If only one lesson was enough to learn how to spin actually usable skeins. I've been spinning for almost a year now and I'm still terrible at it. Hopefully, it didn't take you as long as it has me. I wish these were much longer and showed more of each process, like a normal documentary. Still, they're pretty cool.

A lot of this old type stuff it really just seems some people have a natural talent for it and some don't, I'm still not very good at Flint napping despite working on it for a long time but the spinning just kind of came more naturally

Nah the trick is to keep going at it and trying slightly different ways. Look at it from different angles.

Maybe it's like knitting or crochet, and just has more elements to it like tension that we don't typically think about?

I'm impressed. This video makes it look like you learned to spin wool, hemp and cotton in one lesson. I'd be interested to see what your thread looks like. Took me several tries to get a workable skein of yarn.

+Jessica Cejnar Yeah, it actually took a while for me to get the hang of it and was really frustrating at first. My first few batches were quite thick, but after a while I was able to finally get the hang of it and make them quite thin. You can see some of them in the following video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RqF-UcWchos.html

What did spinning hemp feel like? I really like spinning different types of wool/fleeces because they're (typically) really soft, but just by looking at the product you were working with that hemp looked kind of like you were spinning grass. Is it like spinning linen/flax? Really curious. I like your other "how to make everything" videos too!

This was awesome! I make a lot of cordage from plant and animal fibers so I understand basically how it works but this gave me a much better understanding. Definitely want to get some spinning projects going this winter.

I've known about spinning thread for years, but that animation at the beginning makes it so much easier to understand.

thats soo nice to see, I learned how to spin sheep wool in 2015 from a very wise English lady in France. And it's fun to see that everybody starts that way. There is 2 things you need to remember. 1st: it takes 4 hours to learn how to spin, the rest is practice. and 2nd Wool is very forgiving :D

Darn, I still don't get it how a piece of wool/cotton/silk/whatever, that can be easily split into smaller fragments, is "merged" with other similar pieces and becomes a looooong seemingly whole thread that requires efforts to tear.

He doesn't mention that fibers aren't smooth. They're made up of scales (keratin) or spines? ( Cellulose) that can be smoothed down or teased up through friction, dehydration, moisture, etc and that can be made to lock together. It's like human hair can separate or matt and tangle, depending on how you handle it, though it's not nearly as good at it as wool is.
