Feeling for Becky on the children's clothes. I bought a friend a 12 month toddler shirt for a baby shower. I heard that you should avoid newborn clothes since they may grow quickly. A little over a year later I got the cutest pictures and a nice text once her child could fit in it. Totally made my day that she remembered that I gave it to her.

Yes I make sure to do that with gifted clothes for my kids. Even if they only wore it for a few seconds before taking it off.. lol. I'll get a picture to send to the giver.

Agree. My best friend sent me a picture of his son in the cute little bear onsee, and I really appreciated it, so when his wife had their daughter I gave him a swan onesee for her to grow into... no picture. The 3rd did not get an outfit, I gave him baby stuff for her to use. He really appreciated it. Two and three tire you out more than one 😸

I agree with Ariel. Its stressful and outdated. Today with social media everyone post all the pictures of everything they got and says thank you online anyway. Just don't give a gift if you feel obligated a Thank you. Because that literally takes the point of "gift" away.

My boyfriend's dad returned my Christmas gift to him back to me. Not like, returned at the store - Returned back to me. It was an electronic wine bottle opener that I had put some thought into. Honestly that was so traumatizing and I truly wish he would've just thrown it away or regifted it to someone else. Be gracious gifters by not expecting anything back, but also be gracious receivers by showing genuine gratitude.

Couldn't agree more! Once I was invited along to my friend's family vacation (as a foreigner, they didn't want me spending holiday time just alone, which was really thoughtful), and we were to stay at the parent's friend's place. Of course my friend and I wanted to bring something to say thank you... we were dirt-poor students, but we bundled together and got a 20 euro bottle of wine (the normal wine was more like 3-5 euro). Well, we arrived at a total palace... like absolutely multi-million dollar home. We gave the couple the wine, and he sneered at it. "Thank you," he said, "we might be able to use it for cooking." My friend and I were mortified. We decided to get dessert from the bakery (because any private bakery is essentially the same good quality for roughly the same price), and spent another 20 euro that we didn't have... that time, the snobs were very pleased, and perhaps slightly ashamed of themselves (well, I can dream). But, certainly, we won the respect of my friend's whole family (they told us so afterward), that we, the "babies", knew how to behave with grace. For your bf's dad, that sucks so much. If you get him anything again, perhaps ask him directly what he'd like - say that you felt so awful that he didn't like the wine bottle opener, and since the point of gift-giving is to make him feel happy, you need his input. Or, you can decide that someone who isn't a gracious receiver doesn't really deserve a gift... and make a donation to a good cause in his name, or get your bf an extra prezzie!

I'm surprised Becky isn't more into regifting with her sustainability streak. It's a great way to reuse items and not have random things hanging around. I wish it was more acceptable but it still pretty taboo and hard to do. Also, fuck the obligation and expectation of thank you cards. Actual thank yous and gratitude are a whole other thing.

I've found that the best gifts to give are EXPERIENCES. a certificate for a 60-minute massage, spa day, tickets to a show or an amusement park, etc. For my 5th year anniversary with my boyfriend, I thought about getting him a tech gadget or something, but instead I got us both tickets to the zoo. It's a gift and a date all in one! I feel like I've given so many gifts over the years that were "things" like books or home items and they've ended up just sitting around their house and not really being used. But gift someone with an actual, tangible EVENT and it gets a much more enthusiastic response! It also gives the recipient something to look forward to.

When I was 17, I became pregnant with my first born. My great Aunt Dolly (a nun in South Dakota) literally sent me $1,000 thanking me for keeping my baby, which was never a thing of question. So I sent her a thank you/grateful letter in return. She then sent me another $1,000 thanking me for thanking her. My mother and Grandma called around to make sure Aunt Dolly wasn't losing her mind. It was intentional. So... I think thank you notes are pretty nice...

My thoughts on gifts: It's not a gift if there are any expectations attached, it becomes a contract I didn't consent to signing, including saying thank you. Its a very neurotypical and abelist part of our societies traditions to show a very specific type of gratitude when you get something, and its honestly not a very natural reaction for a lot of people. Now I LOVE to show how much I love a gift, and as a kid I had to learn how to be thankful "the right way", instead of being allowed time for my brain to process what I'm even holding, how it could apply to my life, all I want is 10 seconds to form real excitement instead of having to fake it. I also hate obligated gift holidays, i agree that gifts are better when spontaneous.

RE: eco-friendly gifting I like gifting things that are consumable or an "experience" - besides the classic wine and chocolate, a homemade pie, a spotify or netflix subscription, movie tickets, a giftcard to a small business. Giving somebody something that they'll have to hold onto is usually a burden to the other person and contributes to landfill!

