That wall drill is just what I needed. This week I managed to get a sore shoulder due to that side arm swing motion, now I can improve my arm swing even better and minimize the risc of injuring my shoulder again!!
My daughter is 15 years old, right-handed, & undersized (5'6") for an OH. She's struggling with getting her left arm down near her stomach or her side (almost as if she doesn't have enough time to put it up, then get it down before hitting the ball). She also bends to the left in the air too much. Very similar to what you said about cheating during the wall drill explanation. Please help. Oh, and you should know, you're a hero in our house Coach Donny.
Going on a bit of a rant… I have a 6th grade daughter that loves volleyball. I don’t know volleyball fundamentals so I’ve been following Coach Donny for about two years, teaching my daughter these fundamentals and she has exponentially gotten better every year. But there girls at our high school varsity level that teach her bad habits and tell her to not do some of these techniques in the mini-clinics they put on. My daughter has actually gotten in trouble for critiquing them for their spiking technique. I tell her to ignore them because that’s why they don’t compete at a high level and don’t make it very far in tourney play. Thank tou Coach Donny
Good on her, sometimes it’s better to go with your own technique compared with the conventional method. Everyone’s body’s are different so there are always different types of approaches to how one plays. Like the good old saying, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it
The difference in my arm swing power after using your method is unbelivable, I didn't know I could even hit a volleyball this hard till now. Great video, thx a lot :D
is the difference in using this technique compared to the one you used previously that much? im new to volleyball but trying extremely hard to improve so could following this help me that much?
@@noahbrown8801 there is a huge difference , watch his other video on how to get a higher vertical and combine it with this, it helped me jump higher and strike the ball much harder
@@noahbrown8801 go look hoshina ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iory4RK_CZ8.html if you really want to do the spyke technique that fits you, this video is not that good as it seems, if you have a really high jump you should try doing a circular motion (donny is actually doing a snap technique but he didn't bring it up) i really suggest you watch the video i just shared.
That wall drill is super helpful. I didn't realize I've been doing a side arm swing this whole time. Could you give some stretches that help with arm and shoulder flexibility? I have poor arm mobility and would like to increase my range.
1. power from backswing and bodyweight, hip and shoulder rotation, elbow extension ,wrist flexion, arm speed 1st position nike/ attack pos. 2. backswing elastic loading 3. load for spike opening shoulders and hips 4. elbow almost straight lead hand slightly in front of shoulder, reach up to maximize torque 5. elbow back and generally up on back swing 2nd positition high elbow 6. rotate lead hip slightly bring front arm down and right elbow up, rotate both shoulders 7. up elbow close to ear, low or side elbow bad for shoulder 8. both elbows narrow, close to midline 3rd position extended hook 9. extend elbow, hook ball with wrist flexion 10. other elbow down to side or stomach, keeps rotation narrow to stay tall extra 11. open up thin 12. rotate keep elbow up 13. contact ball with straight elbow
Very nice guide! I have facing a issue where shooud be the contact point when i'm hitting, over the head? A litte bit in front? When im hitting the ball most of them go out by a litte margin, and i fell im too under de ball!? Can you show a video where to hit the ball in the air?
Coach Donny! I remember my arm feeling like it was about to fall off at the end of adult nationals 10 years ago playing with you. I wish you would have just told me that it was my internal rotation! But maybe you thought I learned how to swing properly in college lol. Great video and I asked my son to start watching your channel. Glad to see you're still at it.
I never really thought about the in between positions of my arm swing. I just did it. But now as I get older I see that I can do better in a sense. I really wish I had these resources back in hs, but I'm also a lot more mature and knowledgeable since hs. I'm trying to retrain myself bc my rotator cuff hurts after spiking. I don't think it's just bc I'm getting older so I'm trying to focus on technique
One thing Ive learned since my kids started playing is how much of volley and tennis translates. In particular the serve motion and power sources. Im going to try the compact load and rotation on my serve and i think i have my elbows out too much which would slow down shoulder and hip rotation.
