I have conflicting emotions after watching this video. On the one hand, I feel inspired to watch someone with such fantastic talent. On the other hand, I feel like throwing my lathe away because I could never achieve this skill level. Thanks for the video. You have amazing skill and craftsmanship. You make it look so easy.
Therapeutic to watch. You make it look so easy, yet the symmetry of the finished product and consistency among the lot is impossibly perfect. I am binge watching all of your videos now. Thank you for your contribution the wood turning community.
Amazing work - I love turning - love the chips flying and seeing a project come to life. Was just asked to turn two matching spindles from my cousin - that is what brought me to your video. Thanks for sharing! Bob
What a great video. Because of you I have been mainly focused on spindle work and spindle projects. I think its overlooked by so many turners. However with your skills and videos I think so many more people will begin to appreciate other things besides bowls and vessels. Keep up the great work and please keep posting. #1 channel and turner on You Tube.
A friend asked me to do a copy of a spindle for him last week, it was my first attempt at copy turning freehand and I can assure you it took me a lot longer than 8 minutes, however I was pretty pleased with the result. watching your video I have picked up more techniques and will use them if needed in future, Thanks once again for an excellent tutorial/video. Tommy
Awesome talent and skill! I enjoyed it as usual... I hope you're making lots of money, because you deserve it. Really enjoyed seeing your face and hearing you describe your actions. Being quick and to the point also makes it enjoyable. Keep up the good work. Thank you to RU-vid!
Brilliant to watch a quality production turner at work. Inspirational for us amateurs. Thanks. I have 20 identical spindles to make and your story board with sharp pins will save a load of time. Cheers.
Thank you very much for hands on showing me the steps I gone look threw wood crafts videos and how to make tables none show me it’s done step by step make bro because you helped me on dream
Great video the skew work is amazing. I noticed that your tools a super sharp would really like to see how you sharpen them. Fantastic job. Your the best turner on you tube hands down!
Thanks for sharing your video's. I've learned so much watching how you use the skew. I think I just figured out what I'm doing wrong trying to make beads. Wish it would of been closer view but you can't have everything. Thanks again.
Steve,It's great to hear the man behind the skew - don't be shy, you're a natural!Obviously you need the extractor on but it does interfere with you speaking. I don't know much about the technical aspects of videoing or what equipment you are using, but I know that other RU-vide's I watch have moved to lapel mikes because it givess clearer sound.I usually just watch again but speaking for myself, I would be quite happy to watch you do one with full commentary and another couple with none or just any extra points that occur to you. I realise that that could get in the way of your work though.Keep em coming!
Thanks Peter, I am sure I could manage a voice over but that would take more time than I seem to have but will try on some future videos if possible, I will continue to show a mixture of types. Thank you for your comments they are appreciated.
Great video. Nice to have the commentary. Even after watching I still don't know how you did it so fast. It takes longer to make and drink the first tea of the day
Very, very good work. You must sleep with you skew....! I like the skew also, and I have learned very much from your videos. Thank you, very much......!
Very interesting, I could watch you work for hours. I take it you set up the height of your lathe 6” higher to compensate for the chips on the floor lol, great vid as always. Pete
Simply amazing to watch. I think if you gave me 1000 of them to turn I think you would be hard pressed to find two the same. Out of interest I know you run your lathe at about 1K for most things. Do you find any differences at sanding at that speed? Those with reversible lathes will often sand at slow speed and reverse the lathe every grit. Great job, love watching.
Thanks Paul, these are approx. 1250 rpm and no problem sanding personally don't find much advantage reducing the speed, I have reverse on my lathe but very rarely use it. Even when I am sanding to very fine grits I find little difference.
That is definitely impressive! I love your skew work for sure. Can you maybe do a video on tool sharpening? I had no idea buying a lathe would mean becoming a professional tool sharpener- any pointers in that direction would be awesome.
Thank you. I grind freehand so I don’t think my sharpening video helps much. If not confident then I suggest getting a sharpening jig. There are several available but one of the best and value for money is the wolverine. You will need a grinder preferably 8”. facebook.com/TheWoodturners/videos/163641739164608/
After years of driving a semi truck cross country i found that i could quite easily operate the truck in any situation with basically very little thought at all. It had completely become second nature. As i watch you very quickly & expertly maneuver the skew i can only imagine that you probably make these cuts quite automatically? Do you merely tell yourself that you wish to do this or that cut & your body responds without thought? As a complete novice turner, i find making the skew do any maneuver not unlike the first attempts at backing up a 53 ft trailer lol. Painstaking....😮
Who’s Bob? I’m Steve My favourite skew is Ashley Iles 1” flat skew I freehand sharpen and have never measured the angles I just grind to what looks right, however it’s approx 30 degrees included angle and 15 degrees skew
Efficiency is intelligent laziness.... You sure have that part down... Interesting to me is that your skew tends to be ground more straight across than most of what I am used to seeing. Looks like maybe 10 degrees or so. It seems like a lot of people have theirs at 30 to 45 degrees. Any particular reason?
Thank you, basically because I find it far more efficient and easier to remove larger amounts of wood no more than that. The angle is how my Grandad and the family have done it for hundreds of years but generally I don’t think the angle of skew is that important use what’s comfortable. Tool presentation will change that angle to whatever you want.
Hi Steve cannot believe the speed you produce such beautiful work out I suppose 25 years doing the job helps. You sound like a fellow brummie would I be right ?
Hi thank you, you’re right born in Birmingham and lived all my life on the outskirts of Birmingham all my life. 38 years doing the job and my family woodturners for 300 years. In Birmingham for over 150 of those.
@@woodturner21 yeah. For long time i wish to see the face of the man who has that amazing gift. I have an lathe but your work and your skills, make me to practice and make amazing stuff. Thank you so much
I don’t actually do tutorials but just video work I’m doing and my methods to show how I work as a production turner . I feel if I talk people will then take it as a tutorial and my methods may not be the correct ones for some people also I don’t feel comfortable talking and turning at the same time so it would mean a lot of time to edit a video to add a voice over. This is time I can not afford at the moment. Sorry