Before I had a kid, I think I would’ve agreed with Becky about sending baby clothes and the parent taking a picture in it and sending it to the gift giver. Now that I have a kid though, I agree more with Rachel. My son outgrew some clothes even before I could take off tags on some gifts and wash them before putting them on my son. And someone else here mentioned getting so many clothes you forget who gave you what. I would be so overwhelmed with remembering to document my son wearing a gifted outfit on top of all the daily things I do for him in a day. Now that he’s over 1 I think it might be easier to remember but under 1 year I would give a friend a message after the gift. The photo would be a lot of pressure. I really appreciate the discussion and perspectives though! It’s easy to be caught in my own little world as a parent, I would still want my child-free friends to feel appreciated, especially with gifts. If a friend asked me to send them a pic of my son dressed in their outfit, I would set that outfit out for that reason. I also think thank you notes shouldn’t be obligated anymore, especially with so many means to communicate. I always feel bad about throwing away cards, but they pile up if I don’t.

Thank you notes are great when they are genuine. If someone's gift truly touched me, I love sending a handwritten note. I love giving gifts, and I love it when people like the gifts that I give them. When I give a thank you note, it sparks joy in me to know that the gifter will know how much I loved it. But agree on no compulsory thank you notes. If it's not genuine, it is meaningless. And by no means are thank you notes obligatory! A gift should be freely given, out of love. The person getting the gift should be grateful- after all, they were given something out of love!- but they can express that gratitude however they wish. For Ariel, maybe that is through a text. For Becky, it might be a note. There are choices! :)

I'm so on board with Ariel's thank yous. A gift is different than a day to day type thank you. Thank you cards are formal. I love her gratitude vs. Card take. Like 1000000% to get anxiety out of thank you cards because it feels like they expected me to expect a card and that's not why. There is a huge difference in formality with the scenarios being vetted and I agree with Ariel on 100% 😂🤣 I LOVE this discussion so so much. I love ALL the takes but I feel VINDICATED af. My mom expects thanks yous even if I've said thank you in person. I am 100% for thanks and gratitude in person and in general but that's different than a formal card. Its nuanced because I do think for some people a card, lile if I see them once at my wedding and then not again for years yea maybe a card for them since seeing them is slim but people I see and am close to will hear it all the time yea? I am 100% down with digital texts or emails and stuff. It's less formal and less pressure on the person getting it. But I think about how I feel when I get them and I feel guilty af they felt the need to do that. Which is why they make me uncomfortable. Anyway! Lol I started the podcast thinking I'd have nothing in common with Ariel but as it turns out she and I should be besties 😂🤣 which means, of course, I love y'all!! Ya all are AMAZING!!

I have been always taught with the phrase "it's better to give than receive." The gift is only the bonus in gift giving. The action of it means more because you took time and thought in spending on the person. I agree with Ariel, re-gifting is fine, not all presents may suit the person & re-gift it outside of the friend/family group. One time, my aunt re-gfted back a Mickey and Minnie Mouse figurines that was given to her by my mum to her 10 years ago. My mum was so upset. I also agree with Rachel in abolishing the annual and holiday-based gift giving. It brings so much emotional and finanical pressure in finding people's gifts & depending how many they need to gift to, it's a lot of money to spend on things that are often materialistic and not as meaningful. I think gifts should be given on occasions like birthdays, weddings, etc.

The whole thing with kids clothes as gifts will always make me chuckle- I once got a friend's (then 4 month old) some cute little slippers from Scotland knowing they were too big and would grow into them- Didn't get a photo of them wearing the shoes until she was about a year and a half old BUT a few years later when they had another baby HE also started wearing them once he could walk. Now usually if I'm buying a gift for kiddos its going to be something like a Stuffed Animal, adjustable hat or like an Arts and Crafts kit.

I'm with Ariel about gift giving with no strings attached so no thank you note needed. Also, regift if you want, the thing is yours now to do as you please. And money is forever the best gift. So versatile. We celebrate a thing called Teacher's Day here and kids always want to give us gifts and some of them are useful, but others become knick-knacks. So our school thankfully has encouraged them to just make cards or write notes for us instead. Better still if it's an e-card. Lol.

Ariel PERFECTLY describes the dilemma I always run into lol. The part about giving a gift being a gift in itself resonates so much; but as she described it, it's the worst thing on earth when someone is apprehensive about getting the gift. The end result is making them feel stressed/pressured (the opposite of the goal, of course) and then I feel guilty afterwards that I put us into that spot. For that reason, when I notice it I adamantly try to reassure them about the gifting being a gift thing. Being really explicit that I do not expect (or even want) a gift in return seems to be really helpful in that regard; and honestly I would really be comforted by someone saying that when I get gifts as well. I definitely want to keep gift giving as a thing, but I soooo agree with and look forward to a day where the pressure is no longer a thing lol.