Hey, could you make a video on power tipping? It has become more popular in pro play recently and I am struggling to understand how to do it properly without causing a mistake, always looks like a dunk in pro play, ngl.
Something I struggle with is the correct spacing between myself and the ball and contacting the ball at the peak of my arm swing and the right part of my hand (i.e. not fingers or wrist). Are there any exercises you'd recommend to practice the distance and timing of your arm swing to where the ball will be?
Hey coach Donny, I'm a setter but I only play second set and for at most 3 rotations since when im on the court we run a 6-2 but when the other setter is on we run a 5-1 can you please help me get off the bench more and maybe even a starter? I'm serious about volleyball and willing to do anything to get ahead. I have already watched and practiced all your setting videos and my jump float is pretty good as well.
Hey coach donny, could you do a video where you explain the wrist snap and the ball contact to create top spin? I manage to do it in standing position, but when spiking i cant loosen my wirst to create top spin and i end up hitting with a flat hand. Furthermore the follow-through part is difficult for me because i keep hitting on the net then. Any tips would be appreciated too Greetings from Germany🇩🇪
Hey coach Donny, Can you go into further detail about wrist flexion and how to hit with topspin? I've always been complimented on my hitting form but have never been able to consistently hit with topspin. The majority of my spikes are like knuckleballs coming down. I've been practicing getting topspin with roll shots and placing the ball, however once I start jumping and trying to hit the ball harder I seem to lose the ability to get top spin. I constantly try to remind myself to keep a loose wrist, hit on top of the ball and snap down yet still nothing. Do you have any tips, tricks, or practice exercises to help with this? I also tend to find that its easier to get topspin (on the rare occasion I do) when I'm doing sharp angle shots where I'm snapping my wrist more at an angle and hitting the ball not straight on (although while I do get more topspin a lot of the time there is side spin or I guess the ball spinning at an angle where it then curves). Thanks a ton Coach, also keep up the great work love all the videos and the vibes you give. All the effort you put in shows, especially when EVERYBODY who plays volleyball knows of THE COACH DONNY!
Hey Coach, Thanks for this useful video, but i am struggling to swing hard because i can't "wip" the ball completely, some times it seems like I contact the ball in the right spot with great sound but it don't feel any power at all
I have a question about the space between me and the ball i m hitting the ball lower than what it should be how i can progress it? I really wanted to thank you coach I started volleyball past year and learning it from you really appreciate it❤
hello! I'm from Brazil and I have a question about this shoulder roll. I'm a beginner and I train twice a week, whenever I make the move in the air to hit the ball, as soon as I hit it my shoulder hurts a lot and besides the pain it's sore. for the last 2 months my shoulder hurts when flexing backwards at certain angles and it is really hindering my performance with spikes... please help me!!! and I would also like to suggest subtitles in Portuguese, because google's automatic translation sucks! I love your work and I'm super motivated to train
@@ElevateYourselfOfficialupdate: I played in division 3 as a libero, my hits are easily division 4 level too. The improvement after your videos was insane. I’m now coaching girls and hope to pass on what I’ve learnt
I started playing a few months ago and I’ve developed a bad habit with my arm swing. Everyone says it’s looks like I swing like a windmill and I think it’s because I don’t whip my arm. Is there something I could think of while hitting to help correct this? I can do it properly on the ground but once I’m jumping my form falls apart.
Hey, i know this is a month late but when i hit i think of myself as like an archer holding back the string of my bow, it is more so the elbow motion of reaching back and really getting that’s good “stretch” don’t act like ur holding a string when u hit! Also i like to think that the more you think about it the “worse” it can get :) once you get the motions down you’ll get it! also making sure ur body is stable in the air and ur now all over the place. If you’re finding that your body is out of control it may be that you need to strengthen your core to hold your body in the right position or you might be too eager to hit the ball and may be coming in to hot then your body can handle atm. Hope this help
thanks very ,much i bet this exercise will help with my spike because when i spike the ball it always goes to the right but now it wont be going to the right thanks to this training
And another question it’s about my wrist when contacting the ball sometimes i hit the the ball more on top and and sometimes on the side any drills to fix it?
