In a past video I tested if extractors that are built into hobs work ( • We test the effectiven... ) and a frequent comment was "What happens when you spill things into them?"
In this video I spill a whole pan full of bolognaise sauce into one of our showroom displays so we can all see what happens and how they come apart for cleaning.
The hob on display is the Miele 2 in 1 hob with integral countertop extractor KMDA 7634 FL We've also used models from Neff (they call them Venting Hobs) and Bora (they call them cooktop extractors) and they both have very similar approaches for cleaning.
Roots is a small, family run, independent specialist that designs, supplies and installs Kitchens, Bedrooms and Bathrooms in East Kent. We have a showroom between Canterbury and Faversham and you're welcome to visit and see this hob on display.

so... i guess it's not too troublesome.... unless you spill enough low viscosity liquid to reach the fan 2:56 but before then, should probably check if the plate with 4 clips is watertight; probably drip from the lower end towards centre of cupboard if it isn't.. by simulation... first thing to do would probably be to........ (1) turn if off (2) remove drawers/open cupboards (3) place a tub under the 4-clip-clasped plate (4) remove top filter (5) dip dry towel, absorb as much liquid as possible > squeeze into bucket/sink? (6) dump enough flour to increase viscosity of trapped spilled liquid under the filter in catch tray? (7) remove clip/clasp plate = drips to tub (or flour paste chunks) (8) lift catch tray/filter cage = liquid semi-trapped by the housing walls + base of catch tray/filter cage will flow out the sides and down into tub as you pull the filter cage upwards....? (probably? less overflow if the flour absorbed it... probably...) (9) filter tray/cage > dishwasher (10) begin dry wiping > wet wiping > cleaning solution wiping > wet wiping > dry wiping .....you'd probably have to knock over a pot of pasta water / broth / consommé soup for it to get to that point.

Dear Steve,thanks for the videos, it seems from the video that you cannot have an oven beneath the hob, it would also be good to know if you can have a cupboard above it. The info you show is useful but would be really good in future to get a full beginners' guide for those of us considering this as a solution but for us to understand the pros and cons of each overhead and down draft units. Thanks
@RootsKent
@RootsKent 4 месяца назад
Hi, >it seems...you cannot have an oven beneath the hob Correct. Normally, you would not have an oven beneath a venting hob. The extractor motor takes around 20cm of height. There's an exception to this where in my business (because we have a lot of control over how things are made) and selecting particular ovens, you could. However that would be not very ergonomic and just because we could doesn't mean we should. >good to know if you can have a cupboard above it. Yes, you can. Over induction hobs most manufacturers say cabinets can be as close as 45cm if I remember correctly (it's model specific so you should check), however that impedes your view of the pans so if we must have cupboards over we'd look for 70cm clear of the hob surface. This dispay in our showorom: www.roots.uk/display-wood-effect-kitchen has 68cm space. > ...full beginners' guide for those of us considering this as a solution but for us to understand the pros and cons of each overhead and down draft units If you're local, we talk through these details as we design your kitchen 😁 If you read through the other comments here that talk about the pros and cons of these venting hobs vs wall mount extractors. I'd love to make more videos (they're fun!) so I'll add this to the ideas list. Hope that helps. Steve

Thanks a lot for this video, was wondering how messy those get when stuff gets spilled into it. Currently building a house and deciding between a hob with built in extractor and a recessed ceiling extractor. I think we'll go for a ceiling one... While I thought the mess would be much worse, this is still quite a mess to clean up.
@RootsKent
@RootsKent 3 года назад
House Build > Great position to be in! I'm just a little envious already. So, for recessed ceiling extractors, remember to consider/allow for a little flexibility in final joist position if you plan for the motor to fit between the joists. Also, remember to think about how you'll reach the extractor to remove the filters for the dishwasher (and carbon filters if you're recirculating). If you need a step ladder, plan a home for it - lest you reach to change the filter and step through the glass hob surface 😱
@agentfifteen
@agentfifteen 2 года назад
Honestly, cleaning it up seems easier and less of a mess than if you didn't have the extractor and had to wipe all that bolognese off the stove top.
@robinweaver382
@robinweaver382 3 года назад
Great videos... well done. The bolognese sauce 'dump' very graphic but the extractor wasn't running at the same time. Surely if this was running at full bore the liquid would have been pulled through into the carbon filters and possibly worse?
@RootsKent
@RootsKent 3 года назад
Hi Robin, that wouldn't be a problem as the fan and motor is at the top of a U bend shape and the pull of air wouldn't be enough to carry liquid against gravity. You can see the motor from underneath the hob at 2:56 and anything that gets past the metal grease filter and the liquid catch tray would land on the removable bottom tray. On this model, the carbon filters are after the motor (actually accessible at plinth level - see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2OoqQHAcpSQ.html). I could have run the extractor (I did before the video as I heated the sauce to make it runny) but my sound recording skills aren't quite up to doing that well (see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2OoqQHAcpSQ.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SBfysIfETlg.html )

@RootsKent
@RootsKent 2 года назад
I'm sorry I can't name a model that's perfect for everyone. Our recommendation changes depending on our customers needs. We like Miele, Neff & Bora models but remember we're a small business and don't get to see and play with every manufacturers products. The choice is often a factor of price, installation (how and where ducting connects, space taken inside of cabinet) and aesthetic (see the 'black and brass' video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EXzvBNbloK8.html - this Bora model is all black whereas the Miele in this video has stainless steel).