She went to doll shows (super creepy), online sales, etc. and couldn't sell them for anything less than $15-$20 and even then, were only able to sell a handful. They took up storage at my aunt's house until this year when they picked some out to give her daughter and donated the rest. She would have made more money if they were resold right away when getting them.

Gotta agree with Ariel. I think what she was trying to say was that a thank you note feels so formal and quite mundane when instead of spending the time writing the note, finding and buying a stamp and then mailing it you can easily just give the person a call or shoot them a text and be like "hey I love the gift or whatever thanks a lot!"

My mom has gone through the same struggle of childhood items still living in our childhood bedrooms. She won't get rid of anything that we don't give permission to give away but she sends a picture of an item and ask if we want to claim it. If we don't claim it, then she donates it. And she forced us to decide on things when their floors were being refinished one year since our rooms had to be emptied! If we don't want it, she is not obligated to keep it. Her philosophy is Döstädning (swedish for death cleaning). If she dies, it isn't a burden on those you leave behind.

Gift giving is my love language. I do it all year if I happen to see something that reminds me of a person, I will get it for them. I also love gifting holidays because I get to express my love for those most important to me with gifts!

Team Ariel! Gifts without strings attached! If someone gifts me expectations and pressure, I'd rather go without.

Yesss the "no obligation gifts" hot take is one I've held for a while now and it makes so many people angry. Like, the expectation of ANY return on a charitable act literally contradicts what makes charity what it is. If you expect anything back, it ceases to be a gift, and becomes a transaction, ritualistic or not.

My response to this episode: YAAAAAAAASSSSSSS!!!!! My husband and I just had the talk about how much we hate gift giving unless it's something you KNOW they will LOVE! I just need to learn to save it for a "holiday". Love u girls and Maggie whom we missed!

OMG The present poem!! My mom implemented this many many years ago and I use it now with my friends! It really is the best and it has really clear expectations. My husband is the WORST at giving gifts, and this way he is able to figure out what to get me.

I agree to give gifts without strings attached, for the joy of giving. And I think thank you notes should not be a thing. But I am TOTALLY in Becky's corner. I think it's respectful to wear a sweater your grandma gave you around her or if someone gives me clothes or something for my baby, I at least send them a photo of her wearing it, even if we take it off immediately after. I just think that's the right thing to do.

I did all my wrapping this year without any tape. Just re-used paper and ribbon (which I inherited from my grandmother who had a HUGE collection before she passed)

Thank you notes: I bought and started writing thank you notes for my wedding and then at my wedding they were lost. A month later we found them in my maid of honors car and I literally just couldn't care anymore. Gift wrapping: I love using brown "butcher" paper and paper tape to wrap now and make a yarn bow or draw something on it (all compostable and recyclable🙌) or I thrift wrapping paper and use the wrapping paper scraps to make bows! So fun!

My favourite ecological gift wrapping thing is that I put my moms christmas present in a gift bag because i know she reuses those next year for other peoples gifts. Often gifts also just dont need any wrapping. You can make a card with it if you feel its not nice enough without wrapping

@Becky... love the no gifts attitude. My hubby and I agreed (since we started) no only do gifts for birthdays. For Christmas we have always just together decided what we wanted to do for a vacation that year. We prefer experiences over stuff that just accumulates. No regrets

Doesn’t help us moms who forget who got what and when for what situation. But I understand your feelings on the matter of baby clothes as gifts.

My thought is if you can thank the gifter in person, no thank you note is necessary. A thank you message (text, email, postal mail) is appreciated but not expected in every case.

totally agree with the idea of giving gifts when we come across unique things that are perfect for specific ppl rather than gifting annually out of obligation!! nothing brings me more joy than finding something (esp when thrifting) that someone I know will love. ps. though they are kinda nice to get, Idrc about things like thank you notes... but considering the insane number of photos ppl take of their kids nowadays, sending a pic of the kid in the outfit seems like a pretty reasonable response

I helped my friends SIL plan a baby shower for one of my BFFs and we made a whole speech on behalf of all the guests there how excited we all were for her, etc etc and loudly and emphatically stated that on behalf of everyone there we wanted to give her the gift of not writing us thank you notes, and to just focus on taking care of herself for the rest of the pregnancy. It was awesome and done in such a way that almost all the other guests joined in with “that’s such a great idea” so the few fussy relatives who weren’t on board had to sit quietly and not make a fuss.

Yesssss Ariel! Let me know what my gifts are! My mom and I used to go out on Black Friday and she would get me the clothes that fit that I like. Then I get to wear them after Christmas!