I play for my school volleyball team, and in that team, there are 3 smaller teams. The A team is the best of the best, the B team is the team of people who just lack a few skills but still play decent, and the C team has people who are beginners and are looking to learn volleyball. I was put in the A team at the beggining of the season, but then I was downgraded to the B team. I think it's mainly because I wasn't able to spike very well. So, this year, my goal is to make the A team and stay in it. I hope this video can help me.
Hi coach Donny, first of all, love your videos, great content, I have a question, what is the best to contact the ball while hitting, where should I hit the ball, from your experience of course :D
Hi coach I am always watching your videos because I want to learn better opposite spiker. I was playing opposite spiker more than 3 months but I don't know how to spike like you but I hope you see this comment coach please help me to be a good opposite spiker ❤
Can you please please make a video about arm swing after taking off. I have seen your arm swing mechanics video and i followed it. But when i jump my mind goes blank and dont know what iam doing and i always hit ball out or in the net. Please HELP ME 🙏😭😩also YOU MADE ME PLAY VOLLEYBALL AND IAM GRATEFUL TO YOU. LOBE YOU ❤❤❤
Hey coach so where is it beneficial to flex vs relax, I remember u said flex the wrist at the end of the motion but are there other parts of ur upper body that u should be flexing and when?
Love the videos. Question: why would bringing the hitting arm back along the path right of the head be better than looping it over the forehead? Seems like looping over the forehead provides more momentum and is a lot more fluid than going straight into a spiker pose in the air. It also seems like hitters spend more time than necessary with their hitting arm back while in the air waiting to get to the ball when bringing it straight back. I've only seen one video on YT showing the looping upswing, but it has helped me get up higher on my hitting.
I am having 5'5" feet, with good defence and great palm contact , but net close jump is poor , suggest me idea and give me a perfectionists tips and tricks to be a great smasher of my state
Holy crap, you’re the first person that’s actually explained the seemingly impossible to understand correct arm swing. No matter how much I’ve researched or asked people I think I finally understand how to do it! I can’t wait to try the wall trick tomorrow and show my kids! Thank you!
When i am playing with some of my friends the big hitters always seem like they get perfect contact with the ball, I always end up hitting under, not snapping enough or just getting bad contact on my hand are there any good drills to help this? I feel like my contact with the ball is limiting how hard I can hit because I feel like I am only hitting at like 65-70% a majority of the time
Hi Donny, I've heard about doing the reverse s-curve during my arimswing from my coach, but I use a high bow-and-arrow swing (which is what i copied from fran ruiz as a short hitter). Is there any way to incorporate a reverse s-curve into a high bow and-arrow swing?
Hello sir. I’ve been facing a issue that while spiking my spike goes like a float. My arm doesn’t go all the way down. It has led to get the ball out of court. Can u pls make a video related to it like drills exercises to over come it.?
Coach when I am hitting a ball , then why I am getting pain in my shoulder, amd after that it looks to me I can't smash second one with power... Plzz help?
I know how to do it and i did it 3 times perfectly(I'm still kinda new)nishida form so I'm just checking(edit:My whole upper body rotates so fast including my head that I actually got dizzy spiking so hard once)
My shoulder hurts sometimes when I’m swinging down, it seems like the harder or faster I swing the more irritation there is. It’s not terrible pain but I can feel something when I’m going from phase 2 to 3 in the spike
Hi coach, i have got a very strange question. I used to play soccer, then i played basketball for some years. I am right handed, using my right hand and arm. But i am left footed. Basically my lower body acts like a lefty and my upper body acts like a righty. When i am spiking, because my penultimate step is my right foot my body rotates to left side, which makes difficult for me to hit with my right hand. I tried to change my stepping so my pentultimate step would change, it makes me feel super weird and i feel like i cant jump as high as i normally can because of muscle memory. What do you suggest? Should i change my stepping and relearn it or should i keep doing what i am already good at and just train as the way i am?
hey coach good content things is that now i am a 13 Turing 14 year old boy the problem is my body is not used to the elbow high position can u help me?