Great, thanks. Would love a video about how it's vented and how much room is taken underneath; room for a drawer cabinet?
@RootsKent
@RootsKent 3 года назад
All the models of this style I've seen close up (Miele, Neff, Bora, Blaupunkt) and other brands I've quickly looked at all vent to the back of the cabinet* then regular ducting continues down to the floor with bends as needed. This often affects how the cabinets are constructed (allowing enough space behind back panels, having removable back panels). Drawers work but are often shorter to allow for the ducting (eg: 45cm deep instead of 50cm). Normally these take up around 20cm of the top of the cupboard, so rough dimensions a typical 3 drawer unit of 72cm high (common size in UK) has a full 28cm bottom drawer, a usable half of the next 28cm drawer and no use of the 14cm drawer. *oh, and some of the models allow venting to left and right too, instead of out the back.

Hi Steve very interesting video as just thinking about such an appliance. Do they need to have there own electric supply back to the fuse board please ??
@RootsKent
@RootsKent 2 года назад
Yes, most induction hobs (and all the venting hobs I can think of) need a dedicated 32A supply. That's known as a "radial" and goes directly to the appliance from the fuse board (consumer unit / where the trip switches are) as opposed to a "Ring Main" which can serve multiple appliances that use much less power (and have a plug fitted with a fuse of no more than 13A). There are a couple of built in induction hobs that can work on a 13A plug but as they can access less power they cannot heat things as fast. Several hobs also run on 20A. Generally, the higher power hobs are nicer to use but the lower power models cost less (to install as well as to buy)

Hi Steve, will there be a video about Bora in the further? I cook a lot Chinese food, is this type of hob extractor strong enough for removing the big smoke? Plus, if I want to install one, do I need to build a pipe underneath to let the smoke go out? Thanks a lot!
@RootsKent
@RootsKent 3 года назад
> will there be a video about Bora No plans for a Bora video, I don't have one on display :-) > strong enough for removing the big smoke? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2OoqQHAcpSQ.html to help decide if this style of extractor works, (My view: I think they are as effective as wall/overhead extractors + video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SBfysIfETlg.html talks about how to compare noise & extraction rates between models) > do I need to build a pipe underneath to let the smoke go out? You don't *need* too but it's good if you can. You can recirculate the air through carbon filters which remove the smell (I show them in ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2OoqQHAcpSQ.html). Ducting is better for most people and most of the time but getting suitably sized ducting into islands can be difficult. Ducting is not so good when you're aiming to achieve very low environmental impact in a building (as you're moving all your warm heated house air outside)

@RootsKent
@RootsKent 11 месяцев назад
Hi, there were two drawers below that hob. The good thing about drawers is they are easy to remove if ever you have a big spill or need access for another reason. Most of these style of hob are about 20cm high so that always loses the top drawer space but the remaining 50-60cm of your cabinet can still be drawers. Eg if you have 2 fronts, the lowest is a deep drawer and the top drawer gives a thin drawer for cutlery/cooking things. From the front it would look still like a normal 2 drawer cabinet. I'm happy you liked the video 😁 Thanks Steve

Hi Steve, are the contents of these built in extractor fans housed in the unit below or is there further connections required to go outside
@RootsKent
@RootsKent Год назад
The fan motor is below the hob (seen at 2:56), overall height for fitting is around 200mm so you can still use the rest of the cupboard/drawers below that. At the back of the motor is a duct connection that can either recirculate back into the room or be connected to outside. You can see the white ducting at 2:56 coming out of the motor and turning down through 90 degrees. I should probably also say that different models and manufacturers vary a little from this configuration so check carefully the detail of the model you're looking at and how it should be ducted. Although some extractors have outside motors I haven't seen any of this style of downdraught/vented hob that don't have the motor as part of the hob, but I'm sure someone can reply with the exception if it exists!

Hi Steve, thank you for the video! I’m really considering the Miele 2 in 1 but hesitant about the plug and play option. In your experience have your customers had any problems with condensation/grease down the back of the cabinets if they don’t use directed ducting to the kick board? Thank you!
@RootsKent
@RootsKent 11 месяцев назад
So, all manufacturers we deal with (Neff/Miele/Bora) now offer this so on that basis we're doing it for clients. At first I was nervous and we have a new working display that I will test some more (when I get time to make another video... Please like and subscribe 😁 it does help my small business) but my instinct is it will be fine.

Oh, and I'm on hols so can't check, but I'm assuming that still includes the recirculation /charcoal effect filter in the model you're talking about. Also, only in island design, never against an external wall (else condensation issues)

I cannot find an answer to this anywhere! - if you put one on an island, how do you vent it to the outside? Under the ground?
@RootsKent
@RootsKent 2 года назад
Hi Perla, two options: a) Duct outside through floor, Pro: Takes smells outside, no carbon filters to replace - Con: Takes warm air from inside to outside (increasing your heating bill), not all floors can have ducting fitted after (in extensionru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2OoqQHAcpSQ.html talks about what extractors do and pros/cons of duct vs recirculation and shows a carbon filter (if I remember correctly, a while since I watched it!). Both options work, I'm just on the edge of preferring ducting through floor if both options are possible but recirculation is absolutely fine in my experience. Hope that helps! Hi, I have but I haven't had any close up time with Novy. For between Bora X Pure and Miele I'm happy with (and we sell) both. Picking between them is often a combination of aesthetic, dimensions (how it works within the furniture, especially with ducting connections or clearances required according to the model instructions), and of course price.

There are new instructions now where manufacturers are saying you don't need ducting but to do this you should have a complete/solid back panel to the cabinet, and a route for air to escape from behind the cabinets (at plinth level or elsewhere) I'd like to do some experiments with those but I need more free time to make videos :-)
