A quick evening session down Stanpit Marsh, Christchurch Harbour, June 2021. Revisiting our previous mullet video from a few years ago, with a little more detail and information on how, why and when.

Excellent.. it reminds me of when I used to fish the Harbour 40+ years ago, using a punt from Chub Keynes(RIP) The Harbour always offered some of the best fishing, from Small Lipped Mullet on suitabley modified Mepps or the 'Mullet' spoons with ribbed silver blades and red beads sold at Davies Tackle, to thick Lipped on bread among the boats and of course the Sea Trout at Clay Pool. 100's of hours spent in total angling enjoyment. I hope its still as good today?

We're very very lucky to have the harbour on our doorsteps, as you say it's a wonderful fishery.

Excellent video I enjoyed watching, I am perhaps more likely to win the Olympic 100 metres Gold medal than catch a Mullet! Your venue is very much like the Solway estuary where I live….so maybe there is hope! I suspect you make it look easier than it perhaps is! Great video

Try fishing down from clay pool , with a Mepps no 2 spinner with treble tipped with 1inch off ragworm , red maggots work if you cannot get rag . Low water always was best as fish were pushed into the channel! Had a few sea trout and bass up to 8lb !! When using just the spinner only ever caught checker bass ! And be aware off bailiffs! If you get a sea trout they leave shiny scales all over you ! Bailiffs shine torch on you to see if you have caught one ! So no point lying ..

What a great set-up for mullet i was trying to catch a few on the fly rod but kept lifting too early but hopefully next time I will get a few thanks for sharing big like from me bud tight line's and catch you on the next video 🤝

Lovely vid. I watched the one you did a few years ago too. When I posted my vid at that location I got told to take it down as it's apparently a secret mark! So...I made another one lol. I don't get why mullet fishing isn't more popular. Such good fun.

It's so secret they sell day tickets and yearly memberships! 🤣🤣 No I don't know why it's not more popular either, it's so simple and more often than not you get rewarded! Glad you liked my video anyway.

This one is a simple Leeda Flip net. I have since upgraded to a Fox Rage one that has a rubberised mesh. This saves constant tangles with the hook and net.

Really enjoyed that!! Been holidaying in Mudeford for years and always had a couple of days on the Avon, but think i may give the harbour a go now for Bass and Mullet. Can i ask what time/tide do you think is best for catching?

My favourite time, especially on hot summer's days is in the evening as the light starts to fade. Tides are less crucial, I've caught them on most states, but if I had to pick I'd go with an ebbing tide.

Do you a need a Christchurch harbour permit to fish for mullet and bass at Stanpit marshes. Likewise for bass fishing at Mudeford quay tide race ?

Do the Mullet hang around in the Christchurch harbour all year round?

There's the odd one caught, by coarse anglers usually, here and there in the winter, but it's just the odd rogue one. They definitely increase in numbers as the weather warms.

Excellent, great session thank you for sharing 👍I had a walk round there at the weekend but it was pretty busy. I bought some mepps from the shop at the weekend & followed your video on how to make the mullet spinners, they turned out well. Couple of questions: how much would the rod & reel set up cost? Is it only ragworm that can used as some of my trips are impromptu which means I don't have ragworm, also what is the best way to keep the worms lasting longer when I've got some? & what about Isome worms, are they any good or would thin slithers of mackerel work?

Glad you enjoyed the video. It does get quite busy at the weekends unfortunately. You can get a nice rod and reel set up for about £60 that would be perfect for this, we have more expensive kit too of course. Isome worms are probably the best alternative, but you can't beat live rag really. Rag are very temperature sensitive, so in the summer months try and just buy what you need for each session. They don't do well in the hot sun sadly. Equally most domestic fridges are too cold and will kill them too!

I've only ever had thins, but I know of a couple of anglers who say they've had thicks on them from other parts of the country. I was with Liam when he had a thick from Christchurch, but that's one fish out of hundreds over the years, so more of an exception rather than rule.

I’m getting so confused with mullet fishing so are they going for the spinner or the rag I’ve been told to present suttle as possible I’ve caught on bread but never spinning or fly it’s driving me crazy

So the spinning is almost entirely aimed at the thin lipped mullet, in fact I've only ever caught thins on this method. They are odd creatures as they will follow a spinner time after time, but won't take it unless it's baited. So I wonder if the spinner gets their curiosity then the worm takes their fancy once they're there? You don't have to worry too much about subtly with this method, in fact the lighter you go on the hook length the more issues you'll have with line twist and tangles.

@@christchurchanglingcentre5428 I’ve fish spinners with a soft plastic lure on one treble for perch chub and Zander before I moved to Cornwall a became obsessed with bass and now mullet so frustrating bit I’ll figure it out all part of the fun but looks a wonderful mark have you tried on fly in the same mark ?

You can get a day ticket, a season ticket or members of RDAA can fish here too. This technique works very well in most estuaries though, anywhere you find thin lips.

Just found your videos which I am really enjoying. I am interested in trying out that method when I can get to Christchurch. Could you tell me what the clip is you attach the Mepps to and whether you have a swivel on the line anywhere. Thanks.

Hi Colin. Glad you like the videos. The clip I use is one of these in a size 1: christchurchanglingcentre.co.uk/components/clips/match-rig-clips-10-pack/ I do not use a swivel for any of my lure fishing. They are very much unnecessary.

Do you know of any other spots apart from stanpit and Christchurch where you'll find thin lip and this method would work? Chain ferry? Rockley? Thanks

Sorry for late reply! Rockley is a good spot, but you can catch them on this method anywhere you find mullet. I do a fair bit further up the river around Tuckton, Meridians and Iford. Poole quay is worth a look too.

We have nothing to do with the royalty, you need to speak to Davis Tackle in Christchurch for information on that water.

@@christchurchanglingcentre5428 but you have to pay the Royalty Permit charge of £17.50 a day don't you? In order to fish at Stanpit legally. Stanpit is in the Royalty waters.

Sure is mate. Using a spinner to catch fish is the epitome of spinning. Maybe you're getting confused with lure fishing? Some lure anglers get very precious when people use bait. There's no need, it's all just fishing at the end of the day.
