See how to cut side grain and end grain effectively in spindle work, and how the same cuts that work for each grain orientation in spindle work are essentially the same cuts that we used in facework.
Cover tool: Crown 1/2" shallow gouge with a traditional grind
Woods: Callery Pear and Black Walnut
Prerequisites:
"Facework: Cutting End Grain"
"Facework: Cutting Side Grain"

Thank you Brian! The time, effort and attention to detail that you've put into this series is evident in every minute of every video. I am brand new to turning, having just started my first project (green turning of a natural edged alder bowl), I can tell you that these videos are the cornerstone to the success I'm enjoying and also serve as troubleshooting guides after each catch. Thanks again, Gord

Thank you so much for explaining everything so well Brian. I wish I'd found your videos a few weeks ago when I started. I just did a vase (my 3rd item) and now I see all the things I've done wrong. I've watched the first 4 as well as this video and plan on watching the rest. They are so good.

First class! This should help me to face off a spindle without getting run back or a poor surface finish! I'm facing off a lot at the mo because I'm practising texturing end grain. What I'm finding is that I need much more practice when facing off with a spindle gouge!! It's as well to texture a good rather than a rubbish surface even though you're going to make some major intrusion into that surface. Thanks Brian.

Very good videos on the basic cuts. Your visual demonstrations along with theexplanations are clear and should be easy to apply. I'm anxious to go out and try to replicate your techniques.

In particular I like the ideas of using one's thumb to avoid run back and creating a ledge so one can gain bevel contact.

Good one Brian! I just learning and so far, my biggest issue is, believe it or not, getting a smooth flat surface on side grain for plates/platters. But, this video gave me some good information and techniques to try. Thanks a bunch. Best regards, Charlie

Where do you find the steel and handle collar to make your tools? Please keep up the teaching. It is very useful to us beginners. You are a blessing and thank you so much for all your hard work to share you knowledge.
