games based around superheroes have not been received well in recent years. Marvel's Avengers and Suicide Squad being the two prime examples. Alas, I'm a bit disappointed that The Great Web got canned, but at the same time, I understand why Sony pulled the plug on it.

This was supposed to be a live service game that's why they canceled it, BUT this idea still could've worked not as a live service but as a dlc online multiplayer expansion for spideman 2 just imagine how great this would have been

I honestly feel this was canceled because Sony was trying to force Insomniac into shifting gears into a live-service title. Same thing happened to Factions 2 over at Naughty Dog
Tell me, why should we force insomniac to waste their assets and time on it? We're better off with Spiderman 3 and wolverine. Also don't forget the layoffs at the company, meaning they can't take a loss with a failed game.
I wanna draw your attention to the “Be Greater… Together” slogan. They used that for Spider-Man 2, so this game and trailer were likely made before SM2 and the removal of the Chrysler building.
Funnily they used one of the artworks of Spiderman Unlimited in this trailer too lol The image of Mysterio and the three spiders are from The mobile game

@@Spidey_62 Yeah I'm not trying to shit on it too hard. A game doesn't have to be an inspired work of art to be fun when it can just be a game for the boys. It definitely would have come out half-baked though. That's what invariably happens when publishers demand a developer make what's popular instead of what they're good at. See Suicide Squad.
This definitely looks like a dlc game mode for Spider-Man 2. They should just convert all the progress they have into couch co-op so they don’t have to pay for live service for a game that is basically left for dead. Besides, you can see there’s like millions of re-used assets. For a Spider-Verse styled game it’s literally what I just said, an extension of Spider-Man 2 and it’s mechanic’s. All they have to do is add some polishes and remove the amount of players.

This is a game I would definitely play with friends if it actually was released today, I hope Insomniac can return to this when Beyond The Spiderverse releases in the future

I feel like the story around this game's making and cancellation is it was made to jump on the live service trend, but then seeing that most people were fed up with live services decided to pull the plug on it
If they are smart they release this as a free to play game have people buy in game currency to get other spider characters across the spider verse,alternate costumes and they can change the villain you fight weekly it will make insomniac plenty of money so they can go all out on the actual story line games
I can see this type of game mode being offered in SM3, with Silk being teased at the end of SM2 it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that they’ll add other spider people as well. 4 player lobbies where you don’t choose your spider person would be a win for me.

As much as it sounds cool I don’t think it would be that fun. I just don’t see much cooperation available in the combat system the Spider-Man games have. Not to mention it would definitely be live service with a load of micro transactions

Insomniac got hacked and tons of stuff was leaked, including this. Also most of this is just concept art, yes there's gameplay footage but actually looking at it and you realise it's still was a work in progress
People need to remember this game wasn't cancelled. It wasn't even developed. The lead designer made this trail to show whag they can make they where given a 2029 release window. But they wouldn't have time. Insomniac have deep breaths. Wolverine, venom, Spider-Man 3, x-men 1, x-men 2, x-men online and a new superhero IP in the works. All that by 2032-33. So be happy it wasn't planned they were given the window but never started developing it because Insomniac didn't have time and the ceo's never planned it.
This would've been one of the coolest Spiderman games of all time and would've been cooler if it was released a month after spider man 2 was released since people thought Spiderman 2 would have multiplayer which it didn't so interesting.
Knowing how awesome the company is, I would say we might get a game like this in the future. They listen to the fans. If enough fans want this, they might just do it
Seeing this cool but also shows me that spiderman work better as “alone“ Hero and not a spiderfamily, this makes him more special, giving 5 characters nearly the same powers can harm that if it is not used properly or used in small doses
I mean i dont know what else were they planning on doing with the whole collecting the spider bots thing and then the cut scene after you collect them all but definitely would of been dope if this was apart of that.
This was probably planned to be live service only and they knew it wasn't sustainable. With the hatred people had over SSquad, they probably didn't wanna risk it.

I felt pike it was simple proof of concept but I feel like Live service still need story. Who know maybe one was planned but yeah story is absolutely needed in live service.
I really hope they treat this like how the Deadpool movie was made. Trailer leaked and was supposed to be cancelled but upon seeing the feedback from fans, they made it full-length.
Sony, everyone who is a fan of Spiderman really wanted an online experience with friends. Why would you cancel this? You couldve made it where players could have customizable suits and set up unlockables and some of them with pay walls. Fans wouldn't have cared they wouldve given you so much money for this experience.
They didnt want to make this because they didnt want to make a game with live service elements Like the concept of a game without being a live service is a foreign concept
Honestly make this a Spiderman 2 dlc? Like it would make loads of sense. Start the story off with miles only then you get Peter Parker out of retirement and then you just a unlock bunch of spider peeps and online match making and boom game of the year again! Have a series of story lines that each unlock new playable spider peeps until you have everyone.
